Speech to text in a moving vehicle

Hello everyone. I’ve been experimenting with my iPhone in the car to help me understand speech while driving. The aim is to keep my eyes more on the road so that I wouldn’t need to look at the lips of the passenger or passengers in the rear.
I’ve been using the Notes App in iOS mounted below the rear view mirror to capture speech. See Pic.
I’ve also used a send email window to adjust the color and size of the text to capture speech… works as well as the notes app.

I’m getting mixed results with these Free Apps but generally it does help. Works even with the radio on but when it’s commercial time the iPhone picks up the speech from the ad or the announcers on the radio stations which can be a plus. But mostly it works well without music or the radio on.

So….i’m trying to avoid a subscription to a paid App that would do a better job of capturing speech to text while driving.
Has anyone done this? Using speech to text in a moving vehicle or recommends an App for this?

Pay attention to driving

No need for that response. It’s no different than glancing at maps, your radio station, your speed or fuel gauge etc.

I DO worry about all these additional things to look at on newer car dashboards–that prevent one from looking at the road and adjacent traffic!!! A better plan, it seems to me, is “no talking to the driver while car is in motion”!

Excellent plan.

Can I suggest that reading text while driving is not an advisable thing.

It is illegal in the UK as it is seen as too dangerous and is judged to be on a par with drunk driving.

But looking at your photo, you are in the US where the roads are somewhat different to those here (but the fatal road traffic accident rate in the US is twice that of the UK per mile traveled).

Well I see this went off the rails pretty quickly, road safety is important, but what about a remote microphone that you could keep in the back for people to use?

That sounds like a very sensible (and possibly cheap) solution.

A alternative one of the audiologists I’ve seen said she often fits widex hearing aids for taxi drivers as they can be set to pick up sound from behind.

When you have a profound hearing loss no hearing aid is going to help you if you cannot read lips. Not even a remote mic via Bluetooth to hearing aid works all the time for speech especially when the subject or the object changes and new speech is said.
No one likes to ignore your passenger/s for hours on the road without occasional conversation.

Again. For example Testa software allows one to read simple texts on the screen. Speed reading is no different than you adjusting the radio, looking in the rear view mirrors, which is turning your head off the road ahead to a passenger, landmark or watching nearby traffic
This is going nowhere here but thanks.

Yes it is… Plus any cop would site you for obstructed view with the setup in your picture. If you’re that stone deft maybe someone else should do the driving.

You would be fined for reading messages on your phone while driving here in Australia. It distracts from driving. Pull over and turn the car off if you need to use the phone. Has been responsible for accidents.

IANAL, but you might be violating Title 75, §4524 : "Obstruction on front windshield“ of the PA code. There is also Pa code on placement of dash cams that they cannot be in an airbag zone. This might factor in here even though what you have is not a dash cam.

In the UK that would get you a load of points and a fine. More if you were involved in an accident with it.

Driving whilst distracted is a big thing here and they doubled the penalties a few years ago.

That’s why smart glasses paired with hearing aid might be amazing future. Discreet speech to text in real time. Hope some HA manufacturers will recognize that.

You evidently don’t get it

Picture is one of obstructed vision, probably impermissible in every jurisdiction.

Don’t look at your GPS, The law is watching lol.

@mstrmac, when using GPS, you just take a quick glance and keep an eye on the arrow, not for the whole time.

With such a long text, you need to divert your attention from driving for a long moment, too long. That’s enough to cause an accident.

This is not malice, this is a real, legitimate concern.

Looking at a sentence is the same as glancing at your gps. Don’t be difficult. You pick up the speakers subject/object and are able to understand and converse without turning your head from situational awareness around your vehicle.

Various brands of hearing aids can pick up sound from behind–just depends on the setting! My ‘Outdoor’ setting does so–then I greatly lower the volume (on the Jabra EP20).
