USB Hi-Pro connected to Mac running Win 7 via VirtualBox?

I’m hoping to have the setup described in the thread title working. One thing that concerns me is that VirtualBox’s USB interface uses virtual USB drivers to talk to the Mac OS drivers which talk to the hardware. Meanwhile, Hi-Pro wants to install its own Windows driver. I’m wondering whether it will play with VirtualBox’s virtual driver. Anyone have any insight?

I just ordered the USB Hi-Pro yesterday from China, so I’ve got a while to fret about it.

brec, seems like you are committed to do self programming even if you will get local service. i might do the same but first i will let the dispenser do the job i have paid for. i am still reluctant to illegally use the programming software since i am not a dispenser. in addition, as a former software engineer i told myself i wouldn’t do that.

I’m happy, indeed hoping, to get at least an initial fitting, but I’d like to have self-programming capability for subsequent tweaking.

I downloaded fitting software from a manufacturer’s site, installed it, and didn’t encounter any indication that I was doing anything illegal. I didn’t do any hacking nor assent to any license agreement that would exclude my personal use.

i didn’t look at the license. i was told the license contains wording that specifically states the user agrees they are a licensed dispenser. you didn’t see this wording in the license.

I looked at mine. It says Veh w/GVWR <26000, N0 M/C ENDORSEMENTS: NONE RESTRICTIONS: NONE

From the Phonak Target license agreement (available in the Help menu):

You may not, at any time, during or after the Term of this License:

(a) use the Software to program, configure or otherwise process hearing aids that you have made or purchase or otherwise obtain from any entity other than Phonak;

(b) install or have the Software installed on any computer that is not used in the operation of your business;

© permit other Persons to use the Software, except your employees who are hearing care professionals who are trained in fitting hearing aids and competent to use the Software and who have undertaken to use the Software in accordance with the terms of this License Agreement;

thanks. i thought there was something but since i don’t have the phonak software now, i couldn’t. i downloaded it then deleted the download.

Yep, they are from Phonak.
Yep, my computer is for my business only.
And I told my wife not to mess with this!
Hahahaha.

You downloaded it!!

Did you empty your recycle bin after you deleted it? What if someone else comes along and restores it from your recycle bin and then uses it? I wonder if the original downloader still has liability in a case like this?

And even if you have removed it from the recycle bin, the original file is still intact on your harddrive until it is written over. So you may need to take steps to insure the downloaded file is unrecoverable.

OMG, What a frigging nightmare! :rolleyes:

I think you fellow need to invest in a VPN. :slight_smile: They are quite reasonable.

Back on topic. You might be a first to connect a Hi-Pro using VirtualBox. Sorry, I have never used VirtualBox, or a Mac.

I like to keep stuff like this isolated and separate from my normal PC stuff. I use things like disk image backups and a separate spare computer (two computers hooked up to one monitor). But that’s just me, YMMV.

pvc, i didn’t say YOU or anyone else shouldn’t self program. i am saying that i changed my mind about using software i was not authorized to use.

My apologies to you Gary. I was just having a little fun with this topic that keeps coming up over and over again. :wink:

no problem. i would really like to self program. i also wanted to know what was available to the dispenser. after reading all of the negative remarks about dispensers, i thought it might be useful.

That was a great movie! (The quoted line is an edited version of the one in the movie.)

I have an old Dell laptop, that’s got Windows XP on it, that might work if VirtualBox doesn’t.

I’ll admit I’m in near the border, but I think I’m safely on the right side of it. (a) IF Phonak intended only their authorized dispensers to use the software, they should get new lawyers to draft a license (see interspersed comments below); (b) the software is publicly accessible; (c) web seminars on using the software are publicly accessible; (c) Phonak’s general openness is a significant factor in why I’m a customer.

I purchased Phonak hearing aids from Connect Hearing, which, like Phonak, is a business brand of Sonova Holding AG;

(b) install or have the Software installed on any computer that is not used in the operation of your business;

The computer in question (in fact, the question which is the subject of this thread :slight_smile: ) is used in the operation of my business (see my remark re lawyers, above).

(c) permit other Persons to use the Software, except your employees who are hearing care professionals who are trained in fitting hearing aids and competent to use the Software and who have undertaken to use the Software in accordance with the terms of this License Agreement;
I’ll not permit any other persons to use the software, so any provided exceptions are irrelevant.

I’m not depriving Phonak of any revenue, directly or indirectly; on the contrary, were it not for the relative ease of self-programming access to these state-of-the-art HAs, I’d very likely be leaving Costco tomorrow with a pair of KS6s. I also note that I told the Connect employee who sold me the HAs that I intended to self-program; she was fine with the idea, and factored that into the initial fitting plan.

Everything works fine within Target 4.1 either standalone or via Hi-Pro USB or to the ComPilot Air II accessory via USB. The only thing that doesn’t work: any web link I click on within Target, such as to a product news page, or any Help menu choice that would open a web page, opens a blank Internet Explorer page. Nothing in the IE address (URL) field.

I can work around the problem if it’s a link by right-clicking it and choosing Copy shortcut, then pasting into an IE address bar. But I’m curious to see some of the info items that are in the Help menu.

Other internet use from the VirtualBox Win7 guest OS works fine, including downloading files within Target from Phonak servers, such as software updates.

Thoughts?

Although the thread is rather old (almost 3 years ago), I want to confirm that Target 5.2 and Hi-PRO USB are working fine within a Virtualbox 5.0 with Win 7 as guest and a Ubuntu 16.04 derivative (Mint 18.3). In linux as the host you have to explicitly add yourself to the group ‘vboxusers’ and double check that you are REALLY a member of that group (execute the command ‘id’ in a terminal). (This last step was the root cause for my longlasting failures).
