Oticon Intent - hands free calling on iPhone

I’m on a trial of Oticon Intent after being on Oticon More for a few years. I’m trying to get hands free calling working but it’s not working as I expect.

Audio is streaming fine as they are connected via MFi in the accessibility settings.

I have an iPhone 16 Pro with latest iOS 18

The mic is definitely not using mic on the HA themselves but using my phone.

How do I get this to work? I’ve seen other threads on this topic, but the answers typically have been problems with old models of iPhones or with android.

I have a pair of Jabra Enhanced Pro 2 hearing aids and an iPhone 13. I don’t know if the Otikon hearing aids employ the touch to answer feature for hands free receiving calls. The Jabra hearing aids do have that feature and my voice quality through the hearing aids leaves a lot to be desired. My wife, describes my voice coming over the hearing aids as sounding as if I am talking to her iPhone through the other opposite end of a large metal barrel. I have just gotten into the habit of getting my phone out of my pocket and using the speaker function, which does go to my hearing aids, but my voice goes to the caller from the iPhone.

My Oticon 1s will answer if I touch the hearing aid and hang up if I touch as well. I have to remind myself not to fiddle by brushing a hand near my ears while talking. It uses the internal HA microphones, but audio quality seems to drop the further you are from the bluetooth phone. Volume is controlled by the phone ringer buttons. I’m reasonably happy with the arrangement.

I imagine you have already solved this, but your post seems to indicate that the setting has not yet been activated on your iPhone 16. I am running the latest iOS on my iPhone 15 and I set up the phone to use my Intents to answer by doing the following:
Firstly, ensure that your HAs are already paired with the iPhone according to instructions. Then

  • go to Settings/Accessibility
  • Hearing devices/Audio Routing/Call Audio
  • Select either Always Hearing Devices or Automatic
Then the calls should go to your hearing aids.

My experience is that the microphone in the Intent 1 is not that good. I hear the caller very well but they may find that I come in at too low a volume. I don’t think there is an adjustment for that.

Someone needs to develop an accessory mic, a good noise canceling mic for calls that can easily be used with hearing aids for better audio transmission back to the other caller.

I have the Samsung S23 phone and INTENT1 aids. I have full hands free calls and no one complains about mto me about issues hearing me. I mostly use it when driving and my phone is normally in my jesns pocket.

In the car, background noise for the mics may not been that bad. While the mics on Sirius platform might be a little better than the prior Polaris R and Polaris platform, they are not as good at filtering background noise as something like Airpods. Try taking a call in a noisy environment and ask what the person on the other end hears.

In a noisy environment my hearing is bad enough that i won’t be able to understand the other person even though I have great hearing aids

If you triple click the side button on your phone it should bring up an accessibility shortcut. If you select your hearing aids there should be a “Mic Input” option that is off or on, and make sure it is on. Something to be aware of is that it is not both hearing aid mics picking up your voice, but just the one that the phone is connecting to strongest at that time.
