I was a cochlear implant pioneer when I got my first in 1990 and sinc have had at least 5 processors. My last was when they had to replace the 30 yr old implant in my head a few years ago. My current complaint (which I hope someone can explain) is that I get a LOUD ROARING sound in my head (w/or without my processor on). It’s debilitating until it stops (usually 30-40 min.)
Q: HAS ANYONE ELSE EVER HAD THIS … and if so, what causes it and can it be fixed ???) TY, Sue
@SUES welcome to the forum. Did you have this sound with your old array? Or has it just started since you have had the new array implanted? How long ago was the new array implanted? Has the integrity of the new array been tested? What array and processor do you have?
To me it sounds like you have tinnittus. Your processor might need to be checked out is another thought I had, depending on how long ago you were reimplanted.
I also have tinnitus but mine doesn’t bother me until I remove my processor each night.
Also sugar can trigger tinnitus.
Good luck with this issue.
Welcome to the forum.
I too think it’s tinnitus. My reason is it happens with or without the processor on. Have you had more stress lately? Trouble sleeping? High blood pressure? Drugs? These types of things can trigger tinnitus.
Is your new processor volume set a higher than your old one was.? Too much volume has triggered raging tinnitus for me. The only way out of it was to lower the processor volume way down for a week or so. Then slowly increase the volume to prescribed setting.
Have you talked to your audiologist about this? Curious what they say.
Good luck with this.
Processor on or off, ~30 minutes. Migraine?
When it is started? Immediately after reimplantation or later? Does it is uni- or bilaterally? Is it associated with something particular, like high blood pressure, gloominess before the eyes, headache (migraine is also possible, as @Neville posted), etc.?
Do you have comorbidities like atrial fibrillation or carotid artery arteriosclerosis?
If it is unilaterally - does it coincides with poorer performance of overall hearing by CI (not only during roaring) or with vertigo/balance disturbance?
