Wow! That’s a lot of important stuff that’s optional.
I just want to clarify that there’s no such thing as Soft Speech Booster in Genie 2.
There’s the MoreSound Booster feature that’s not in Genie 2 but is in the ON app so the user can turn it on or off at will. It has nothing to do with soft speech boosting. It’s basically a beam forming feature to more aggressively block out sounds from behind and the sides so you can focus more on the front. Basically it takes you out of the open paradigm and make the More function more like a traditional beam forming hearing aid.
Then there’s the Soft Sound Perception (not Soft Speech Booster) setting that is in Genie 2 and has to be adjusted by your audi. The screenshot below shows where it is at the bottom of the screen (Fine Tuning → Sound Controls). Note that the Sound Controls parameters are only available if you use the Oticon VAC+ rationale in your program. If you use one of the other standard rationales, these 2 Sound Controls parameters will not be available.
Not everybody needs to have Speech Rescue (frequency lowering) enabled so it has to be optional for sure.
The Soft Sound Perception is not really “optional” per se. It’s already set to a default value that’s based on your Personalized setting, which every audi should have walked you through in the beginning of the fitting already (what @flashb1024 showed a few posts above) . But you can go in there to tweak it to be more or less aggressive afterward as well.
Thanks so much for the explanation. Who needs speech rescue and who doesn’t?
What are environmental settings?
People with regular ski slope loss that includes severe to profound loss at the high frequency end can benefit from frequency lowering aka Speech Rescue, especially if the receiver cannot effectively amplify the high ends to compensate for the loss. People like me, for example.
People with fairly flat hearing loss, or cookie bite loss (with the bad part in the middle), or reverse ski slope loss, cannot benefit from frequency lowering.
Thank you, V. Much appreciated.
It has been a little over 2 months now with the More1 aids and I almost feel like life is back to normal. Sure I still misunderstand at times what is said and I always will. But to be honest I am so much less dependent on the TV Adapter, I am even able to take calls on the landline without much of a problem. I have also learned that I can even hear the iPhone without it being streaming in a pinch.
I am enjoying music without streaming, but I still need to stream when I listen to audiobooks.
What I do have issues with is people wearing mask, and if there are more than one talking in a noisy environment. But in a quiet environment I can separate speech even when more than one person is talking. I am finding that the MoreSoundBoost is my friend when in noisy environments. Also the MoreSoundBoost is great for hearing the TV without the TV adapter. I have been asked and complimented by a number of people about how my hearing has improved. I have even stopped muting my aids when riding my Vespa, yes it is somewhat noisier but it has proven helpful to hear around me while out riding.
So, Chuck, is it safe to say that you won’t be returning your Mores?
No way, even thinking about, hiring a guard to protect them
Ok little update after i went to audiologist, it seemed that my ha’s had “wrong” setting and i asked him to put the setting that was present in the evaluation ha’s that i was mind blown. Seems now that i hear like i was expecting and i finally have a smile on my mouth. It’s incredible how a setting or two can affect how i can hear. The main difference was that when i purchased the more 2 he put in NAL program and on evaluation ha’s it had put VAC+. So much difference in hearing capability between the two settings for me. I can finally understand people and most importantly in noisy enviroments. I’ll see how it goes before next meeting with him, maybe will need some fine tuning, but nothing big.
Which rationale do you have now? VAC+?
Glad to hear you were able to resolve the issue with your More 2. That’s more like it that the More 2 must be at least equal if not better than the More 3 in some situations, like noisy environment.
I don’t know what kind of hearing loss you have, but the Oticon proprietary VAC+ fitting rationale is designed to have some smart in there to help people with reverse ski slope loss specifically, in addition to the normal ski slope loss.
My guess is that on the More 3 evaluation HAs, your audi used the default which is VAC+ and probably didn’t do REM because it was only for eval. But I may be wrong and maybe he did REM. Then on the More 2 purchase, maybe his REM equipment is external and he didn’t use the REM Autofit inside of Genie 2, so it may be more likely that with his external REM equipment, it cannot be targeted to VAC+ because VAC+ is Oticon proprietary, so he set the More 2 to NAL-NL2 so he can target his REM adjustment to NAL-NL2 as well, which is commonly done. Unfortunately, you like the VAC+ much better for some reason, so him switching to NAL-NL2 thinking it wouldn’t make much difference actually made a big difference for you.
Yes vac+ as he said and it put it on program 2 because when he put it on program 1 there was some problem with the frequencies settings so he put it on program 2 which i use all day and night
Thanks for the clarification.
Oh well i have no idea what was the proccess he did before fitting them to my ears, at least now it is exactly or better like more 3 eva ha’s. Im not sure if it is bad that i like vac+ than NAL-NL2, seems like most people use nal-nl2? He said that vac+ tries to use my brain more or something, i got kinda lost on whats he difference to be honest lol. But in the end with vac+ the voice is more natural and clear to me. I guess everyone has his own personal fittings!
Most HA mfgs have their own proprietary fitting rationales that they design specifically for their HA brand/models. Usually it’s best to use the proprietary fitting rationale supplied by the mfg of the HA brand/model that you wear if you don’t already have a predisposed preference for a standard fitting rationale because the HA mfgs know how to make the most out of their own HAs. But some people already have a predisposed preference for a standard rationale like the NAL-NL2 because they’ve been using this rationale for a long time already.
I wouldn’t necessarily conclude that most people use NAL-NL2. And there’s nothing wrong with you preferring the VAC+. In fact, it makes sense that you like the Oticon VAC+ fitting rationale on an Oticon HA better than something else.
Hi again, was looking at my ha’s settings and i noticed that the right ear comfort silder is disabled for some reason but the left is there. What can be the cause of this disabilty?
@dimitrispap I’m quite baffled by this because your gain curves seem quite symmetrical for both the left and right ear, so there should be no reason for the right control for Soft Sound Perception to blank out like that. If you can PM me the Genie 2 audiogram data that you have, I can try to simulate it on my Genie 2 software to see if I experience the same issue you do or not.
It’s better to take this offline via PM than to continue to side track this thread that Chuck (cvkemp) is sharing his experience with us.
I’ve been using a pair of More 1’s for nearly a week, having moved from OPN 1’s after nearly four years. On first assessment, I am surprised at the difference in sound quality and clarity. It’s subtle but noticeable nonetheless.
Instead of poring through all of the posts on this subject, I do have one annoying complaint that I’m asking some of the wizards in this forum to respond to. The issue is connectivity: On the OPN’s, I have been able to transition smoothly between streaming through the aids and listening to music and podcasts on the car bluetooth with no complications. With the MORE’s I have to “forget” the bluetooth pairing in order to listen to the car media. I then have to reverse the process by re-pairing the instruments after I leave the car. If I don’t disconnect one of the devices(car media or ha’s), nothing happens at all. I have the Subaru Forester 2020, Iphone 7 and iOS 14.7.1.
Any ideas or suggestions. Thanks
