Oticon Connect Clip compaibility

Hello,

I understand that Connect Clip (Oticon) is used to connect the Oticon hearing aids to Android and PC (mine are More 1).
But I am still not 100% sure, as I can’t read anywhere that I am free to use any android 12 device to connect to them!
(there is a small list that doesn’t list my phone… includes maybe 10 Xiaomi devices… some older than my device… but that is for non Connect Clip… I however want to use the Connect Clip… I assume it generally works with any android device in general?)
My device is Redmi Note 11 Pro Max 5g. It has Android 12 on it.

I would assume any device that supports Bluetooth classic.

The technical data sheet of Oticon Connect Clip indicates:

Bluetooth compliance:
Version 4.2 + EDR

Bluetooth profile support:
Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) 1.3
Headset Profile (HSP) 1.2
Hands-Free Profile (HFP) 1.6 including support for Wideband Speech

Anywhere you can use “normal” (classic) Bluetooth audio. That means pretty much any phone, any computer.

The most important part is does you phone connect to the More 1 using the Oticon ON app? If so, you should be good to go. My phone is not on the list, but it does connect to the More 1 with the app.

Do you have to use the App to connect the More to your phone?

I have the Oticon Xceed and don’t need the App to connect HAs to phone.

One would wish that is true but if the bluetooth source is not compliant with everything the ConnectClip expects, it may not work (reliably). Early on, Oticon (in the US at least) provided a Sennheiser (now EPOS in the US) BTD 800 USB Bluetooth dongle with the ConnectClip in order to get around incompatibilities in the Bluetooth implementation of computers. I had to use one with an iMac Pro and Oticon Technical support suggested that the dongle be used on any desktop computer as many had bluetooth issues that prevented stable and reliable use of the ConnectClip. They said that most laptops had better Bluetooth implementations and it wasn’t needed as often. I have no idea about phones as I’ve used an iPhone that connects directly with my OPN/OPN S/ More aids without using the ConnectClip

Of interest, EPOS provides that same dongle (or an equivalent USB-C version) with their high end headphones/headsets that use bluetooth. Jabra has a similar device for their high end headphones/headsets.

I did find this in an Oticon White Paper about the ConnectClip from 2019:

  1. Which computers can be used with the ConnectClip? We recommend using a BTD 800 USB dongle for the most stable connection with the ConnectClip.

I have no idea if that is still the recommendation but I do use it to prevent dropouts when streaming from my iMac to my More 1 aids via my ConnectClip. Note that I also had the firmware of the ConnectClip updated by my provider as another possible fix for the issues I used to have.

I hope that when Bluetooth 5.3 rolls out in phones and computers and hearing aids that things will “just work” but I certainly don’t expect that to be true. I expect that there will be many buggy and/or incomplete implementations of 5.3 and the codec and other stuff so things will be a bit frustrating for a while. Hopefully issues will be fixable by updated firmware.

I have Redmi Note 10 (Android 12) and can confirm that Oticon ConnectClip works with the Redmi Phone and also with Xiaomi Mi9 Phone from my partner.

  1. Enable Pairing on ConnectClip:
    Place ConnectClip in pairing mode.
  • Press and hold the Multi-button AND Volume UP button for about 6 seconds until the Status indicator LED is blinking BLUE.
The ConnectClip will stay in pairing mode for about 3 minutes.
  1. Enable pairing on your mobile phone
Go to > Settings > Bluetooth section.
Turn on Bluetooth. Search for devices and select “ConnectClip” to pair with ConnectClip.

  2. Pairing completed with mobile phone if ConnectClip indicated by STEADY BLUE status LED
