Good alternative to Ear Gear

I’m looking for a good alternative to Ear Gear, to secure my KS10s while I’m travelling. Not keen on the idea of them being covered with little socks or sleeves. Can anyone on the forum recommend some other type device that will fit my aids? Thanks.

My friend likes these ones. The only issue is, your KS10s might be too small for the loops?

Incredible. Thanks I’ll find out more…

Thankyou Zebras, I will contact the seller and ask if they will fit my KS10’s. If they don’t, they should be Ok for my NHS Resounds, which I will be taking for backup.

I didn’t think I’d like the EarGear things, but they do a good job keeping dust and water off the aids when working outside.

Downside is they don’t seem to be very well-made. The spandex covering on one of my elastic tethers lasted one day before it unravelled. They replaced it promptly, though.

[*Addendum: VAC :canada: also provided me with a pair of Oticon brand tethers. No sock - just heavy duty silicone O-rings attached to sturdy tethers and a clip. I like it because it’s simple, but, I have to give EarGears the nod when it comes to keeping dust and debris out of the microphones.]

If you are seeking a way to moisture protect your hearing aids, my solution after purchasing and then tossing the Ear Gear “socks” has been simple cheap scotch tape. Amazon Basics sells 6 rolls for very little providing a year’s supply.
I get the cheapest available so there is no tape residue and it sticks to itself quite well.

  1. Depending on the size of your HAs, start with 2.5 to 3.0 inches of a straight tear piece of scotch-type tape. Note: I use my finger as a consistent measurement guide for the tape length.

  2. Fold just the very tip onto itself to create a small tab for removal ease.

  3. Begin covering the top of the HA at the wire end wrapping the tape around the wider battery end and back to the underneath portion and the wire.

  4. Fold the top down first then bring the bottom up to meet the top. Fold the flaps at the battery end to seal the unit.

This has proven a life saver 2X as I forgot to remove my HAs in the shower.
The tape allows sound through while keeping water out.
I keep a plastic tape dispenser in my travel bag for trips.

Used to work for 3M but that was long ago.

adhesive transfer. Electrical tape was terrible for it. Be careful, no matter what tape you use.

Way back almost all of their tapes had adhesive that was solvent based. When I left they were changing to water based adhesive. I have no idea what they do now.

Thank you. I’m looking to secure my aids during various sailing trips in Vietnam, in case of strong winds. Although I think it will be very humid, so I probably will also require moisture protection.

Scott, Many thanks for the pics> I had read your post before you had uploaded them, so I was a little confused, now all is clear.

I wear the More1 MiniRite aids with full skeleton ear molds, I haven’t had any issues with my aids falling off, even with wear face mask or my motorcycle helmet.

Hi cvkemp, I don’t have moulds, but had endless problems with face masks, the elasticated retainers always seemed to get caught in the receiver wires, when removing the mask.

I understand back in 2010 I had MiniRite aids with domes and I hated them, I lived in Central Texas and the wind would blow my aids off me. I begged for ear molds and never got them, a different VA clinic and different audiologists. Now domes will not work for my hearing loss. And I don’t believed that domes worked for me back then.

Just want to point out that directional microphones on hearing aids work off of the difference in sound reaching the two microphones. So, an uncalibrated modification like this may completely disrupt directionality.

Yes, I see your point x475aws. That would apply to any sort of covering, including Ear Gear.

I bought a package of plastic things to put under a facemask to keep the mask off my nose/mouth. It came with a dozen little plastic S-hooks which grab the loops of the mask behind your head and the mask isn’t grabbing you behind your ears. Just don’t forget them and throw them out with the mask.

The order I bought on amazon isn’t available any longer. But the hooks are kinda like these: 10 Pack of Ear Saver Clips for Face Mask

There are a lot of options, though!

Sound travels through the thin cheap tape – for me – just fine. I stress cheap because it is thinner with less adhesive to avoid sticky residue on HAs.

I can adjust the directionality front-rear-omni through THRIVE app with no problems on my Starkey Livioedge AI RIC 312.

Excellent!

Try searching for “mask extenders” there. See if the help. I see staff in hospitals where scrub hats with buttons sewed on. Large buttons. And fastening straps to them.
