Restaurant noise reduction with Oticon More

Using Oticon More2. Audiologist tried many different programs for reducing background noise in Restaurants. All that they do is also decrease my guest’s voice by the same amount.
Has anybody had success for that application?

No matter what HA manufacturers say in their marketing spill, there is no such thing as “speech in noise”; it’s just noise. Present microprocessors cannot compete with what a human brain can do in such circumstances, assuming that the person’s hearing is not impaired.

Live listen on iPhone or Phone-Clip is about the best for one to one in difficult circumstances.

@hmeier4799: Hello, and welcome to the Forum. I’m an old codger, and I don’t frequent restaurants very much, but when I’m in noisy environments, the Speech in Noise program on my More1s is highly effective, for me.

I’m sure, if you’ve sone any reading here, at all, you will have learned that a good fitter is the key to success. Everyone’s hearing is different, so a single “canned” program needs to be “tweaked” to accommodate your particular circumstances.

I encourage you to be patient, and to “reach out” to your audiologist and even to other Forum members if something doesn’t work for you, right off the bat.

With the hearing aids I’ve worn, the skill of the fitter has actually proven more important than the brand of hearing aid.

Good luck!

I have the More1 aids and I only use the default program and at least for me I handle speech in noise very well. I have my issues with a few places that echo a lot.
At least for my in the restaurants I go to I have found if I lower the volume of my aids one level I cut out enough of the noise to allow me to hear my tablet guess with in reason as long as they aren’t all talking at once.

@cvkemp: Chuck, don’t you use the SoundBoost program quite a lot?

I use to but I deleted the ON app well over a month ago. No ON app no MoreSoundBoost

I have the More1 and for me the sound in noise program works great. Nothing is perfect for sure but the program does what I want it to do which is to hear the person across from me better and push the louder noise to the background.

@lgbuck62: I agree with you about the Oticon Speech in Noise program (that’s how my audiologist labeled it on my iPhone).

Apart from my default program and DSL
v5a, which I had installed to improve the audibility of “critter noises”, SIN is the most useful “canned” program I have ever had on any of my hearing aids. The first time I used it was in my mechanic’s shop, and it blew me away, it was so effective!

What is the “default program”? I will ask my audiologist for it

The default program is VAC+ in my getup - just the proprietary Oticon fitting rationale.

It is the number 1 program or the program that is the one the aids power up in. If the aids are programmed correctly it is the only program needed. My other programs are T-coil, and MYMusic, plus I have the TV adapter, which by the way I seldom use any of the other programs anymore.

My first 3 sets of aids only had the program the aids powered up to, and there wasn’t any way to adjust the volume levels either so I have adapted and that is all I want. It put a lot of pressure on my audiologist to get my setting correct.

What are your speech comprehension scores. If the scores are low than aids are going to be pretty much useless in a noisy environment

Without my aids my word recognition scores are now about 60%, now before the 2 years of therapy that I had it was closer to 45%. With my aids I have 90%+. But like I said it depends on how well the aids are set up.

Out of curiosity what kind of therapy did you do to improve your comprehension scores

I took speech therapy from a high school speech therapist that also volunteers at the VA due to her father’s and husband’s hearing loss due to the military service. And to be honest her students in the high school were all hearing impaired. Mostly the therapy was filling in the missing syllables, when listening to people talk. It also helps with the word recognition score.

I still haven’t been in a noisy restaurant after buying my new aids recently. These also have a directionality feature that may help with that situation, perhaps along with the speech in noise feature. If I have one! still learning what the aids can do…

@jeffrey: Time for a late evening snack down to the IHOP!

Or go to a Chili’s restaurant at any time
