If so, tell the HIS exactly what you’ve written - you get feedback when you’re near a wall.
If not, work with the HIS to learn how to insert the aids. For a long time I fought the audi (sic) on how deep I should get the aids. The problem was my molds needed to be remade.
Also, I’ve had big molds that are separate from the receivers. Now I’m using molds that fit around the receiver, so the mold and receiver are one piece. They’re much smaller, and I hear much better with these molds. You might talk with your HIS about that type of mold.
So as mentioned you need a tight fit (snug) with your ear molds, so at the moment they are leaking sounds out and causing feedback, another thing to get checked is wax build up as this is another common reason for feedback.
What type of mold do you use? I found the only one the seals well enough for my profound loss in a skeleton type. I tried 2 others prior and they had bad feedback. Also, how bad is your loss? It would be helpful to post your audiogram.
a Thanks for the replies. The Rick rechargeable aids seem to have a nice fitting custom mold. I don’t think it’s earwax because I always make sure my ears and molds are clean. Besides that, the feedback started like an hour after getting the new Jabra aids. I read it might be a vent issue on the molds? Too big or to small of an air hole? Does anyone know about the vent issue? I am thinking it is more likely a programing issue. If that’s the case, any suggestions on that?
Then you maybe have bad fitting molds. My loss is severe and profound using UP receivers and have no feedback, and my aids are damn near maxed out. I dont understand how you have such noticeable feedback with you lower gains.
I can cup my ears with my hand and still have zero feedback.
Now that i think about it, do you know what size vent you have in your molds? I actually plug the mold vent on my bad ear (the right one) because i do get some feedback. I have 1 mm vents. My hearing is so bad in my right ear that i dont mind the slightly plugged up feeling of no vent since that ear feels kinda “dead” anyway. You might try plugging your vents with a broken off tooth pick or something to test if its a vent issue. Also make sure the settings in the SmartFit software match the type of mold and vent size you are using. Your audi would need to verify that.
I’ll aske about the mold fit, but they seem to fit pretty good.
I do not know the vent size of the molds. Maybe it needs to be smaller like your 1mm. Since I’m blind the toothpick in the vent might be a bit of a challenge. I’ll run all your suggestions by the Audi. So you also say if I went without vents, it just means a slightly plugged up feeling?,
How would it effect sound quality in talking with others and streaming music?
Thanks.
Streaming is very much improved. My low freqs are still somewhat hearable without aids so having molds does reduce some of the lower frequencies, especially with non-streamed music but the increase in speech comprehension offsets that.
What material is your molds made from? I had leakage with acrylic ones and going to semi-soft silicone really seems to help in that regard, at least for my ear canals.
Mr Smithster
I have used hard plastic acrylic skeletal earmolds for 40 years.
Only when I switched to Resound or Jabra have I run into problems with feedback.
What brand are you using?
I like the overall Natural sound of Resound and Jabra.
Resound One 9. Same aid as the original Jabra Pro.
Maybe consider other mold material options if what you’re using isnt working. They come with a money back guarantee.
Resound/Jabra aids seem to be pretty good with feedback. Does your audi run a feedback calibration after any and every adjustments?
This is what Resound soft skeleton molds look like…
Thanks for the advice. I’ll drop off this info for my Audi, Let me know if I covered all the bases?
Dear Audi.
My new Jabra Enhance Pro 20 Hearing aids Handled the Background Noise well in the store and Car. The Jabra Phone App and streaming is good. Now here is the problem. There is Feedback (squeal) when hand is near ear or walking near a wall. It also distorts when I talk loud. This happens in both aids, but it seems to happen a little more in the rite aid.
We need to solve this feedback issue
Let’s double check if the earmold fit and bent size are correct?
Let’s make sure the vent size and type of earmold are in harmony with the Smart Fit software?
Let’s redo the Smart Fit feedback calibration test.
I still need help in disconnecting one of my multi mics from the old Resound aids so that we can connect it to the new Jabra aids.
You’re doing a fine job and I appreciate all your hard work.
