Mute on Phonak Audeo Paradise P90

Noise canceling usually works by sampling the sound, reversing the phase of the electrical signals and feeding the reversed signals back so as to cancel the unwanted sounds. The microphones have to be on for this to happen.

On airplanes the ambient noise is so loud, that it makes it hard to hear the bluetooth audio from my laptop. If I mute the microphones, will that cut the ambient noise but not the bluetooth audio?

I believe the mute function on the aids literally mutes them.

While streaming you can adjust ambient/streaming sound if the aids are set up that way in the Target software by using the volume toggle switch on the aids.

You have 3 options to choose from, your fitter can set these using his software (Target):
When streaming:

  1. Default: your aid’s volume button (up/down) are used to mix the loudness. More of ambient sound or more of streaming source sound. Up -> Streaming is louder. Down -> ambient sound is louder.
I found this not satisfiyng, since the ambient sound cannot be switched off completly. And if I want to mute the mics it causes to increase the loudness of the streaming sound.
    Or
  2. Disable the mics when streaming. (in Target-SW: Fine tuning, Autosense, streaming program options). This cuts the ambient sound completely off, up/down buttons change the loudness of the streaming source
    Or
  3. Long press button down to mute/unmute ambient sound. (in Target-SW: Device Options)
Muted: This cuts the ambient sound completely off, up/down buttons change the loudness of the streaming source.
Unmuted: up/down buttons change the loudness of both ambient and streaming simuntaneously

For phone calls with your mobile the HA’s microphones are always ON. But again, you here no ambient noise.

And no, this has nothing to do with noise cancelling. It only mixes the microphones signal to the output signal as it is set in the options. If you have an open dome fitting, the effect will be less. Since the ambient noise bypasses the HA.

Edit: I double checked it in Target, and made some ammendments.

Need some clarification here. I have the Paradise UP Naida and had the audiologist provide me with a mute button, but when switching, it still seem like I’m hearing something. Unlike when I open the battery door.

That’s correct, it’s not muted completely. But in my opinion, it’s just about right.

Thanks, but what is exactly turned on? (from a technical standpoint)?

I’m not sure I understand your question. I try my best to answer:

  • When streaming: mute reduces the environmental sound (mics), while the streaming sound is kept at the same level.
  • when not streaming: mute reduces the environmental sound (mics)

Does this answer your question?

I understand the streaming point, but when not streaming, I somethings want to just have my “god given” mute on, without opening up the battery compartment. With the Paradise, when I select mute, it is different from opening the battery. There seem to be a slight sound.

Ok. To mute you need to long-press button down on one of the HA. There is no confirmation tone, but the environmental sound is reduced significantly. This has to be activated by your fitter in his Target-SW.
I think, it’s just about right to have a quiet relax-time.

Thanks, that exactly how I have it setup and you pointed out that the environmental sound is significantly reduce, but not turned off. Technically, I don’t count this as Mute, but ok.

I’m now wondering if mute on my Phonak’s actually mutes 100% of sounds. It sounds like I can’t hear anything. I wear Phonak V70.

Yeah, mine are also almost completely mute. I need to scratch the mics to confirm the mics are not off.
I did also double-check in Target. There is no possibility to set the volume for the muted option.

I had the same aids before (V90) and they were completely mute. These paradise P70 are different, there definitely a slight some sound coming through.

Oh that’s interesting. I wonder why the difference in later technology?

Don’t think the paradise have a mute. So my audi did what was suggested previously. Set up a program and turn it way down. It servers its purpose, which pretty much was remove my aids without feedback. Which a lot of people seem to find annoying.

In some of the programs you have a mix screen when you tap on the lower right corner. You can mix between the surrounding sounds and the source. I’m listening to my Roger On right now. This is that screen for me right now:

Perhaps have no input form your source and put it on the max, so you get nothing from surroundings?

If you can run the app, there’s a mute button in the lower left corner of the top page. As far as I can tell, it turns sounds from the mic way down (whether or not streaming) but I’m not sure about completely off.

I just tried that Mute button while streaming from my Android tablet, and as far as I could tell it killed the microphone sound completely.

BTW, double-tapping my right ear actually pauses YouTube videos: it doesn’t just kill the sound.

The only time I hear sound on mute is if I rub the microphone with my fingers. And even that is very faint.
