Oticon Opn S 1 hearing aids restarting when used with iPhone 12 Pro

It has been so far. But my fitting was boosted in March to give me more output. And that day was back last year. And I mute the mics when streaming.

Update: I went to audiologist the other day… there were 3 phones showing connected to TV box in her software… she deleted all three and I came home and re-paired iPhone 12 Pro to the TV box… sadly, the issue of one or the other hearing aid restarting randomly still continues… most of the time it is when I am connected to TV box but also when I am not connected to it. This morning the left aid restarted after I only had the aids off the charger for a couple of minutes… and app is still very slow to reconnect to aids … one example: when I’m connected to the TV box, if I mute the sound (in the app), when I unmute - the aids will then disconnect from the app and it usually takes at least 5 minutes to reconnect … it’s very annoying and frustrating… I’m going out of town for about a week so it will be interesting to see if they restart at all since I won’t have TV box with me… and when I get back, I already told the audiologist I might want her to send the aids to Oticon to be checked out…

Update: Still having the issue with aids restarting (usually while connected to TV box, but sometimes when they are not) … although, while on vacation last week - I had NO problems - no restarting, etc … now, back home and it’s starting again -… and after the aid restarts, it takes several minutes to get reconnected to the app… I have done all the shutting down, re-pairing, removing the app, adding the app, shutting down iphone, etc … I talked with Apple and they pointed to Oticon… guess I’ll ask audiologist to send the aids away for a check, and see if maybe she has More1 I can try out… It’s got to be something with iphone 12 Pro since that’s the ONLY new piece of hardware I have, but Apple was no help… I have 14.6 iOS …

My apologies if already asked and answered, but are the Oticon aids MFi certified?

Yes Oticon aids have always been MFI aids, but the new Oticon More aids will also work with a small number of Android 10 phones.

I just checked - the Apple MFi hearing aid list includes the More, Opn S, Opn, and others:

Made for iPhone compatible hearing devices

Seems to me the newer versions of the Oticon ON app have a few more features but are less reliable and slower to connect with newer and faster iPhones. I have an iPhone 12 mini with iOS 14.6 (recent update). An old iPhone 6 with an older version of the ON app seemed to work better for me than the new combo but the old phone battery was shot and the most recent iOS for the 6 wouldn’t run the newer versions of ON and some other apps so I “upgraded”

Thanks… I could probably live without the app – it’s the aids shutting down/restarting that are driving me nuts … but it didn’t happen last week when I was away from home (and TV box…) … guess I’ll probably try not using the TV box for a couple of days, although I won’t be able to hear the TV :frowning:

What happens if you just turn Bluetooth off on your phone? Do you still get those problems? Or are you needing to make adjustments via the phone during the day? (No streaming phone calls but a quick error check)

One thing obviously different when you were on vacation is that you didn’t use the wifi router at home. I think you said you switched to 5 GHz and it seems to have helped. But it didn’t solve the random reboot issue altogether? If not, there’s a possibility that your router is generating some kind of interference (maybe with or without the TV Adapter) that causes the OPN S1 to reboot.

The issue you have with connecting to the ON app on your new iPhone is a different issue (connection issue) so if you had the new iPhone with you on vacation and it didn’t reboot then it just established that it’s a different issue and not inter-related.

The other factor is the TV Adapter 3.0 which you didn’t have with you on vacation. You did say that you had experienced reboot when or when not using the TV Adapter before. But one difference is that when you’re at home at didn’t use the TV Adapter and still had reboots, maybe the TV Adapter was connected to power and maybe even turned on, even if you didn’t put your OPN S1 in the TV Program mode. So one thing to try is to make sure the TV Adapter is removed from power when you’re not using it.

Thanks… the only problems are: 1) I didn’t have any of these issues when I had previous iPhone X - I’ve had the same TV box same Wifi router, same TV ,etc… 2) problem only started with new iPhone 12 Pro … seems to me it’s something with the combination of the new Iphone 12 Pro and TV box , and the app…

One new difference on the iPhone 12 is that it is 5G capable. I wonder if this causes some kind of interference or not. If it’s possible to disable the 5G capability on your iPhone 12 to just use 4G or LTE like before, then that would be worth a try.

