Looking to chat with anyone using Resound hearing aids with M&RIE

Hi. I am totally blind and looking to check out the Resound HA’s with M&RI’s. I believe orientating the mics in this way using my natural ear shape, the Pinna etc will give me far more audio localisation and awareness in 3d as to where objects are. I experienced this when using the Phonak Lyric aids before as they fit deep into my ear. Obviously having no sight means awareness of exactly where sound is coming from is very important to me and I don’t really get this with a regular RIC because of where the mics are placed.
I’m having trouble locating reviews of opinions of people using Resound M&RI’s however and am looking to chat to anyone with experience.
some questions I have to start with:
How do the HA’s sound in general? musical, warm, metallic, processed, natural etc?
What does the app allow you to control, EQ, programs, adjustments of volume, noise reduction etc?
can you alter the balance between the M&RI’s and the over the ear RIC mics or does an audi have to do this for you?
Is there a difference in sound quality between the mics in the RIC portion as compared to the ones in your ears?
Have you noticed a benefit in using M&RI’s or not?
How big are the M&RI’s compared to regular receivers, are they harder to get in your ears?

Please feel free to private message me if you’d be more comfortable.
Thanks.

Hi,

I’m wearing the same hearing aids but because I bought them from Costco they were much less expensive. I have the M&RIE microphones. Prior to getting my prescription hearing aids, I tried out Apple’s AirPod Pro 2s as hearing aids. One of the things I didn’t like about them is that they occlude the ear canals completely which made me very uncomfortable. I wanted the Jabra Enhanced Pro 20, which is made by GN and are the same as the ReSound hearing aids.

These are my first hearing aids so I have nothing to compare. It takes a while to get your brain trained because sounds will be different.

  1. If you want to listen to music that’s streaming through your hearing aids, you will be disappointed in the quality. If you think about it for a minute, you are trying to play music through a speaker in your ear canal. However, by playing around with the app tone controls it’s possible.

  2. Things don’t sound the same as your normal hearing. Understanding speech is what’s best about them. Hearing a conversation in a noisy environment is okay. On problem you may have is using the phone app to control many of the features because of your blindness.

  3. Since these are the only hearing aids I have ever worn, I can’t comment on the difference between having microphones in the ear canals verses not. The hearing aids still have two microphones on the part behind your ear.

One reason I went to Costco, besides the low price $1,599, but additionally they have a six month, money back trial period. If you don’t like them, they will either swap out your current choice for another of their three brands, or refund your money.

Good luck!

Hi. Thanks fore this. How much control does the app give you? can youf for example alter the balance between the M&RI mics and the over ear mics on the RIC units? can you change EQ etc and do you find it to be effective?

No, you can’t control the microphones in your ears. I think the app card. “Hear in Noise”, will control the microphones on the hearing aids.it has an automatic function, but your hearing aid specialist can restore the microphone focus from narrow to medium. This works better in restaurants in suppressing noisy environments.

Hearing aids will not restore natural hearing awareness. They are an aid in allowing you to hear speech better. I’m still playing around with the app to see which functions work well in which environments. Hearing aids need to be tested in noisy and loud environments where we live and not in an audiologist’s office.

I noted that the Sharkey Edge AI is available in an ITE format as well as the RIC. Would ITE help in your case?

Hello, M&Rie are a choice only if your hearing loss is not progressive by more than 20dB per octave.

I tried M&RIE on my Jabra EP 10s (like Omnia 9s), and I didn’t like them.

How do the HA’s sound in general? musical, warm, metallic, processed, natural etc?
Processed, fuzzy (sounds didn’t start and stop in a natural way)

What does the app allow you to control, EQ, programs, adjustments of volume, noise reduction etc?
I can adjust ‘bass’, mids, ‘treble’ up or down 6 notches, but I don’t know how that translates to decibels. I also have some control over general noise and wind noise suppression.

can you alter the balance between the M&RI’s and the over the ear RIC mics or does an audi have to do this for you?
I didn’t see any capability in the app to do that.

Is there a difference in sound quality between the mics in the RIC portion as compared to the ones in your ears?
The M&RIE mics are in the ear canal; the regular ones are ob the body of the external part of the HA. I couldn’t figure out what my problem with the M&RIEs was - maybe I was hearing both mics with delay from one of them.

Have you noticed a benefit in using M&RI’s or not?
I hoped for benefits listening to my hi-fi, and what I call the ‘fuzziness’ interfered with listening to music.

How big are the M&RI’s compared to regular receivers, are they harder to get in your ears?
I’d say the M&RIE receivers are significantly longer. I found them harder to insert, and they slid out in use more quickly than regular receivers.

I think what my audi said is crucial: 9 out of 10 of her clients that tried M&RIEs disliked them, but 1 out of 10 loved them. If you’re a ReSound customer, they’re worth trying out. You may be a person who really benefits from M&RIEs.

If you can get to a Costco, I strongly recommend going and checking out the Jabras. You get the 180 day refund window, and I tried the M&RIEs at no extra charge. I don’t know if a private practitioner can afford to allow clients to try out features for free.

That is a shame you felt the sound was fuzzy. I have a sharp bend in my left ear canal so I think it will be a pain sticking an M&RI in there unless I get a custom mold for it. my hearing loss is around 40 DB in some areas also so we might get feedback issues. Yes I do wonder if there is a delay between the M&RI and the mics on the RIC, I thought that might be the case. It seems like a recipe for disaster TBH having that many mics happening at the same time. I have heard some cut in and out depending on the situation but a shame you had a bad experience with it.

I tried using the M&RIE but ran into a problem that Costco could not resolve. I frequently go into places that are loud so the microphones would cut off as expected. The problem was they wouldn’t come back on afterwards. At first they would cut out for a short time but then it became longer like weeks at a time. I went back to Costco 4 times and eventually switched to regular receivers and the problem went away.