It may be beneficial to find the Jabra helpdesk number and call in advance so that our upcoming appointment goes well. Let me know If there is a cancelation so as to get me in sooner. Thank you, Ziby
On my second appointment to fix a feedback problem on my Jabra EP 20 rite hearing aid, Costco did a software adjustment This lessened the loudness AND Frequency of the feedback, but it is still happening SOMETIMES near kitchen cupboards and when walking through doorways. This even happened when I tried a little experiment by lowering the volume twice on the aids! This problem does not seem to be happening in the left aid. When I asked about the size of the vent, they did not know the answer, but they could check that out on the next visit. Another thing I noticed is that when I talk in a deep loud voice, there is like a distortion. This is what I plan on talking about on my next Costco appointment.
1, We may need to reduce the vent size on the earmolds? Knowing and getting the vent size on custom earmolds is very important! 2, We may need to remake the earmolds for a better fit? 3, We may need to double check if the Smart Fit software is in harmony with the type of earmold we are using? 4, It was also recommended we use the Smart Fit feedback calibration test after each adjustment. 5, We may need to lower the compression sensitivity a little bit? If Costco cannot understand this, should I get custom Jabra hard plastic acrylic skeletal earmolds remade by someone else like a another Costco in the area or a Resound audiologist?
What are your suggestions?
Do you insert your left HA the same way every time? One of my aids can slip a bit, and the signal it has slipped is feedback, especially when I cup my hand over my ear or when I’m too close to a reflective surface (kitchen cabinet, car window, etc.). The feedback goes way when I insert the aid the way it was when it was fitted.
I’m very disappointed with my Jabra hearing aids. They do not pair with my Samsung S10e phone. The audiologist is able to do it after many tries but I have no luck and have spent 6 hours so far this morning trying. I could live without the app, but blue tooth has been around for 20+ years.
I highly recommend making sure your phone pairs the 1st time and every time or stay away.
The Jabra Enhanced Pro 20 hearing aids were designed to work especially well with Apple iPhones and iPads. It’s called MFi. Although they should work with compatible Android devices, many of the features will work best with Apple products.
I could deal with not being able to make adjustments with the app, although the audiologist at Cosco always seems to get it working after much trying (I spent a whole day trying and couldn’t). What drives me crazy is that it can’t figure our Bluetooth, a technology that’s been around for 20 years. Worse still sometimes the left on works Bluetooth from my phone and doorbell and sometimes the right works. Never both except for a few hours after the audiologist gets it connected to the app. The inconsistency screams ‘Quality Control Issue’. If there were no connections I’d go with they don’t have the technology, but the inconsistency says if they can get one aid working they should be able to get both. Forget the app. Get the Bluetooth working.
My experience with connectivity with the Jabra EP10 (and a Pixel 8 Pro) wasn’t great, but nowhere near as bad as yours. I dropped a connection once or twice a week maybe. It’s not just about the aids btw. Different phones, different Bluetooth radios…
If you have the opportunity to pair them to a different Android phone, that might be illuminating.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and Jabra Enhance Pro 20s. This is the pair that ReSound listed as compatible with the LE Audio protocol option. Since then there are other phones and other hearing aids that can use this protocol. It was buggy after a Samsung update but now it works better then the default ASHA protocol.
For me, Bluetooth works pretty well most of the time.
On occasion (like every week or two) I do only hear in one ear but disconnecting and reconnecting the hearing aids from Bluetooth and/or just toggling Bluetooth. However most of the time they both kick in after a few seconds.
I have not had issues with the app since I added it to the “never auto sleeping apps” list in settings > battery > background usage limits. Before then it would disconnect and reconnect frequently.now it just happens when I get out of Bluetooth range between the hearing aids and the phone.
Clearly to me, the right Android phone matters with the new LE Audio protocol as well as for those using the ASHA protocol which is more prone to needing Bluetooth restarts and such.
I know it can be frustrating. But even iPhone users report problems with Bluetooth connectivity. I hope LE Audio continues to improve and be adopted by more hearing aids and phones.
