Oticon Opn S 1 hearing aids restarting when used with iPhone 12 Pro

My step son will be here tomorrow and he has the iPhone 12 , I will ask him if I can try his phone with my OPNS1 aids. I have a new WiFi system, and all types of WiFi devices enabled all at home once, him here, there will be at least 18 WiFi devices enabled and connected all at the same time. Now I have to say that my router s setup to force 5gigs when ever possible, but I do have a few 2.4gig that moly devices.

Will be interesting to see what happensā€¦ Thanks

Ok I went to audiologist today and sheā€™s sending the aids to Oticon for a check. I got loaners ( Opn1. She had OPNS1 but they wouldnā€™t charge.

Bad news is same issue with aids randomly rebooting while connected to TV box so I guess itā€™s the TV box. My aids are still under warranty so shouldnā€™t cost anything for the check but guess I have to look for new TV box.

Still weird about aids rebooting and I donā€™t understand why TV box is causing the issue but.

Just a quick updateā€¦ I went to Audiologist todayā€¦ Oticon sent a new pair of OPN S1s for meā€¦ I asked if they told her what was wrong with my other onesā€¦ She said they didnā€™t say anything to herā€¦ just sent a new pairā€¦ So, Iā€™ll see what happens with TV box streamingā€¦ she did order a new TV box, but we decided Iā€™d just use the TV box I have to see if they problem of the aids restarting continuesā€¦ I did take my TV box and she checked software and confirmed that my TV box has most current firmware (2.1.1 according to her & Oticonā€¦)

UPDATEā€¦ well the new S1s are kind of doing the same thing when connected to TV box They arenā€™t ā€œrestartingā€ but one or the other of them will disconnect from TV box, and then reconnect to the boxā€¦ the other thing is that TV box volume is back to being LOUD ā€¦ not sure why that is, as audiologist said she programmed the new aids based on what I had in her softwareā€¦ any ideas on this? I may have to ask audiologist to borrow the new TV box she got (probably should have asked to borrow it todayā€¦) and see if the issue persists with a different TV boxā€¦

The only thing I can think of is that the volume setting for it in Genie 2 is set to more than the default. See the TV Adapter/EduMic Loudness setting in the screenshot below. Maybe instead of being set at the ā€œdown arrowā€ level, itā€™s set to the right or rightmost level.

Did you simply pair your new OPN S1s with your old TV Adapter 3.0 on top of the old OPN S1s? Meaning that your TV Adapter is now paired with both the old and the new set? Before trying out your audiā€™s new TV Adapter box, it may be worth trying to perform a system reset on your current TV Adapter box to clear out the pairing of the old set to see if that helps with the disconnect/reconnect flakiness youā€™re seeing or not.

Thanksā€¦ Re TV box volume: before, when I would connect to the TV box, via the app, the volume would show up in the app as ā€œ14ā€ ā€¦ it was still too loud and Iā€™d just adjust it ā€¦ now, itā€™s defaulting to ā€œ16ā€ and again, I just have to turn it downā€¦ the audiologist has adjusted it several times in the past but for some reason, it never really ā€œsticksā€ ā€¦ I think sheā€™s put it all the way it second to lowest settingā€¦ Since I got the new S1s today - would the setting she had for TV adapter been transferred over to the new ones? Iā€™m assuming so?

She paired the new aids to the TV box since I brought it with me ā€¦ Iā€™ll try the reset of the TV box and see if that makes a differenceā€¦

Iā€™m just guessing that if you paired the OPN S1 first to the hearing box, maybe thatā€™s when the TV Adapter ā€œtakesā€ the setting for the TV Adapter box from the hearing aids as was set by Genie 2, which at that time was on the louder volume setting. Then you discovered that it was too loud, asked your audi to change it to a lower volume setting, which the audi did, but then you didnā€™t re-pair the hearing aids (now with the new change) to the TV Adapter again, so the new Genie 2 setting made to the hearing aids didnā€™t make it to the TV Adapter, and maybe thatā€™s why it didnā€™t stick.

This is just a guess, but if thatā€™s what you observed, it may help to perform a system reset on the TV Adapter box then re-pair the hearing aids to it, just to clear any old settings out first to allow the new pairing to take in the new setting. At least if that still didnā€™t help, at least then you know the hypothesis above isnā€™t true.

At any rate, it doesnā€™t hurt to perform a system reset on the TV Adapter box and the only cost of doing that is the extra time itā€™d take you to have to pair your hearing aids to it again. But at least you know that you start out fresh with nothing old still lingering in the box.

The TV Adapter box allows an unlimited number of hearing aids to be paired with it, but if its firmware is not robust enough, things may get mucked up. If youā€™re the only one using it, it wouldnā€™t hurt to perform a system reset before doing a pairing of your new hearing aids to it.

Thanksā€¦ I just did system reset on TV adapter (pressing red button on the back - I assume thatā€™s what you meant?) ā€¦ re-paired the aids - still started out at 16 (in the app) ā€¦ I guess Iā€™ll email the audiologist - telling her about the disconnect/reconnect to TV in the app issue, as well as the volumeā€¦ (right aid just did the disconnect/reconnect to TV program as Iā€™m typing this) ā€¦ Iā€™ll probably ask to borrow the new TV box she got to see if that solves the problem ā€¦ Iā€™m thinking that perhaps something in the TV box is going ā€œbadā€ (with Bluetooth I guess?) ā€¦ assume thatā€™s possible, unless these TV boxes are built to last ā€œforeverā€

My TV adapter always starts out at 16 and I normally lower it to 15 and also set the environment down to -1. Not sure if this relates to your issue but if I have the connect clip powered on and connect to the TV adapter my ON app drops connection to the aids. This is with the new More1 aids, a new TV adapter and new connect clip. And at the time I first paired my More1 aids to the iPhone I rebooted the iPhone first.

