Phonak Lumity Naida 90 UP BTE Review

This is a thread for the Phonak Naida’s, so I will add my recent trial experience for the Naida L90 BTE UP. A couple of months ago I trialed the Oticon Xceed without a successful conclusion. My current trial with the Phonaks is going much better after a couple of weeks and I will likely keep them. My first observation comparing the two is that the Phonak app actually works and has allowed me to adjust settings and improve the HA performance. I am now doing well with my default program on the Phonaks with noticeably increased word recognition. Noisy environments also seem better, although my testing here is limited. Streaming music (which I use frequently) is very good. I will soon get a tv connector and am guessing it will also work well.
The only area of difficulty I am having is hearing my passenger (wife) while driving at freeway speeds. My car is reasonably quiet, but I can’t find a combination of app adjustments that work yet. I will be working with my Audiologist to see if we can improve here. Ultimately, I may buy a Roger device for the car and restaurants.
I’m not sure that the amount I am paying for the new Phonaks is proportional to the increase in my hearing ability, but I have resolved that if I can afford it, I will pay to make improvements. My fear at present is that the HA manufacturers are not producing many new technology ultra-power options for profound hearing loss. Oh well, at my age, I won’t need many more upgrades .

@TomHalf Thank you very much for your feedback.

My brother too, has the same issue, he struggles to hear/understand while driving.

He did use roger on/clip-on mic with limited success, maybe he hasn’t done it properly.
@kevels55 has had a good success with roger devices in car/restaurant.

Looking forward for your feedback :+1:t3:

Hi @DaveL

Just some comments from your history, that may help, or explain, what may have happened, and what I “may” have learnt, on my journey. Of course, I now have access to the target software. Your story doesn’t bore me at all

I’ve never had REM, except the simulated version in Target. This did not help me at all.

This is standard, or at least turn Bluetooth off on the phone. At home, when using Target, I have to switch off Bluetooth on nearby devices, and switch off the TV Connector, I also make sure my backup aids and Roger devices are turned off too, or the aids will struggle to connect.

If the custom programs were made in the app, they’re automatically deleted with a fitting change. I doubt he was being vindictive, to be fair. The quick fit is generally awful for my (similar) hearing loss.

Dave, I see your issues with Phonak Paradise, “may” be helped by Lumity, but I think a couple of changes in Target could solve most problems with your P90s.

  1. You wish to hear better speech
  2. You need to hear all sounds from all around you, for safety at work

To Phonak, these 2 things are conflicts, as “2” stops “1” from working. “1” uses beamforming, which takes away what it believes is background noise. This could be traffic about to run you over - “2”. I have all my settings at 360⁰ now, as beamforming takes away important stuff, including nature sounds. The world has become a noisier place but I’m trying to re-learn how to pick out the sounds I want to hear. I understand Oticon has the 360⁰ approach, but haven’t tried them.

Good luck
Peter

I’m getting close ro Naida territory

I’m rarely a passenger in a car but I’ve tried many presets for hearing others talk in the car, and like you, none have really helped (speech in noise, comfort in echo, speech in car, speech in loud noise). I do wonder if a Phonak PartnerMic would be a solution for this environment? Although it still costs a lot, it’s way cheaper than getting Roger mics and licenses installed. It wouldn’t help in restaurants (unless you pass it round :grinning: ), but I rarely carry my RogerOn either. I thoroughly recommend the TV Connector.

The PartnerMic does help in that situation as with restaurants, especially if you can mute the aids. These units can be found second-hand and do not require any audiologist changing any settings other than enabling the “mute” function if it is not enabled.

Thank you for your input @TomHalf … We love to hear some elements of success on here, it gives us all hope… As @Baltazard said, a remote Roger Mic, is possibly your best option for communication in a vehicle, I am most fortunate, I have several, but I shop around eBay, and hunt the bargains down, killing the hearing aid Mics whilst using Roger, will enhance the clarity, you switch these off in the app  btw @PeterH, I am just about set up, for xbox series x flight simulator, I gutted one of our bedrooms, stripped everything out, new floor, new computer desk, sofa bed, to give me more room (looks good) all my computers are in there, got the joystick and thruster, also got the steering column, gearshift, and pedals, for driving games… Samsung 32inch, curved monitor, 240htz, 1ms response time, picture clarity is unreal… plugged in a TV connector 2 for sound, wired in a Fire Cube, I now have access to every TV channel known to man, with a certain app… Cheers Kev

That’s brilliant. There’s loads on YouTube to help you set up the stick etc. Currently flying round the world, and just landed at Hanoi. I’m learning so much about places while doing this. Can’t always use Live weather (especially in the UK) as “clouds sometimes have rocks!” All this, and time shifting is possible to be changed though.

I might just look for a cheap PartnerMic, although I doubt my wife would like it on all the time, or I’d hear her cursing me under her breath :grinning:

I was told about 4 years ago I might need new hearing aids that were more powerful.

