DIY - Self Programming the Oticon Opn – How To

I suppose I could have waited another day to see if the Genie Updater picks up the 2017.2 or not, but because you said it works for you, I believe it and didn’t think it was worth it to verify for myself. Folks on the forum are my human Genie updater, haha. I learned about the update from the forum even before the Genie Updater gets around to do it.

I wouldn’t use the in-situ audiometry solely to prescribe gain because what if the HAs don’t perform as expected (if you haven’t verified them via the REM)? Then the in-situ prescribed gain would be inaccurate.

Like I mentioned earlier, I use in-situ result to compare it against my audiogram from the formal test, and if they track very closely, I have another level of confidence that my HAs are performing as expected, although admittedly a REM is a better verification approach. But in the absence of the availability of a REM (because your audi may be too lazy to do it, or come up with excuses not to do it), then the in-situ helps give you another data point I guess, albeit only at the threshold levels.

Genie 2 does accept bone conduction data as well as UCL data, although I have no idea how/if it uses those data points.

can you make insitu assesment at 5k and 8k? or can you post all fereunecy of formal test with insitu for contrast how much differing?

Where did you get 2017.2?
I see where PVC has it available but the Canada version has a “file not found error”
I’m currently working on installing the British version but was uncertain why it wasn’t an American version. Maybe it doesn’t matter, guess I’ll find out shortly.

I unchecked everything except to have it start with Windows. I just tried again and it still says no updates are available. I have 2017.1 and it says it’s a US version. It’s not particularly important to me as I don’t have and Opn, but I still find it strange.

@pvc I found that putting a string of periods after the short answer works. And, the software will truncate the periods and get rid of them for you.

:canada: works now…

By the way, for anyone using the Oticon FittingLINK 3.0, there’s a new firmware upgrade for it now (3.20). Genie 2 should inform you that there’s an upgrade available and you can choose to upgrade or not. The upgrade is pretty fast (a minute or so).

Thanks for the heads up on the firmware upgrade for both the FittingLINK and the OPN aids. Like you my software update warning didn’t trigger so I downloaded Genie 2.2 from the Canadian web site. I now have it installed and all firmware is updated.

I tried the in-situ audioometry tool and found that my results were a bit different from my previous audiogram so I have updated my aids to the new results and will see how it works out tomorrow (just did it now). I really like that new tool and look forward to using it to check my hearing as time goes by.

I find the in-situ audiometry very useful, too. When I re-prescribed to the in-situ audiogram, I could tell that I can hear a little better. Obviously no matter how accurate the device used by the audi to create your audiogram is, it’s still not the HA you’re wearing. So it’s really not about accuracy of the device anymore. It’s more about using the exact final amplification device that you’re actually wearing and prescribe to the hearing loss as measured by THAT actual HA device.

I loved using in-stu with my Phonak’s. I would input tones, save the settings and try out the new settings and then rerun in-stu again on certain frequencies until I was happy with the results. I need to get a serial to USB adaptor cable for my serial Hipro so I can do a firmware upgrade for my OPN’s. Then use the new in-stu features on my OPN’s. I hope the results work as well as phonak did for me.

Just a little terminology clarification for future readers;
Programming the Oticon Opn with a wired programming device (mini Pro/Hi Pro) requires the following extra gear;

  1. CS44 Programming Cables
  2. CS53 Flex Strips

I agree - we now have what seems to be an excellent way of measuring our hearing capabilities. Seems to me that adding this feature to hearing aids is the wave of the future. I wonder how long it will take competitors to add the same thing and whether or not it will change the way that audiologists actually measure their patients hearing.(at least once they are fitted with hearing aids).

I would further speculate that if over the counter hearing aids end up with this feature and it is easy enough for the average person to accomplish it might change the whole paradigm of how hearing aids are dispensed. Of course this would not work well with people with complicated hearing loss - just those like myself who have simple high-frequency loss that is easy to fit.

I will be getting my Oticon OPN 1’s this coming Wednesday. I’m like most on this forum and want to be able to tweak my own Hearing Aids. I’m replacing the Phonak Audeo IX that I got 10 years ago. I was never happy with the fitting and would have loved to been able make adjustments myself.

I’m giving up on finding a Fittinglink 3.0 Kit and now looking at the getting the Noahlink Wireless. Can anyone confirm that the Noahlink Wireless will work with Oticon OPN?

Thank you,
Mike

A&A. But you need to know about how you plan to do Firmware updates on your Opn’s.

My plan is to let my Audiologist do the FW updates. FW updates become less frequent as the hardware ages. I’ll need to make sure the ones I pick up are at rev 5 to work properly with the Connectclip Streamer. If I do my own FW updates and have problems with my new aids that are hardware related, I don’t want to take the chance of having my warranty voided because I was tinkering.

I’m not married to the Wireless solution and wouldn’t mind going the Mini Pro route if I could purchase a complete kit all in one place.

The cost to assembly a complete Mini Pro kit might be close to what I would pay for the Noahlink Wireless. $420 shipped.

Ali Express has the Mini Pro for $229.14 after shipping. I’m not sure how much more for the cables and connectors once I locate them, but I think I saw one pair of cables priced a $99.

Great information in your DIY Programming threads by the way.

Edit: I just saw your link that answered my question. Thanks much!
Mike

After going through that big explanation about getting a Wireless solution, I ended up putting together and buying a Mini Pro kit. $299.13 total.

Purchasing the Flex Strips was a bit confusing. It would be very easy to order the wrong pair.

On a personal note, I’m surprised at how excited I am about getting new hearing aids. I can’t wait see my 2 1/2 year old grandson and understand what he’s saying to me. Half the time now I have to get his mom or grandma to tell me what he is trying to say to me. I’m hoping that will be a thing of the past.

Your order page is so damn confusing.

No one knows whether they are ordering Programming Pills or Flex Strips? No one knows whether they are ordering one or two. I am embarrassed to recommend this to other forum members. Why don’t you split these two items into separate pages.

You added the tiny picture of flex strips at my previous request. You should have a large picture, like this;

If you have Oticon accessories (Phone/TV Adapter/ConnectClip) then pay careful attention to the settings for those accessories!

What a GREAT thread! I bought my Opn’s early 2017, the Genie 2 a couple months after and really haven’t used it after doing some tweaks at the beginning. I didn’t know squat until I started reading all of your posts… Just spent the last hour or two updating Genie to V 2017.2 (what a painfully slow download). I should probably find someone to do my Opn firmware update, pretty sure they’re like V2. My audi retired and closed the business. Are any of you in San Diego by chance? I’d rather pay one of you some $ to update these then buy the equipment.

And if any of you are interested in a Webex and helping me with your vast knowledge of this program, I’d be grateful and would even be willing to kick down a few bucks for the help :wink:
