Oticon Opn S 1 Trouble Using With Iphone 6

When my audiologist paired my aids to my iPhone a month ago, I was as happy as could be. The clarity was terrific. Problem is the pairing is often lost. I use my cell phone to call someone and then am embarrassed when I can’t hear them and have to explain the problem.

Each morning I make sure they are paired to the Opticon ap. I usually check my iPhone setting to make sure they are connected to the phone. 99% of the time the settings on the phone and the ap all show it connected, but when a call comes in, the audio often isn’t going into the phone. The settings on the phone and the Oticon ap show all is synched, but my ears tell me differently!

Have other people had this problem??? Does Oticon have troublesome software or another problem causing this? I’d sure like to hear how you resolved this.

There is only one instance when I can be sure a call is connected to the phone. That’s when a call comes in and I see the “audio” symbol with a check mark next to my hearings aids name. Then I can clearly hear the audio coming right through my hearing aids. I welcome any help.

The iPhone 6 can’t be updated to the latest IOS, from what you are saying it sounds more like your iPhone than the hearing aids. I would suggest to forget the hearing aids in settings hearing aids. Reboot the iPhone them go through the process of pairing the aids to the iPhone.
Also it maybe simply be that you need to reboot the iPhone. I would suggest that first if you haven’t in while.

I use Oticon S 1 aids and had an iPhone 6 until last week when the battery gave up and I found that the latest version of the Oticon ON app requires iOS 13 or later (the iPhone 6 will not run that).

I second what cvkemp has written but I’ll expand a bit.

I suggest that you ensure your phone is on the latest version of iOS for the iPhone 6 - last time I checked that was 12.5 and that version was released not long ago. I would expect that your aids have the latest version of the firmware for the aids but I would check using the ON app. It shows 8.0 for mine and I think that was current as of couple of months ago. You might also check that audio routing for “call audio” is set to Always Hearing Devices - that should ensure that calls are sent to your hearing aids (Settings → Accessibility → Hearing Devices → Audio Routing → Call Audio). The sequence/naming may be slightly different for your iPhone 6 as I’m referencing my new iPhone 12 mini running iOS 14.3.

You should not need to use the ON app for calls - the MFi parts of iOS should handle the routing of the call audio to the hearing aids. You can triple click the phone home button to bring up the MFI controls that are independent of the ON app. See the following Apple URL:

My provider was told by Oticon tech support that shutting down all apps on the phone and powering it off and then booting it each day would result in fewer issues. I realize that is not what one would expect of fairly modern hardware and software but I found that if I did that before I put in my aids for the day, I had very few problems.

I have an iPhone XR running the latest version of iOS (I think it’s 14.3). What you are experiencing occasionally happens for me also. I reported this problem to my audiologist and I was put in contact with an Oticon representative. They are aware of this problem, but to my knowledge, no fix is available.

Previously, I had two different iPhone 7s and the problem happened with both of them, through various versions if iOS. If it’s the phone or iOS, it’s something that’s endemic. I don’t know if the problem is the phone or the hearing aids.

I have found that turning the iphone bluetooth off and on causes the hearing aids to reconnect with the phone. If I turn the hearing aids off and on, it accomplishes the same thing. (It’s easier to turn the bluetooth off and on, so that’s what I do.) I use live listen to check if the hearing aids are actually connect, not just appearing to be connected. Have you tried turning bluetooth off and on to see if it makes any difference? Give that a try and report back if it makes any difference. Also, do you have your hearing aids connected with any other device and are you using a ConnectClip?

I have the same problem with spotty linkage from the phone to the aids. I have an iPhone 6S and it has the latest Apple version 14.2. I don’t use ConnectClip. Is this an item I have to purchase? If it isn’t necessary or extremely helpful, I’d rather not put out any more $$ than I have already spent for the new Oticon S1aids.

I use the routine of turning off Blue Tooth on my phone before turning on my HAs. The phone always says my aids are connected in Settings and the app also says the same thing, except this afternoon. I opened the Oticon app and tapped the “Remote Control” menu and tapped the microphone icon, the text was: “Your hearing aids are not streaming sound at the moment” and to: 1. Tap OPEN to open the “Control Center” and 2. Select your hearing aid(s) on the list to enable streaming via your hearing aid(s). When I taped OPEN, the next screen only showed the iPhone and Roku, but no aids. Shouldn’t the hearing aids show up on that screen? I would think so. If the aids aren’t listed, the app isn’t picking up my aids. It sounds like a trip to my Audiologist is in order.

This is very frustrating. It must be triple frustrating for the hard of hearing who depend on their phones for business dealings. I really feel for them. I am retired and get around the problem, frustrating at this is. Either Apple or all the hearing aid companies are dropping the ball and should put all their resources on solving the problem.

Here’s another question: Does this problem occur with Android phones?

If you are only using your OPN hearing aids with your iPhone, then you don’t need a ConnectClip, because you can use the iPhone as the microphone. I’m not sure what you are referring to by “Control Center”. Is that part of iOS?

You should be able to listen to your hearing aids either using the microphone in the OPN app or using Live Listen which is part of iOS. If you can’t hear audio from your hearing aids when you click on the microphone in the OPN app or Live Listen, even after turning bluetooth (and / or your hearing aids) off and on again, then you might want to try going into the accessibility menu, forget the hearing aids and re-pair them. If that doesn’t fix the problem, then you should visit your audiologist.
