I looked at the wax filter in my Phonak I70 R for the first time, after three weeks of use and saw some little clumps of wax, covering perhaps 1/3 of the Cerustop wax filter’s holes. How much blockage would be enough to affect volume? It seems to me the volume is not as great as it was initially, but it’s also possible that I am just adapting to the hearing aids!
Better to brush it off before it fully covers the cerustop filter. Used the brush to brush the cerustop when removing the HA’s.
If there’s any wax visible, change the filters for new ones. If it gets blocked completely, you may think the HA is dead. Don’t ask how I know this… after trip to audiologist…
When I change my wax guards I hear better.
I change them when I realize I have asked speakers to repeat themselves more often.
Some time ago I participated in a Zen meditation program with a monk. Many of us were seniors. I talked to anyone I saw with hearing aids. I was trying to find a good audiologist who could help with mine.
I asked about wax guards. No one in the group knew they had to change their wax guards. Without fail they said that their hearing aid practitioner changed them when they had an appointment. All were active with great physical skills.

If you bought them at Costco, they will clean them and change the wax filters anytime you come into the store. It takes about 20 to 25 minutes. My hearing aid specialist a Costco gave me a free supply of wax guards and domes. Also, she instructed me on how to change them. Whenever the sound becomes muffled or just stops working, I change both the wax guard and the domes at the same time. My Jabra Enhanced Pro 30 wax guards are so tiny that I have never seen any wax on them.
How can it take so long??? Figure only a couple of minutes for skilled experienced operators, unless they are drying the aids.
Even during a weekday, you may not be the only customer who wants their hearing aids cleaned. According to a recent Wall Street Journal article, Costco is the country’s second largest purveyor of hearing aids next to the VA. Therefore, at any given time they may be busy cleaning hearing aids such as on Saturdays. Besides, one reason they keep the cost of the hearing aids so low is because they hope you will purchase something when you come in to get your hearing aids cleaned.
In my case, my high frequencies start sounding bad (static), I notice that when I am listening to music. I don’t wait for them to get dirty, I change them monthly (I don;'t pay extra for them)
Forgive me, but I am easily confused.
Firstly, if Saturday is any given time, then what are all the ten days, and are they unforgiven?
Mainly my confusion though is that I originally responded to what I interpreted as the number of minutes that cleaning the wax filters consumed - specified as ten minutes/six hundred seconds PER filter.
At the time that just seemed an extreme figure.
But maybe with inflation…
or perhaps it was just a
dirty guess.
I add that it’s good to handle the filter upside down during brushing so that cerumen debris doesn’t fall onto the hearing aids, especially the microphone inlets…
I find the time between wax guard varies depending on my ears wax production. My right ear seems to produce more than the left. When a change is needed is usually obvious even with brushing. I always think some sort of solvent would be a good idea don’t know if possible.
Back in the 1980s, a friend used to call Costco the $400 store. Said she could never get her mother out of there for less than that amount, after “just window-shopping” and eating the free samples!
The best deal, besides the reduced price hearing aids, is the $1.50 for the hot dog and a soft drink. Best lunch deal anywhere.
Yep, and good quality and flavor, despite the low price of the hot dog!
but hot dog and giant soda aren’t good for you. Best deal is the chicken. Some hearing aids are good deals too.
Rotisserie chicken! Has got to be a loss leader.

Yes, but the hot dog is all beef and it’s a part of the experience. You don’t eat it every day.
And it conntains 511 mg of sodium, or 1/4th of my daily allowance
As with everything that’s bad for you in life, will you say to yourself while on your deathbed, “If I only hadn’t eaten all those Costco Hot Dogs, I might have five more minutes of life”.
