Toshiba Smart TV and Phonak TV Connector

Thanks for your interest ! I was given the right cable by Boots Hearing (SPDIF audio/optical) but couldn’t get it to work ! I’d been sent a large Toshiba manual by that firm and finally found a footnote telling me to ensure that the TV and the device were both off when I connected them. I’d been trying it when the TV was on standby ! Device now worked. However … Toshiba TVs don’t allow device audio and normal TV sound simultaneously. My wife wants to watch programmes with me ! Do you know of any modern TVs that allow both functions at once ?

My Panasonic works with both Connector and Speakers. If you can reject that TV I can recommend Richer Sounds as they have long, no frills, guarantees. As long as you specify what the TV has to do then they should provide one that meets your needs.

“Toshiba TVs don’t allow device audio and normal TV sound simultaneously.”

I found this Connecting and using optical output on the TV. (dynabook.com) which seems to be what you were saying, have you explored different menu settings?

You can get a splitter for that optical and then use the other optical output to go to a soundbar or other device with a separate volume control.

There is usually a setting that allows for TV speakers to be shut off, or stay on, specially when using the optical cable. Nevernseen a TV that can’t do that. Pretty sure in this case, it’s the humans that aren’t smart, not the TV

My TV doesn’t allow it either and I’m also from the UK.

Hello Zebras ! What did you do about it, or was there nothing to be done ?

@maggieandjimpepin

I live on my own so not really an issue.

I just investigated as my nephew comes round. I haven’t found a way around it so I don’t use my TV Connector when he’s here.

Does this video help at all? It goes kinda fast but there are sound options in there that might be of interest. I’m incredulous that the tv would not output both.
Nevermind. Page 20 says no other output.
The model appears to be 32WK3C64DB or 24/32 WK3C Series for the manual. I think some letters and numbers were mixed-up earlier.

Model is actually 32WK306308. Toshiba techie said none of their models give both audio direct connection AND normal TV sound at the same time. I’ve been trying to find a brand and model that does, or some device that I can attach to the TV to do the job.

Try Samsung, my set does but it’s 5 years old now so no point giving you the model number.

Electronic expert at a specialist store says a splitter and soundbar work but can give serious problems with lipsynch. Thinks he can get me a Panasonic that would work.

There is no delay in any optical. Lipsynch can be an issue with many bluetooth systems. I don’t see how a splitter will cause any issues with delay in the audio. But your call…

Result ! The breed I need is dying out but Richer Sounds located an older Panasonic (no doubt your model !) which has audio out buttons which will accept a 3.5 cable with twin coloured jack plugs for the TV end. Just like my defunct Panasonic ! NB only one left now in the London store. It’s a Tx40jx850b. They confirmed there don’t seem to be any newer TVs of any brand that can do this. He also said splitters enabling a TV connector and a sound bar or external speakers distort lipsynch.

As a last restort use the 3.5 headphone jack into the streamer from the TV. It says in the Toshiba manual that the headphone jack offers both output and TV speakers?

If the above picture is correct you need a toslink cable. Forget the rca cables and headphones out. Then you need to get into the setting and look for PCM.

That is a comprehensive user guide! Nice to see the proper spelling of English words. We try to use many of them here in little ol’ Canada.
Page 107 seems to say that the speakers turn off when external sound is selected. I suggest taking the TV Connector with you and test it out.

As for the model number of the Toshiba, I couldn’t find the one you gave. So I found one with maybe some letters and numbers switched in what you gave.

If the manual is correct you do have optical out. This shouldn’t give any problems with sync or muting speakers.
It also says that with certain headphones it doesn’t mute the speakers.
I don’t think the Panasonic will work as well with analog audio out.
Can you check for the optical socket and try it.

I do indeed have an optical out socket, which I finally managed to get working with my TV connector box. BUT … the TV sound menu gives the option of connector OR normal TV speakers, not both. Fine If I lived alone but my wife’s not deaf and we like to watch stuff together. The Panasonic I’m getting does both but I’m told it’s a dying breed because manufacturers are focussing on audio in rather than audio out and nearly all give the choice between them in the sound menu. If we are both still alive when the new Panasonic dies, maybe my wife will need hearing aids by then and we’ll both use the connector option on the new TV ! NB the new Panasonic has Dolby sound.

Sorry about that. I,m dreading this Samsung going faulty as I’m in the same boat as you.
If only they would keep the good stuff intact - this set has a connector box with every known in and out on it, so clever and easy to use as its a metre away from the set.
Good luck with the next set!

I have a new LG smart TV, I just wanted a small one, 27 inch, as I created a, compact & bijou office, at one end of the kitchen, I have 2 other smart TV’s, 49 inch Panasonic (living room) 49 inch LG (pool room) these 2 work with a sound bar & optical splitter to my Phonak TV Connectors, I have 2, one lives permanently in the pool room, the other rotates between the 27 inch LG & the Panasonic, which I have 2 sets of cables for, so all I have to change is the actual TV Connector…… New LG 27 inch, has several sound options, 5 to be exact, one of which is “Internal TV Speaker + Optical Out”, or you can have just “Optical Out”…. Hope this helps. Cheers Kev