Thanksā€¦ I donā€™t have Connect Clip ā€¦ I did reboot the phone, deleted the app, re-added the app, re-paired the aids, rebooted the TV adapter box, etc, etcā€¦ And the aids take FOREVER to fully connect to the appā€¦ usually at least 10 minutes or so, before the aids actually fully connect ā€¦ right now, itā€™s showing ā€œleft disconnectedā€ā€¦ been that way for about 5 minutes nowā€¦

I think I read somewhere/sometime that TV box volume can still show 16 even though Genie software will be set at lower setting (5 settings I thinkā€¦) . As I said, with previous aids (and the loaners I had for the past week), TV volume in app would show 14 - now, with new S1s, itā€™s back to showing 16 and definitely LOUDER than it was beforeā€¦ Not sure if audiologist can check the settings without me being there, but Iā€™ll contact her Monday with this issue, as well as the aids disconnecting/connecting to TV box - as I said, at least they arenā€™t rebooting like the previous aids(and the loaners) , but I still want to try the new TV box to see if that solves the issueā€¦

Do that you have the aids paired to an iPad? It sounds like that issue to me. I am also wondering if it has to do with either the WiFi or cellular signals of the iPhone. Because you said this started with getting the new iPhone if I remember correctly. You could try going to the iPhone control panel and disabling the cellular and see if changes the issues. And maybe even the WiFi too. If not either of these, maybe it is the TV Adapter but personally I donā€™t think it is.

Thanksā€¦ No iPad - no other Apple devices (except for Apple watchā€¦) only thing that worked previously was when I turned off Bluetooth on the phoneā€¦ that seems ridiculous if I have to do that ā€¦ and, again, it didnā€™t happen with previous iPhone (X) and I believe the X and 12 Pro (my current one) have the exact same Bluetooth hardware ? I have tried turning off WiFi on phone and that didnā€™t helpā€¦ havenā€™t tried turning off cellular but that would be silly if I have to do that ā€¦ am I the only one that has trouble with the app connecting? Seems like every time I open up the app, the aids will have to go through the ā€œconnectingā€ dance - again, usually 5-10 minutes ā€¦

If the ON app is taking too long or never connects, the best way Iā€™ve found to reconnect is to: kill all applications running on the phone, power the phone off, restart it (it boots fairly quickly with a 12), restart the hearing aids, the aids connect quickly (as confirmed by the MFi functions working from the newly powered up phone), and then start the ON app and it almost always connects quickly. I know that is a long procedure but it works for me. I also typically do a clean boot of my phone every day after I take it off charge - again that should NOT be necessary but it helps to make things work as one expects. It appears to me that both iOS (14.6) and the ON app have issues but Iā€™m not an iOS programmer (but I do have programming experience on UNIX and Windows writing instrument control programs using multiple communication protocols).

As for interfering signals, Iā€™m not sure that is the problem because the above routine fixes issues where I have a WiFi 802.11ax router (about a meter from the TV Adapter 3) and neighbors have WiFi routers all of which are running both 2.5 and 5 GHz transmitters simultaneously (I can see them using an app on my Mac) and my iPhone 12 is connected to cellular (5G signal) after the above procedure and ON works.

It is frustrating that things donā€™t work as they should. It appears to me that Oticon and Apple are pointing fingers and neither will fix issues. I expect neither do adequate testing before releasing new hardware (and firmware) and software versions.

Thanksā€¦with your procedure, do the aids stay connected to the app? Whenever I open the app, the aids take 5-10 minutes to fully reconnect (usually itā€™s one or the other aid that shows ā€œdisconnectedā€ and takes awhile to reconnectā€¦ Iā€™ll give it a tryā€¦

Also, just realized that I donā€™t think the ā€œstart-up tonesā€ are turned on, so when I said the aids are disconnecting/reconnecting to TV box, I think they are actually restarting (like the old ones didā€¦)

Just did your routineā€¦ no real improvementā€¦ I also turned off WiFi (thereby connecting to 5G) ā€¦ Iā€™ll see what happensā€¦

NO real difference/improvementā€¦

SO, since the new OPN S1s were doing the same thing (restarting when using TV adapter) , I went in today and audiologist gave me the new TV box to try out and see if it still happensā€¦ so far, itā€™s happened twice ā€¦ Iā€™ll see what hapnpensā€¦ IF it continues, at least I will know itā€™s not the TV box and I wonā€™t have to buy the new TV boxā€¦ I also told her the TV volume was back to 16 (in the app) and way too loudā€¦ She checked in software and it was showing at level 2 (out of 5) for TV adapter - which is what it was before and the app volume would start at 14 (still too loud and I would turn it down) ā€¦ so she cleared out the setting and set it for 2 again ā€¦ but still starts out at 16 in the app so Iā€™ll just turn it downā€¦ Regarding the restarting with TV box ā€“ I still think itā€™s the new iPhone 12 Pro (only new piece of hardwareā€¦) but since I donā€™t have my previous phone (X) , I canā€™t check it out, but my daugheter has an XR , SO, if the issues persists, I will test using her phoneā€¦ and if the issue is resolved, I will at least have some data to go to Apple and try to argue that my phone (12 Pro) has something wrong and hopefully get them to swap it outā€¦
