The icon you are referring to is the “speech booster”. I’ve tested it, and I can sometimes notice a tiny difference in certain environments if I’m really concentrating, but the difference is so slight that I just ignore it. Re the “speech in noise” program - my advice would be to not give up on it and test it for a while. Initially I found that it just made everything louder and did not help with speech but as I use it more I think my brain is adapting to it a bit and it’s more useful. I also find that using closed domes is better than open domes for noisy environments and the “speech in noise” program is more effective with closed domes.
I use Speech-in-Noise in various situations, f.ex. when speaking with the checkout person in a supermarket. I lower the volume considerably and it works v. well for me. Focuses on what is in front of me and damps down the rest.
Where is this comfort setting you guys are talking about? I am trying out a pair of intent 2. I can’t find that setting in the companion app.
Got Intents 2 a month ago the initial set up was good but now that its been fine tuned ot has only improved the overall experience with them. The speech in noise in for me works excellent if I make it a bit softer its clarity improves a lot.
I’ve been experimenting with “speech in noise” setting more. I have found the tips to lower the volume on it to be helpful. I have been in some noisy places during the Dodger games and used it on low volume and heard the game as well as my table mates! At home, I have found that watching something like that with that setting helped hear the commentator well. I use the General mostly for most things.
Since you are well on your way to DIY excellence, try the Lecture program for TV.
Congrats on the Dodgers!
Classic Yankees vs Dodgers!
Should be a fun week! Enjoy. Thanks for your help!
Finally had a chance to fire up Genie2 and update my Intent settings.
There is no “Mic to Ambient” that I can find, but there is a slider for “M relative to phone”. Alas, that was already set to minimum.
I did a few other adjustments as per that whitepaper which should improve speech in noise, so fingers crossed.
My theory at the moment is that compared to Phonak, Oticon emphasizes audio accuracy (hence their rumored popularity among musicians), while Phonak is maybe a little more aggressive in pursuing speech clarity even if the result sounds more processed. When I was first getting fitted for HAs, I started with a pair of Oticons and really liked how they sounded, but even their smallest domes were uncomfortable. So my audiologist suggested Phonak, which had more comfortable domes but sounded less natural to me. Now I’m using Oticon again and I’m not sure which I prefer.
Hopefully today’s adjustments will be an improvement.
Have you considered custom molds? Most never go back to domes after getting molds, and with you high frequency loss, you’d probably benefit, and could have large enough venting to allow the lower frequencies to pass through.
That might get you off the fence!
That’s what I meant, but was going from memory.
For that setting , the default value is 2nd step from Louder on the right, or max.
I haven’t, but it’s an interesting suggestion. I always thought of those as a next step for more dramatic hearing loss. For now I’ll keep experimenting with settings since that’s easy and probably sufficient, at least until my next AD appt.
That’s what I figured, but thought I’d double-check and also share the exact text for anyone reading this thread who wants to try adjusting it themselves.
I also changed one of my programs to the pre-set “Speech In Noise” program. Haven’t actually tried it yet, but my audiologist had previously only setup the default program plus “My Music”.
This is key, select the Speech In Noise and rack down the volume a bit.
It really makes a difference as it stops you feeling so ‘overloaded’ with all the sound.
I have a question on the Oticon intent 1’s are there only 4 programs available… General, Speech in noise, Comfort, & Lecture?
I’m used to wearing Resound HA’s and they have quite a few more programs to test to see which ones you prefer and with their app you can adjust noise reduction , speech focus, and wind noise settings for different situations on each program… they also have a noise filter or speech clarify that you can turn on…
using the Oticon companion app is there a way to do that?
Nope. The Oticon HAs have no other programs beside programs for acustic-Phone and Telecoil. And the Oticon Companion app does not provide the features you listed and are avail. for the Resound/Jabra HAs
There are 4 standard program slots just like the Resound. Your audiologist populates these from a list. Unlike the Resound, the user customisable settings (levels/geofenced) aren’t saved either to the aids or the app, so when you reboot you lose the settings.
I don’t have the Intent’s but my Xceed’s have the Lecture program.
Pretty sure I have a Speech in Noise one as well.
Have they all disappeared with newer Intents?
With my Intents I have:
General
Speech in Noise
Comfort
MyMusic
TV Adapter / EduMic
Remote Mic 1
I don’t know what Lecture is.
I think it increases the soft sounds to hear further in front of you but I could be very wrong.
Closed domes are effective for me. . . “speech in noise” etc.
