My son who is 23 went to the audiologist and they said there is a tip stuck deep in his canal. She said she could not remove it because it was past the bend. What would you recommend?
@paul.d.dokken: Welcome to the Forum! Sorry it’s on a distressing note.
Seems like a trip to the emergency room is in order, or an office visit to the ENT specialist. How long has it been in there?
I am probably going to get my hand slapped by members here but get yourself a flashlight and pull your sons earlobe down and back. Don’t be afraid to pull on his ear to see deep into the ear canal. Can you see the dome? If you can and you are very careful you should be able to get the dome out with a set of curved hemostats. If for any reason you are nervous, make the appointment with your ENT. Don’t take chances you are not fit to do.
It’s not an emergency, the dome is not going anywhere.
Good luck
True anecdote: If there is excessive ear hair impeding your view, carefully TRIM the hair away so you can see.
DO NOT, under any circumstances, try to SINGE the hairs off. The hairs + ear wax catch fire and burn like tiny Molotov cocktails, inflicting a nasty burn!
Go to th er. Why screw around with this. But if you live in one of those states where an emergency room visit is an 8 hour ordeal call your Dr
This happened to me during a resort vacation in the Dominican Republic. Between my husband and his sister, they did as @Raudrive suggested. This took place poolside, I can only imagine what fellow guests were thinking. But it was successful. However, it sounds like this young man needed professional help. I hope all is resolved.
I still find that sometimes a vacuum seems to form in the ear canal and I am very careful removing the hearing aid if I encounter resistance. I also wonder if the tips get a bit soft and loose after a time. My dispenser only doles out a few extras at a time, so my tendency is to make them last, perhaps at my peril.
This has happened so many times to me, the last two times I got the dome out myself. The other times my son-in-law did. I guess it depends on how deep it is.
Had filter drop deep inside ear. Audiologist used luke warm water poured into ear and it floated out. The filters kept falling out ear piece had to be replaced. no more problem.
That’s a pretty expensive er trip for that unless it is causing a complication.
If it were just sitting there in my ear, I’d go to ent or primary care.
Walk-in clinics seem to have better hours and you probably won’t even see a doctor so it won’t be too expensive. He can call his doc and talk with a nurse for recommendations or suggestions.
It happens when you aren’t obsessive about seating the dome when changing. Happened to my BIL, he went to the ER, they took it out and also the one that was stuck in behind it - had been there for some time. He hears much better now!
Happened to me in the past. The nurse at CVS MinuteClinic removed for me.
