Phonak Lumity Naida 90 UP BTE Review

I like the graphite grey, chestnut and black.

Not a fan of the rest. I hated my sand beige NHS P70 at first but now I don’t mind them.

I properly will get black but if I upgrade again, it’ll be different colours each time especially if the casing doesn’t change. It’s so I can know which is which.

@PeterH What colour did the NHS give you?

Did you get the L90’s on the 28th @michael1, if so, your thoughts please  Cheers Kev.

Just for a bit of fun… The slow release night time image below, is a view from Ormond Castle on the Black Isle, (Now in ruins, but a famous place in Scottish history) it is in the Scottish Highlands, the streaks are stars, slowly moving across the hemisphere, if you look closely at about 12 0’clock, you will see 2 x green (Aurora Borealis Towers), the ancient village ahead at 1 o’clock, is Avoch, (Pronounced Awk) I lived on that road on the seafront for approximately 15 years… Unfortunately, I didn’t take this image, but I kinda know who did… It’s quite stunning, I use this image as my iMac desktop background… Enjoy. Cheers Kev

My favorite color is graphite grey, which I ordered my new Oticon Xceeds in. I like all three colors mentioned here too.

Happy new year all. Quiet one for us in Northern England. Watching TV and staying up for the event to look after our 2 dogs, as fireworks are likely to stress them out shortly.

Not the best year for many in our village, as we’ve lost a few lovely people :frowning:

Happy New Year all! I just joined this forum while researching my new HA’s and it seems like a good place  I came to this discussion because I’m doing a trial of Phonak Nadia L-UP, Unitron Stride B-UP, and Resound Enzo Q.

For some background I am 44 yo and have been wearing hearing aids since I was 3 and still miss my analog Phonaks I got when I was 15 to this day. Since then I have had a hybrid Unitron (pretty good) and a digital Oticon Chili programmed to match analog as much as possible (just okay).

After my left ear Oticon went kaput early pandemic and I also went fully WFH I’ve been living with one hearing aid. When I managed to break the earhook on that remaining aid my wonderful husband finally put his foot down and I went to a local hearing aid fitter who set me up with Resound, Phonak, and Unitron trials.

After almost a month I’ve settled on Phonak and the main reason is improved speech recognition. I honestly prefer the Unitron overall for sound but the speech is garbage for me - probably comparable to my old Oticons but unacceptable compared to the Phonak and the Resound.

Unfortunately, while the Resound had the best music and overall sound it created truly painful sounds at the higher frequencies - a big problem if you have dogs with high pitched barks and also generally annoying for all sorts of things. It also had an annoying habit of focusing on the loudest person in the room whether I was listening to them or not. The Bluetooth also kept dropping out and with no HA mic it wasn’t true hands free for calls which meant I would never use the Bluetooth at all.

Finally the Phonaks - they are too quiet and too adaptable. It’s all very annoying but overall the sound is good and music and streaming sounds amazing after my Oticons and after the fitter adjusted the environment balance I get the environment sounds I want. And so it’s good but not great sound wise.

But here’s the thing - I was able to talk to a salesperson and purchase a stand up paddle board today with only a little help from my husband (and even that was probably mostly habitual). There are lots of little stories like that over here the last week. My husband and I have been laughing about how much he is trying to help and I don’t need it and also how hard it is for me to just stay engaged now for a full conversation. I know I can do it now but I’m not used to it :joy:

So long story short I am also loving the Phonaks though for me they are not without their problems. In the end the positives outweigh the negatives for me.

Welcome to the forum @Heather_R and Happy New Year  …As with all hearing aids, It is always a compromise, and nothing is ever perfect, when we get down to the nitty gritty, there aren’t many choices for “newer tech” in the severe/profound thresholds… Personally, I wasn’t a great lover of analog aids, I used them for over 10 years, or more, I hated the fact they amplified everything, but in truth, early digital aids where not a great improvement over analog, it’s probably only in the last 5 or 6 years that we have seen big strides, the advent of hearing aid Bluetooth, was indeed a game changer  That is a heavy loss you have Heather, and I am surprised, but delighted you get some enjoyment out of music, most music sounds out of tune to me… I found the NAL NL2 fitting formula best suited my needs, it gave me the best overall clarity, good luck with Naida Lumity’s, Cheers Kev

Thanks, Kev - my hearing had a big drop when I was in my early teens and I think those early years with (relatively) better hearing helped a lot. I do feel very lucky to get enjoyment out of music :slightly_smiling_face: and I’m very grateful for the ability to have Bluetooth streaming now, it really is a game changer for me.

