Hi, I have a pair of bernafon viron 3 rechargeable h/aids.
Whenever I visit my audiologist she pushed the plastic dome very hard into my ear until it cant go any further.
I have been doing likewise when fitting but it is uncomfortable. More importantly my hearing has deteriorated slightly since adopting this practice. It might be a coincidence but being new to h/aids I dont want to make matters worse.
Please tell me whether it is usual practice not to push the plastic domes hard into the ear but to stop before hitting the drum.
Forgive this being a stupid question but I certainly dont want to exacerbate my hearing. thanks jack
The wire of the hearing aid, will only allow you to go so far so I wouldn’t worry too much.
The dome should be pushed in firmly. It won’t hit the ear drum. If they hurt, talk to your audiologist. They shouldn’t hurt.
This is one of the reasons why I use custom ear molds (moulds). Witjh a custom mold, the end of the mold tip is in exactly the same position every time. It can not be pushed in too far.
Dan
The domes should be pushed in firmly so they can’t go in any more. They won’t cause damage. This just proves there’s no such thing as a bad question. If something concerns you, ask
Hi Guys, Thank you all so much for your valuable advise. I have pulled the domes out a little and they are not only more comfortable but as suggested the sound quality is improved.
I appreciate your time and trouble. jack
One last note. If your pulling the domes out a bit and getting better sound then the domes don’t fit properly. That’s not how they’re supposed to work
Hi Hass, I take your point. I purchased the domes from my audiologist following her adjusting my h/aids. Should I return to her and suggest that she has sold me the wrong size or perhaps I can experiment with a couple of different sizes.
I certainly would. They should fit right. I don’t think she would be surprised
Many thanks for that Hass.
Remember domes come in different sizes. It’s not unusual to have to change them. You didn’t post your audiogram. I have a profound loss which means I wear custom made molds. I push them in all the way and they fit snug. That could also be a possible option if domes don’t fit but again I don’t know the severity of your loss or if molds are a viable option. Just don’t go in with an attitude like the audiologist screwed up. That won’t help. But they should go in all the way and not need to be pulled back a little. I can’t imagine that it feels comfortable wearing them after doing that.
I think how this is received by the audiologist depends on a variety of things. Some you have control over. I wouldn’t “tell her” she sold you the wrong size. However, mentioning the troubles you’re having and asking to try different sized domes or if she has any suggestions would likely be received better.
Hi Guys, thank you both very much for your advices which I shall follow. I dont have an audiogram.
When you see your audiologist about your domes ask for a copy of your audiogram. It should be no big deal
OK, will do, thanks.
I lost two domes inside my ear canals within a week after pushing the wires in as far as they would go, then rather casually pulling them out. The domes had been on the receivers for a while and may have loosened up or been a bit sticky in the canals from earwax. I am now doing a better job of keeping them clean, replacing with new ones, and making sure they are firmly attached before insertion. I would suggest being careful not to insert them too deeply and then yanking them out by the wires or you may be going to urgent care to get the tips removed.
Hi Piques, many thanks for the info. I had a dome come lose in my ear. I could have gone to the doctors who would charge me €50.00 to remove it but instead I squirted a little water in the ear and out popped the dome.
I had already purchased from amazon a rubber ear syringe for removing ear wax. Another saving on going to the doctors.
The syringe cost about €10.00 and will last indefinitely. I think pharmacists sell them but more expensive than amazon or Ebay
After reading all this thank God I have a custom ear mold
so what is the problem old chap.