I did try using the non-5g and it didn’t really help… not sure how to “disable” it?

My step son will be here tomorrow and he has the iPhone 12 , I will ask him if I can try his phone with my OPNS1 aids. I have a new WiFi system, and all types of WiFi devices enabled all at home once, him here, there will be at least 18 WiFi devices enabled and connected all at the same time. Now I have to say that my router s setup to force 5gigs when ever possible, but I do have a few 2.4gig that moly devices.

Will be interesting to see what happens… Thanks

Ok I went to audiologist today and she’s sending the aids to Oticon for a check. I got loaners ( Opn1. She had OPNS1 but they wouldn’t charge.

Bad news is same issue with aids randomly rebooting while connected to TV box so I guess it’s the TV box. My aids are still under warranty so shouldn’t cost anything for the check but guess I have to look for new TV box.

Still weird about aids rebooting and I don’t understand why TV box is causing the issue but.

Just a quick update… I went to Audiologist today… Oticon sent a new pair of OPN S1s for me… I asked if they told her what was wrong with my other ones… She said they didn’t say anything to her… just sent a new pair… So, I’ll see what happens with TV box streaming… she did order a new TV box, but we decided I’d just use the TV box I have to see if they problem of the aids restarting continues… I did take my TV box and she checked software and confirmed that my TV box has most current firmware (2.1.1 according to her & Oticon…)

UPDATE… well the new S1s are kind of doing the same thing when connected to TV box They aren’t “restarting” but one or the other of them will disconnect from TV box, and then reconnect to the box… the other thing is that TV box volume is back to being LOUD … not sure why that is, as audiologist said she programmed the new aids based on what I had in her software… any ideas on this? I may have to ask audiologist to borrow the new TV box she got (probably should have asked to borrow it today…) and see if the issue persists with a different TV box…

The only thing I can think of is that the volume setting for it in Genie 2 is set to more than the default. See the TV Adapter/EduMic Loudness setting in the screenshot below. Maybe instead of being set at the “down arrow” level, it’s set to the right or rightmost level.

Did you simply pair your new OPN S1s with your old TV Adapter 3.0 on top of the old OPN S1s? Meaning that your TV Adapter is now paired with both the old and the new set? Before trying out your audi’s new TV Adapter box, it may be worth trying to perform a system reset on your current TV Adapter box to clear out the pairing of the old set to see if that helps with the disconnect/reconnect flakiness you’re seeing or not.

Thanks… Re TV box volume: before, when I would connect to the TV box, via the app, the volume would show up in the app as “14” … it was still too loud and I’d just adjust it … now, it’s defaulting to “16” and again, I just have to turn it down… the audiologist has adjusted it several times in the past but for some reason, it never really “sticks” … I think she’s put it all the way it second to lowest setting… Since I got the new S1s today - would the setting she had for TV adapter been transferred over to the new ones? I’m assuming so?

She paired the new aids to the TV box since I brought it with me … I’ll try the reset of the TV box and see if that makes a difference…

I’m just guessing that if you paired the OPN S1 first to the hearing box, maybe that’s when the TV Adapter “takes” the setting for the TV Adapter box from the hearing aids as was set by Genie 2, which at that time was on the louder volume setting. Then you discovered that it was too loud, asked your audi to change it to a lower volume setting, which the audi did, but then you didn’t re-pair the hearing aids (now with the new change) to the TV Adapter again, so the new Genie 2 setting made to the hearing aids didn’t make it to the TV Adapter, and maybe that’s why it didn’t stick.

This is just a guess, but if that’s what you observed, it may help to perform a system reset on the TV Adapter box then re-pair the hearing aids to it, just to clear any old settings out first to allow the new pairing to take in the new setting. At least if that still didn’t help, at least then you know the hypothesis above isn’t true.

At any rate, it doesn’t hurt to perform a system reset on the TV Adapter box and the only cost of doing that is the extra time it’d take you to have to pair your hearing aids to it again. But at least you know that you start out fresh with nothing old still lingering in the box.

The TV Adapter box allows an unlimited number of hearing aids to be paired with it, but if its firmware is not robust enough, things may get mucked up. If you’re the only one using it, it wouldn’t hurt to perform a system reset before doing a pairing of your new hearing aids to it.
