He may be blocking his ears with earplugs to avoid damage from loud noises in his work in construction or demolition, for example, while wearing the bone conduction headphones to listen to music at normal volume via bluetooth.
Iām recommending this to my son for that exact reason. He works for a cleaning company. His vaccum is powered by a 24 hp diesel engine. It makes a little noise. All of his machines seem to make a log of noise! But he likes listening to audio books. He has been wearing big over ear sound deadening blue tooth head sets.

Shokz OpenComm headset: does the portion that sits behind the ear physically interfere with RIC hearing aids? Iām thinking specifically of the Widex Moment sRIC R D.
I believe the bone conduction has the same impact on hearing loss as regular air headphones. I have made review of the headphones and listed a study highlighting that fact. It is listed in the description of the video: https://youtu.be/fUL0NubxpeY
I just bought the Shokz Open Run Pro. Seems good and I can hear traffic while I run.
They are an ideal choice. I noticed Nick mentioned micro-zaps on the skin (thatās the vibration of higher volume) and the Aeropex was not good enough on that point indeed. Within the bone-conducting headphones I have tried I found Nank pretty good. They are not as popular as Shokz or aftershokz I think but does have a fair enough quality. Relatively good audio quality in bone conduction headphones, while Mojawaās is bizarreā¦Happy with the purchase. I also use them for swimming. Nice choice for sports lovers as well.

Iāve been using Shokz for years, initially on my daily commute when cycling to the station in my local town (OpenRun, now OpenRunPro after a bit of a mistake when packing my suitcase) and since the start of the pandemic for all teams calls (OpenComm, the ones with the mic boom).
They provide surprisingly good sound and have all day (plus some) battery life. They are comfortable and happily sit over the top of my glasses and my new Phonak Lumity hearing aids.
Iāve only just started wearing hearing aids as 4 weeks ago I lost most hearing in my left ear (an infection I think), but my right ear is mostly fine with just a very small amount of age related (and running a night club and concernts) normal hearing loss, so 6+ years (much longer but I cannot remember how long) of bone conduction donāt seem to have had an impact.
The only thing is that they (obviously) donāt block any external noise so if you are on a busy road, plane or underground, the external noise will prevent you listening to audiobooks, podcasts and music.
Iāve recommended them to friends and many people at work have now bought them.
