What's that inside ear hook and good idea to take it out? Pro and Con (Phonak Naida Paradise P70 UP)

There’s something inside ear hook that looks like white stuff. I assume it’s damped or filter according to Google search. Can you tell me why should I leave it alone or should I take it out? I was told that “damped” or “filter” can be common problem for blocking sound over time.

About sound quality, I do not notice any sound different between damped/filter and undamped/filter ear hook via my new hearing aid called Phonak Naida Paradise P70 UP.

But my old hearing aid called Phonak Naida B70 UP, I did notice small difference between them like little bit soft on damped/filter awhile undamped/filter was slightly sharp. I guess Phonak found solution to ensure that their new hearing aids line show that sound quality between them are equal to each other?

@kevels55 took his out. He has the Naida P90 UP Aids. Maybe he can chime in and say if he noticed any difference?

TBH…… I can’t say there was any noticeable difference with the damper in or out @Zebras & @jcrtorres007, After your advice, I took the damper out of both aids, as the right aid damper had swollen up, and sealed the ear hook completely, no sound whatsoever, so I removed them both until I got new ear hooks, I have now replaced the ear hooks, I got them from my A.uD, so all is back to normal…. Cheers Kev :wink:

Is there reason why you prefer damped/filter ear hook? Did your audiologist mention anything like why it’s important… Just curious because my previous two audiologists said no reason to have damped or filter inside since Target Software has undamped feature. Third audiologist said yes it’s important to have damped/filter ear hook because of moisture or something like that. I was like urgh about which one is smart move. Cheer to you and everyone. :+1:

@jcrtorres007

Moisture can go up and enter the hearing aid without the damper inside the ear hook to stop it.

Also Target software doesn’t allow you to select ear hook without and with damper in the ear hook now.

If you can’t notice any difference, why don’t you just keep it in?

Hello Zebras, Phonak Target does allow to select undamped or damped. I have no problem with damped but loss of some or tiny sound from damped ear hook which I don’t like.

I remember when I got my first Phonak Naida years ago. After sports playing often, I had to turn up more volume and I was like what’s going on then found out it’s blocked. Keep playing more, blocking getting increase. But you are right about moisture.

Oh I have Marcel and can’t select it. Never mind. At least you can select it.

Meant to say Marvel.

I just did not want moisture to be an issue, so I replaced the ear hooks with new ones, once my A.uD sent them out to me…. You have quite a profound hearing loss @jcrtorres007, I do empathise. I have read, removing the dampers can give you slightly more gain, but then moisture can be a big issue, and I now realise it is an issue for me, even though my aids go in the overnight drier. One other thing, I should mention, I am assuming you are looking for more gain, with your loss, I would understand why you might want to remove the dampers! I use, double walled tubing, specifically ( Pre-bent Double Heavy Tubing 53131-000/20) I believe this tubing can give you up to an extra 5db gain, so you may want to acquire some? All the best, cheers Kev :grin:

Well said. It’s exactly reason I removed damped because of better and more sound. When I had Oticon Xceed in the past, ear hook didn’t have damped inside and wondering why Phonak cannot do the same too.

@jcrtorres007, It will only to be for the obvious reasons that Phonak use the damper, namely moisture, as you are no doubt aware, it reeks havoc with electronics…… So, if you keep the dampers out, I would be inclined to put your aids in an overnight drier, every night! If you are struggling to get double walled tubing, let me know, send me a PM (Private Message) with your name & address, I will post you about 6 via airmail, I have some spare, but not many…. Cheers Kev :smile:
