Hi. New to HA’s. I have been wearing them 9 days so far. Normal everyday sounds seem really loud, to the point I have had to adjust the volume down in certain situations but I still struggle understanding speech at times. I knowI am still adjusting so I expect this will get better? I find them very uncomfortable, to the point that I have to remove them by the afternoon. I have very small ear canals and both the inside and outside hurt after removing them. I have the Jabra Enhance Pro 20 micro R RIC digital with the Jabra size 1, LP in both ears. I have been told by the audiologist at my ENT as well as the person at a Costco that I have mild to moderate hearing loss. Any help or advice is appreciated. I am not sure how to upload the picture of my audiogram.
You need to make some notes of everything that bothers you and any sounds that you struggle with. Take the notes with you when you return for an adjustment. Ask if you should be using smaller sized domes. I experienced all that you mentioned but after a couple of months everything was great. Just had to get used to the change of hearing again.
Hello, I’m about two months ahead of you wearing hearing aids, and I am also wearing the Jabra Enhanced Pro 20s. Yes, I also have a mild high frequency hearing loss. I have been most surprised at how loud is the sound of my cloths when putting on a jacket or a sweater that goes over my head. One surprise was that I can now hear the clicking sound on my computer keyboard at work. When they gave me the keyboard, I assumed it was amazingly quiet. It isn’t, but I couldn’t hear the clicking sound. The great part is that I can hear my wife’s conversations. Previously, I kept saying to her, “Speak up”, or, “Why are you mumbling?”. Also, she doesn’t ask me why I have the TV turned up so loud. I’m getting used to them.
I can hear my wife’s computer keyboard clicking away.
I am new to hearing aids too - picked them up 2 days ago . I cant where them for long as i get terrible headaches
Just trying 1 hour twice a day at the moment ? Is this long enough ?
A substantial part of adjusting to hearing aids is your brain relearning the sounds that have been missing. It doesn’t happen overnight. Take the advice about making notes about what drives you nuts, and ditto on the smaller domes suggestion. That alone will make a big difference in terms of comfort.
Think of it like learning to use a new muscle group or exercising for the 1st time in years. It will be uncomfortable and may hurt for the 1st few days or even weeks. The body is saying this is not normal this is not normal turn it off. It does get better though, humans and their brains are really good at adapting to things that aren’t “normal” Then you’ll find taking them out the body says where the hell has all the sound gone? a good example, when I wore a set a year or so ago it was after an operation. I lost a ton of hearing in my left ear and I had a sensation of fullness or pressure in that ear because the sound was no longer there. The brains weird way of coping with that. Anyway when I put the HA in, at 1st it was horrible, but then, after about 20 days, I’d take it out and my brain would scream at me arg, put it back the pressure has just returned. A few days after that the brain got good at coping with it in and out. The body is weird and clever, you just gotta trust it to work this through. This won’t help you at all but you’ll remember I said this when you get used to them, in that when you stop focusing and thinking about what you’re hearing, when you act on sound with pure instinct, you’ll find they become the norm for you. IN other words, right now you’re hearing all this stuff and going OMG what is that? what is that? that’s weird, that hurts etc. After a while though, the brain will just know that those sounds aren’t a threat to you and they’ll feel very natural.
Sorry that was a bit of a waffle but hopefully it helps a bit.
I’m just glad that my wife doesn’t say daily, “Turn down the TV, it’s blaring”.
Just hang in there, i have been wearing Ha’s 20 years now, every time I get a new set, the Audi may be tempted to up the volume according to the hearing test, so I suggest to go the other way, then later we can adjust the volume ans anything else that comes into mind, take lots of notes…Some adjust in no time some it takes months depends on each individual, if I take mine out all I hear is the whistling of my tinnitus and everything else is stone silence, patience, in the end you will be in a much better world, almost normal, most people (98%) don’t even notice that you’re wearing Ha’s…