That’s why I’m following this Phonak Lumity Naida 90 thread

I had a bad experience last Friday. I went to a parents college open day with my daughter and had horrendous trouble understanding people in noise - on several occasions. It was embarrassing as I usually put faith in my devices (unitron Moxi v-rt - lumity equivalent) to hear on a one to one situation. I know that it is difficult to hear in groups, but usually I can hear when I am facing people one to one. Not this time - there was noise reduction, but the noise reduction also reduced the speakers to the extent that I could not hear anything.

As I’m within my Specsavers trial, I am taking back the Specsavers Advance (Unitron Moxi v-rt) and will be upgrading to the Phonak Lumity Naida 90 UP BTE. What I am hoping for is that the speech in loud noise program kicks in, as it certainly did not appear to with the Unitron Moxi. I don’t know if this is because it did - and was useless, or was just not automatic. Either way, I felt like a man on a boat drifting at sea without a sail. A very bad experience.

The Nadia’s have been ordered and I will post my review once I get them.

Thank you Peter  I was out for lunch today with my wife Elspeth, she was using one of my “Roger Selects” in presenter/lanyard mode, struggling slightly to keep the hearing aids Mics switched off, the Mics switch back on, when I exit the app, most annoying, so perhaps, I will have to delve into “Target” to rectify, if I can? That being said, I didn’t miss any of the conversation in the car or indeed the very busy restaurant, it’s bright and airy, hardwood floor, at least a 20 foot high ceiling, with the reverberation of approximately 100 folk talking away in the background, 1 to 1, in lanyard mode, the select handles this with ease, in a totally hostile hearing aid environment, it is indeed an excellent piece of kit… On another note Peter, I reached the Ross-Shire 8 Ball Pool League Singles Final, my 7th Ross-Shire League Singles Final, my first was 40 odd years ago, in the early eighties, I stopped playing that League, for around 30 years, from 2012 I started to play that league again, I have been in the final, 6 times since, winning only 2 of them, but at 67yo, any final is sweet, I still play in the Inverness Premier League, perhaps a little bit of renaissance in my dotage? We didn’t play the final, one of the earlier participants got pissed, after he went out, and fell down the venue stairs, multiple skull fractures, and brain bleed, 4 paramedics around him, he is a good friend, so we canceled the final to be played at a later date… Thankfully, he is now on the mend… Cheers Kev :upside_down_face:

Yeah @DaveL … I would be inclined to go for a Naida SP or UP with your loss, on your next iteration via “Workers Comp”… IMO, nothing sounds better than a BTE, and yes, RIC’s are good, but a BTE sounds way better… Cheers Kev

Hi @glucas, I don’t think you will be disappointed with the “Naida Lumity UP 90 BTE’s”, they are indeed excellent hearing aids… Having said that, as you are acutely aware, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and @michael1 didn’t do well with the Naida Lumity 90’s, but I am almost certain, it was his A.uD that was lacking, as opposed to to the actual hearing aids… Good Luck with your trial… Cheers Kev

Yes. Agreed, I could just upgrade to the Audeo Lumity proper. As I am suspicious that the Unitron Moxi is working in the same way. Actually, I believe it must be working in the same way, but then it would not do any harm to get the Audeo Lumity to see if there is a difference.

However, I have another problem. The bass on the RIC UP is not ideal. I have discovered with my NHS Dynamo hearing aids, bass and music sounds a lot lot better. So that’s one reason for wanting to switch to the Nadia. Not because it’s a super power aid, but because it’s a BTE. If there was just a BTE Lumity I would switch to that, as I am not in the profound category. Just severe to profound.

I am hoping as well that the Nadia anyway has some additional features that help people in the severe to profound loss category.

I like chunky  @Baltazard … Naida BTE, will sound way better for @glucas & @DaveL, also plenty of headroom… Cheers Kev

The V just stands for the Vivante range. It’s the latest premium offering from Unitron, equivalent to the Lumity. The RT or R then denotes Rechargeable/Telecoil or just Rechargeable. (Or maybe RIC!) one or the other.

Wow, it sounds like he’s lucky to have survived. You did the right thing. You’re clearly a far better player than me. I’m just not consistent enough. I can beat anyone, but also get beat by anyone. Some of our league travel south to Great Yarmouth every year… I think a few only go for the beer mind. I’m frankly surprised I’ve never been

I can get new hearing aids in 3+ years (every 5 years with workman’s comp)

But they don’t provide top grade hearing aids. I think Paradise P70’s is the best. I’m very lucky the dispensing Audi got me P90’s. Don’t know how.

See if they’ll stretch to custom slimtips, I’m sure you’d benefit.

The Audi who dispensed my second set of Phonaks on workman’s comp said I needed them. I was a client for 8 years there.
His HA I couldn’t understand speech in noise. Couldn’t hear behind. Work wasn’t safe.
I left when business was sold

The new Audi convinced workman’s comp I needed new hearing aids. He worked a miracle getting them
