Your thoughts on used hearing aids

I checked in Target first to confirm that they still had warranty. Then I quoted the serial numbers to Phonak and they confirmed warranty coverage but did not mention anything else. I also quoted the serial numbers to a local audiologists office who also just confirmed the warranty coverage.

I never owned new hearing aids, all were used. My first experience with an audiologist was an eye opener about money. I went the DIY route.

I have bought probably a dozen pairs of used aids through the years at a huge savings, mostly off eBay. All we’re good transactions.

The trick is understanding what you are buying and asking the seller good questions.

The write up was brilliant. I am going the E bay way and hunt around for used HA then fine tuned locally. It is much cheaper than UK or USA. One day I will be there DIY!

Most of the aids I’ve had have been used ones from eBay. At this point in time I have Costco KS9’s as my “good” aids and a pair of Phonak M90’s as my “backup” aids that I got used on eBay. I use both sets pretty much interchangeably.

I do self programming. If that isn’t an option for you then you will most likely have to pay someone to program your aids. Some of the eBay sellers will program aids to your audiogram. I’ve never tried that so don’t know how well it works.

I feel pretty lucky that I found a set of M90’s that use batteries. I think the rechargeable ones have had problems. I don’t know how this applies to Oticon aids. If you get a pair of aids that have problems you’re going to be unhappy with your options.

I paid about $600 for my M90’s. New they would have been several thousand dollars so I thought the risk was worthwhile.

Can you share what the fix was? I haven’t had any problems, but it is always good to learn from others.

I recently got a pair of M50-13T’s that are working well. They were about $200. My M90-312T’s were about $600 and my KS9’s were about $1500. I’m considering selling my KS9’s since the other two sets are working well. It looks like the KS9’s are worth about $500 on eBay.
