Heading to Costco (2023)

Are you changing the wax guards appropriately?

Some people produce more wax so need to change then as regularly as every 2 days.

Thanks for the reply

Sorry, I don’t understand what the HA wax guards have to do with impacted ear wax. I thought they protect the hearing aid.

I always clean the domes with tissue before inserting

I am visualizing wax in my ears getting pushed down the canal by the domes.

I haven’t worn my HAs for two weeks now since the microphones failed.

@japple

Sorry your first post said one hearing aid has broken.

Then I read your last post as the culprit was wax.

My mistake.

Makes sense.

I edited the last post

It was just a frustrating moment seeing all that wax in my ear canal.

And now I have to go to a doctor to get the wax removed before I can schedule another hearing test.

Thus delaying the HA purchase

Since you got good mileage from your trax42s i would start with their Rexton model…

Lots of suggestions on this discussion board about ways to clean out your ears. Personally, I find that HAs are a big contributor to wax buildup. Many people need to adopt a habit of cleaning them regularly–for me, that means drops of hydrogen peroxide (half and half w/ alcohol), allowed to percolate, followed by flushing with water using a bulb syringe.

My loaners are:

Jabra Enhance Pro PM 8 (PM862-DRW). Size 13 battery.

The Jabra with 13 battery was quoted at $1800. I don’t know if that is a 10 or an 8

Jabra Enhance Pro PM 10 is listed on their website. Rechargeable. $1700

Should I be hung up on PM 8 vs PM 10 - is PM 8 an older model?

I believe the 10 is equivalent to the Resound Omnia, their latest flagship model. I would guess the 8 was the Resound One but I had never seen the number designation for that before. I thought it was just the Enhance Pro.

Interesting (to me) observation with the loaner pair

They use a size 13 battery that was installed on Sunday March 12. They haven’t died yet.

Typical?

My several year old ReSounds (ie, now Jabra) get 10-14 days from a battery. I open the battery compartment all the way (air to the battery) and in a dri-box at night. Ekes out a few more days per, they say.

I had the same delay in testing due to earwax. I’ve been turning my head in the shower for a few seconds each way to get water in each ear, and move my jaw around. Then swab out the moisture about 5 minutes later before I put in my HAs. I won’t know if that’s working until my next appointment, but I don’t see any wax on the filters, and I do feel as if there’s moisture being shed when I don’t have the HAs in. And my hearing seems the same.

My Costco fitter recommended the Philips 9030, and I’m very happy with them. I also read an audiologist on reddit saying they are among the more reliable brands.

I asked about buying a dryer, and he said not to get it for my rechargeable 9030. He explained that the dryer only serves a purpose for replaceable battery units, because they have openings where moisture can get in, and moisture can be bad for the sensitive electronics.

I’m paranoid now about wax build up. Never had that issue before. Cost me $167 to get my ears cleaned.

I think I’ll be going with the Jabra’s. I half think they recommended that because they were the most expensive of the 3 options at Costco (I think).

I bought a passive drier - one of those containers with the foam pad. I had one for my last set but didn’t really use it too often.

Hoping all goes well tomorrow night.

My fitter suggested occasionally putting in some earwax softening drops, like Debrox.

I’m just lazy and haven’t done that much because it takes lying on my side for about 5 minutes, then putting in an earplug so the liquid doesn’t ooze out of my ear. The earplug also means that it’s best done at bedtime when I won’t be wearing my HAs.

My reasoning for thinking the water immersion into the canals would help was due to once being diagnosed by my GP of needing to have my wax removed, then procrastinating about 9 months, and then the earwax professional found no earwax. What transpired across that time was a lot of ocean swimming. So maybe water immersion softened the wax? Who knows.

Testing done. Failed the test with flying colors. As expected. Took up almost the whole time and then it was rushed to order the HAs. And as I was leaving I realized I didn’t get the results. But I saw them on screen. Similar to last time except both ears had symmetrical loss - perfectly overlaid.

Went with the rechargeable Jabra. The Costco notes said that the battery version was no longer going to be available as of December 2023 so I didn’t want to take any chances on getting an older model and it wasn’t obvious if the battery version was a Pro 10 or an earlier model like the loaners which were Pro 8.

Recommended closed domes and I requested a shorter receiver wire and longer ear locks.

I’ll be sure to get extra domes and wax guards and go over the replacement. Should be similar to the Trax 42 from what I’ve seen so far.

Submitted my claim to insurance so we will see how much they actually cover since I got conflicting information from two different reps but different timeframes. Specifically whether Deductible vs No deductible, but should be 70% covered for a certain amount. Maybe the policy changed from one year to the next and there is no deductible now.

Pickup April 6.

Just wrapping up my thread so when I come back in x years I can remember.

The appointments were definitely not long enough at 75 minutes and I even got two appointments since my ears were filled with too much wax at the first one.

The fitting for Jabra Pro rechargeable went well but again crunched for time at 60 minutes.

REM was performed at fitting and I was told it is a requirement by Costco. Specialists are graded based on how they set up the HAs.

We went with closed domes, experienced user non-linear. I think I got the largest domes at size 10.

There is another follow up appointment in 4 weeks.

I wanted to get the extra domes and wax guards at the fitting but was told to wait for the next appointment.

At this point, even though it’s only a few days, I can’t imagine asking for any adjustments.

I can hear the tv so much better. I thought my center channel speaker was dying but I knew better. Yep, it’s my bad hearing.

I’m hearing house sounds more frequently and we are in an area with strong winds. Of course my first night wearing these and we had high winds. I expect some of the sounds to fade into the background but for now it does startle me.

Outside I can hear the neighbors kids talking in their yard - which never happened before.

So I think this is a success already.

Happy for your positive feedback.I made my trip to Costco yesterday for replacements to my K7s. I didn’t know what to expect, but I had narrowed it down to the Jabra Enhance Pro 10 and the Philips 9030. After my hearing exam, I tested the 9030s for about a half hour or so. I walked around the store with my wife who speaks very softly. and was able to hear every word she said. She suggested that we go into the produce room with fans blowing loudly which is a big fail point with my K7s. Again, I heard every word. It was amazing!

I went back and trialed the Jabra’s excited to repeat the experience. Unfortunately, the sound although better than my K7s was not as good as the 9030s. I had to have her repeat things numerous times. Needless to say, that made my decision pretty easy.

I returned and told the HIS that I wanted to purchase the 9030s. He said that they just got the 9040s and were selling those now. So to make a longer story shorter, My 9040s are due in two weeks!!!

Be sure and tell us about the 9040 aids.

Wrong thread for this.

Heading back on Saturday for a follow up. I’ve had the Jabra 10 for 4 weeks now.

My only complaint so far is that sometimes it seems like the HAs aren’t really working. Things go quiet and I feel that occlusion since I have closed domes. Not sure how else to describe it.

When they are working all is good. I can hear my tv speakers for the first time in years.

I’ve been using All around program and notice that the noise reduction is set to automatic

And the insurance seems like they are going to cover 70% so that is a win
