I went from domes to ear molds with my new HAs.
What I noticed is the same thing that you see.The problem comes in when your hearing loss deteriorates and the domes no longer are sufficient. If you have 100 or 105 DB speakers, then domes are required - at least for my Oticon Intents they are. As my hearing worsened, I needed closed domes.Now it is profound loss and I have 105db speakers and ear molds. Open domes would be OK for minimal to moderate loss. Closed would be more appropriate for moderate to severe. But, molds are necessary for profound. One problem with mt molds, they won’t stay in and they remolded them. Now the right one stays put, but the left one falls out. I am going back for new left made with different material tomorrow. Hopefully, that works.
Best thing for you to do if your hearing loss is not profound it to get a variety of domes and try them out. Your Audi shouldn’t have an issue with that, domes are cheap and are easy to change.
If you have a Costco nearby, I would recommend trying out the Costco Jabra at $1600/pair. They exactly the same as the Resound Nexus 1 (top of the line) for significantly less.
The Audis are pretty knowledgeable and they aim to please. I used them for a long while till I found out I could get them from the VA for the price of a visit.
@Bimodal_user Thanks for the document
Hi everyone, I’m back again.
I’m getting more comfortable with my hearing aids and have finally decided to buy the Philips 9050 from Costco. Now, I have some doubts about the receiver power and whether to choose open domes or vented molds. I’ve seen three different audiologists, and they all recommended open domes and an 85 receiver. However, before my next appointment, I want to be sure the audi is giving me the right choice.
Based on my audiogram and my limited knowledge, I feel that a 100 receiver with a mold and 3mm vents might suit my needs better.
Could you please give me your advice, @Um_bongo and @Neville ? Should I go for the 85 or 100 receiver? And would open domes or a vented mold be better? Closed domes aren’t an option due to occlusion—I’ve already tried that.
Thank you for your knowledge and patience!
85dB, there’ll likely be too much noise on the 100dB receiver in the low frequency.
Plus you’ll probably want a bit of frequency transposition from the top octaves too.
Might be a bit awkward to get a really good fitting; given the jump 2-6KHz, there’s a good chance of a bit of the downward spread of masking. Gain averaging in the fitting formula could also make the actual prescription hard to hit.
Thank you so much for your words,
That is some article. Good read. Thanks.
Glad to see it is useful.
I accidentally removed my post. Here are this copy:
@pcm71, I recommend to read:

@Bimodal_user I’ve already read it, thanks
I know. I accidentally deleted that post, so I write it again for future users.
So I tried the Philips 9050 for two months. Was fitted with medium power dome left ear and single vent right. Both would slip down my ear canal and ruin my sound quality. I switched to the large of each and the left power dome hurt my ear so I changed to large single vent . Better. Still not happy so I switched to Jabra Pro 20’s. Better sound and app is amazing with program and “favorite “ additions. (I have six set for various situations). I was fitted with small power domes both sides and sound was good and consistent. But not great. Changed to my large single vent from Philips and quality better except for streaming Spotify. Last change is to original med power domes from Philips and OMG.! Turned down volume on streaming and environment hearing by 25-30% and clarity is amazing. My take for what it’s worth: Philips rie wire was too short for my ears and their 9050’s are inferior to the Jabra aids for crisp and pure sound. The Jabra wires fit better and I changed back to the medium power domes from Philips which fit my canals better and sealed further up the canal. For me- fit perfection! Don’t give up. The domes are interchangeable mfg to mfg. size matters and length of the rie wire is paramount for a proper fit.
Based on your audiogram you should be using custom molds. I do not know why you were given open domes in the first place.
