Hi, i am trying to make calls with skype on my iphone through bluetooth. Regular calls work fine on my haring aids but when i do group calls on skype i have problems hearing because the sound is stopping then coming and so on, it is never steady, unless i switch to phone speaker sound. Anyone having the same problem? Any suggestions? Thanks
Is this on a laptop connected to your OPNs through the ConnectClip?
If yes, are you able to hear sounds from other apps OK, like from YouTube videos?
She’s using her iPhone and not a laptop.
Thanks for the reply, i connect my iphone to the opns without connect clip. Audiologist said i dont need connectclip to pair iphone with my hearing aids. Regular calls, youtube videos, radio etc all work fine on my hearing aids but when i launch skype/viber for calls i got problems, like voice is cancelling or something while they are speaking so i hear half words.
Oh sorry, you did mention iPhone. I almost would have said that maybe it’s because Skype and Viber uses wifi or data connection so if you have poor wifi or data connection then it’s possible that the audio issues can arise. But because you said that switching to phone speaker sound solves the problem, that would indicate that it’s not a data connection issue.
Have you maybe tried Facetime or Messenger for group calls as well if you can? If they all don’t work well either, then maybe it’s an issue with your iOS version when using with the OPNs. If they work out well but Skype and Viber don’t, then at least you know it’s probably the apps.
I’ve used all kinds of video chat apps like Facetime, Messenger, Zoom, Viber, Zalo, WeChat, etc with my OPN 1s with no issue, unless I or the other person have bad wifi or data connection. But I don’t do group calls, only 1 on 1 through these apps.
Haven’t tried facetime nor messenger for calls yet. Interesting thing is that before i switch to iphone i was using the connect clip for my android phone and i was still having issues with skype/viber calls like i had a bad connection or something but that was not the case. The same issue was there if i was using pc desktop viber/skype as well. Everything was working well except calls with viber/skype. I will contact my audiologist tomorrow and ask for help with this issue. I suspect my issue comes from the hearing aids? I hope not and it is just a setting or two i miss or something. Thanks for the replies. Will tell tomorrow for updates.
If all the other apps are working well except calls with Viber/Skype, I wouldn’t say that the issue is with the hearing aids. Otherwise you would have had the same issues with the other apps like YouTube or iTunes or iPhone telephone or using Android phones or laptop PC via the ConnectClip.
But if your HAs are still under warranty, yeah sure, you can rule out the HAs being the problem by getting your audi to replace them if you can. But I somehow still don’t think it’s the HAs because you’re saying it works fine with other things on the iPhone or through the ConnectClip for Android phones or laptop. Maybe it’s just Viber/Skype not being able to handle the audio well for group calls for some reason.
Ok i think i’ve found what was the problem. My wifi repeater somehow was sending data very slow and i did a speed test and was getting like 3-5 mbps speed on my phone. I connected to the router wifi and now it get 60mbps data speed weirdily. Tested viber/skype call and work fine without losing words and buffering. Oh well i will monitor it and see how it goes.
Ok, maybe the Viber/Skype app is more data intensive than other video chat apps. It’s possible that the other apps resort to compression before transmission to help reduce the data size being transmitted, but the Viber/Skype app doesn’t compress data, who know?
You can always try to replace the repeater with a faster one if you still need one to extend your range.
yeah exactly, but this one i bought is of the popular ones. Who know about how viber/skype data works. In the end i finally enjoy call through my phone and i am happy !
Hi again, regarding the streaming from iphone to my opn’s. Here is what i’ve found out. I usually listen to radio at my office work on my iphone to my opn’s, when i listen it is buffering every 10 seconds because their internet is slow, so i did a speedtest back at my place on my 100mbps internet plan and while it is playing radio the speed drops to 11-13mbps lol, i redo it to double check and again the same speed results. What is going on i was telling myself, i didn’t know web radio consume too much data. I disconnected the hearing aid’s from the phone and started listening from iphone’s speakers, did the speedtest again and it was showing around 95 mbps speed. Connected back the hearing aids, started the radio did the test once again it showed 11-13mbps. Like what?! Anyone have come to this issue?
edit: it happens whenever i stream audio to my hearing aids no matter what is it (youtube, radio, music etc)
I have Century Link DSL Gigabit connection in my house. With 5 GHz wifi connection, I get around 250 mbps on the speed test for download. With YouTube video running on my iPhone which is connected to the same network, streaming into my OPN 1, I still get the same 250 mbps wifi speed. So I don’t see any significant drop in speed while streaming from my iPhone like you do. And my test involves video data as well as audio, so it’s a more heavily loaded test than yours which is just running audio only for your internet radio. I have an iPhone 7 Plus.
I’m guessing that maybe for some reason, if the streaming from the iPhone to the OPN is on the 2.4 GHz band, and maybe you’re using the 2.4 GHz connection from your router to your iPhone, and those two 2.4 GHz signals interfere with each other, causing your wifi slowdown. Can you verify that you connect your iPhone to the 5 GHz connection of the router and not the 2.4 GHz connection, to see if that makes any difference?
You are a genius Volusiano lol, you were right. I switched to 5ghz mode and did the same tests, the speed not only didn’t drop but also gained a tad more mbps. So i assume the opn’s connect with the iphone on the 2.4ghz band. On the other hand it may be a bit frustrating because not everyone has 5ghz routers i guess. Wondered if i can change the band that hairing aids are transmitting on? Thanks by the way, i was so frustrated lol.
edit: i remembered i did a test using the connect clip with the iphone instead of MFI connection and it wasn’t buffering. so i guess its the mfi thing that works that way and interferes with wifi signals at 2.4ghz.
Hearing aids use Bluetooth (or the Apple MFi add ons to Bluetooth) to connect to devices such as your phone and that operates in the 2.4 GHz unlicensed band that older versions of WiFi also operate in. Newer versions of Wifi include 5 GHz and many of the newer Wifi enabled devices (AC spec or newer) can operate simultaneously in both. The newest versions of Wifi add another band with wider “channels” for higher Wifi data rates.
I expect hearing aids will continue with Bluetooth as it can be low energy (LE) and the higher frequencies are absorbed more than the 2.5 GHz band so transmission through walls and obstacles and such is worse at 5Ghz and higher. Wifi devices typically operate at MUCH higher transmit powers (up to 1 Watt) than any hearing aid to help compensate for losses.
Unfortunately I don’t think that’s an option.
This got me curious so I switched my iPhone to connect to the 2.4 GHz band in my router, also switched my laptop as well, which I use to run the speed test to the 2.4 GHz band in parallel with the iPhone running YouTube.
I didn’t get a significant reduction in the speed test with this setup, however. I wonder if maybe the way your router implements the 2.4 GHz band using some wireless standard that runs into interference? My router runs on 802.11n and 802.11ac.
my understand is that Blue Tooth and wifi uses different channels within the 2.4ghz band, not sure how many channels that there are or how wide the channels are for wifi or Bluetooth, but I have a number of older devices that use the 2.4 ghz band only and I haven’t had any issues. I can stream audiobooks for my iPhone to my OPNS1 aids from about 30 feet away. But I have an adobe home with very thick outer walls, and the lots here in this country setting or at least a half acre for each lot. And I have a WIFI 6 mash set up that allows me to reach even my front porch and my back patio.
