The S9 came in two different android versions. Some 9 and others 10.
That’s a big Android difference.
I think your confusing BLE with LE Audio, you need android 13 at least.
It looks like Samsung is rolling out support for some of the older phones.
Yeah but definitely not anything as old as S10 or S9, actually it does seem they
( the manufacturers) want us all to update our phones/ gadgets to get the best of any new features, I suppose this is to be expected.
My S9 is running android 10 right now. I don’t think I upgraded from 9. I’ve had it since about June 2020.
I might upgrade but I will not be happy giving up headphone jack on my S9. Maybe I can stream into my Rexton Reach OK if I do it, hope it’s as good as using my earbuds, which sound real good to me. I can run EQ software doing that too, I think, although it sounds great without it to me, a lot better than my unaided ears listening to my stereos.
Ha yeah I agree, it’s one thing phone’s of today don’t care about, I miss it, but Bluetooth has overtaken the requirement it seems, LE Audio is the intended industry standard for now.
You can get a USB C to 3.5 mm adapter and continue to use your headphones.
Yes your right there.
Off on a bit of a tangent. Sorry. I hate the word ‘support’ in tech articles. So, in this case Samsung ‘supports’ Auracast because it can broadcast an Auracast stream, so why don’t they just say exactly that? So, in that use case it definitely has to be a newish phone. But ‘supporting’ Auracast can also mean assisting an Auracast-enabled set of buds or aids in taking an Auracast broadcast. Any phone with good old Bluetooth LE should be able to be made to do that.
So why not be a little more precise in your use of language tech journalists (or generative AI in a lot of cases I suspect)? Glad I got that off my chest.
……
…
USB-C → 3.5mm headphone jack adapter? Is it bulky? How much do they cost?
Thanks for that shot. A question: Do you have to go into phone settings and switch from charging to listening for the port and back again when you need to charge?
I just read a couple Quora reviews comparing Android with iOS and am thinking maybe for the 1st time in my life I will get an Apple phone! Best reason I see is that according to them, Android drops support after ~18 mo. but iOS support lasts 2x as long or longer even. I haven’t dug deep into this one little bit yet, though. I want to be able to copy music MP3s (many are 3 hours long) to my phone from my network access server (Synology) and then listen to them using the phone, hopefully using HAs and the phone’s BT. Using a USB-C → 3.5mm adapter using earbuds would be OK except that I don’t get the HA’s advantages, plus going from earbuds to HAs and back is a hassle, obviously. Anyway, I figure get the HAs first, adapt, have them tweaked, readapt and then, I suppose, think about phone upgrading.
The FCC has just passed a new requirement in USA that all phones must be compatible with hearing aids, so this is a big push to manufacturers to get LE Audio sorted once and for all.
Pixel support is now I think five years.
Samsung might be longer.
If you research it you’ll find it.
You can’t charge and listen with the headphones.
If you get a QI phone that charges magnetically through the back i would guess you can listen and charge at the same time.
The new Pixel and Galaxy come with BLE.
Samsung I know has Auracast.
I have a Pixel 6a.
I get three Android OS upgrades.
I get at least one more.
I believe I get two years after that security upgrades.
Ok looked it up.
Pixel 9 gets 7 years security and OS updates.
Well no one could complain with that amount of time given, especially when you consider that most won’t keep their HAs for that long anyways.
That’s exactly what I was thinking.
Google finally figured that out. It just took then a while.