Back to the Phonaks, I had a birthday dinner with my husband last night and for the first time in a long time I was able to talk with the waiter and ask questions about the items on the menu and then afterwards hang out with some friends at the local wine shop and chat outside with the traffic noise in the background. Tonight we watched some more episodes of The Mandalorian and I got to try the TV setting which I liked quite a lot!

Currently using a hearing aid tech for my fitting as I need a new audiologist and they are all weeks or months out for appointments - he’s a good person and I like him a lot but I think he may be a little out of his depth with my loss and figuring out the programming. I will ask him about NLA NL2 and see if he can attempt that.

@Baltazard I think the reason I liked the Unitron is because the old tech matches what is familiar to me - I am trying to get out of the mindset of familiar means good and really retrain my brain to what is better for interacting with other people. I am naturally an introvert but still love hanging out with friends and the Phonaks are the best for speech for me even if I’m not overall thrilled with the sound in every aspect.

Unfortunately no HA that has a battery door can be fully waterproof - they are IP68 which is fine for light rain and sweat but I won’t be exercising in them

That sounds very promising, especially being able to converse with the waiter @Heather_R … Reading your other post, on CI’s, you don’t appear to want CI’s, so Roger ALD’s (Assistive Listening Devices) might be a viable alternative, they are expensive, but can enhance your listening experience greatly… I bought most of mine by shopping around on eBay  Also Phonak TV Connector 2, is a brilliant piece of kit, for TV listening (I have 3 of them) they also work with PC’s, Laptops, Stereos, Zoom calls on your PC or Mac… Trying NAL NL2 fitting formula, should be a fairly simple process for your technician, you may or may not like it, we are all different, especially when it comes to hearing aids, and personal preferences… Good Luck, cheers Kev

TV Connector V1 is just fine too. I just have it as “manual connect with beep”. It’s always just 2 button presses away, and it can stay on all the time.

Never tried the V1 Peter… I got the first V2 about 5 years ago, came as a freebe with a set of Marvel 90 RIC’s, 2nd one was used from eBay, 3rd one, I believe I bought it from @Zebras on here? TV Connector 2 is a very versatile piece of kit, I like the ambient balance feature, if I am plugged into a football match, and others are in the household playing games (Loudly :upside_down_face: ) I can just fade them out, using the app, and concentrate on the finer things in life  I don’t know what fitting formula you use Peter? When I started using NAL NL2, I didn’t particularly like it, but I persisted with it, and eventually acclimatized to it, took about a month on the Naida M70’s, nowadays it sounds perfectly suited to my needs… Cheers Kev

@kevels55
Hi. Yes the Ambient balance is a great feature and works well for both versions.

My Audio uses Adaptive Phonak Digital, so I’ll leave the P90s as they are.

I shall give NAL-NL2 a go on the Marvels right now as I’m off down the pub in an hour

Just done a fresh fitting on NAL-NL2. I’ve just disabled Sound Recover 2, as I don’t think I need it with my loss.

I shall report back after testing

Cheers

Thank you Peter, I look forward to your assessment of the NAL NL2 fitting formula, that should be interesting… Cheers Kev

@kevels55
The moment I walked in, I knew the high frequencies were not enough, as speech was poor from the first interaction. These were as first fit with full moulds.

I am using Music as default in both sets by the way. On swapping back to P90, each ear improved with high end. So back home (after a few) to reprogramme.

Just added 3dB to G50 2k-8k and 2dB to G65 2k-8k. Will try again tomorrow.

I should claim expenses lol

Cheers Peter
