Unable to pair Bluetooth with one of my Phonak Audeo M90-R Hearing Aids

I have the Phonak Audeo M90-R. Yesterday I had them cleaned and the software updated by my audiologist. Today I could only hear my podcasts using Bluetooth in my right ear. So I figured I needed to unpair/repair them. So now when I try to repair them with Bluetooth on my iPhone, it only finds the Right one: ( R-Phonak hearing aid). Is there something the audiologist needs to do to correct this? This shouldn’t be that hard. I’ve done it many times before with no issues. I’ve followed all the directions for pairing/unpairing but nothing seems to work. Anyone else had this issue? Thanks!

Susan

Yeah, sounds like something went wrong during software changes on her end.

On mine when I go to bluetooth setting on my iPhone X it only shows that the Right aid is connected which is correct. I have also had some issues in the past similar to what you are discribing but they seemed to rectify themselves (see below) and it hasn’t happened again. My suggestion would be (if you haven’t already tried this) is to go into Bluetooth on your iphone and where it indicates - R-Phonak HearingAid - Connected - there is a little i in a circle - click on that and then click on Forget this Device. Try and repair again. That usually seems to solve the problem.

The R hearing aid (or whichever the “dominant” one is) is the only one that appears in the Bluetooth list on the phone. You get two additional BLE devices when you’ve registered them in the App, but these have nothing to do with hearing music.

If you can only hear music on the R, they may not be talking to each other. Here’s a quick and easy test to see if they’re disconnected from each other:

  1. Press the volume up and then the volume down button on the R hearing aid. You should hear chimes in both aids.

  2. Now press the volume up and then the volume down button on the L hearing aid. You should hear chimes in both aids.

If the R volume change only gives you chimes on the R, and the L volume change only gives you sound on the L, then they’re not connecting to each other. You don’t have to do anything in the app. Nothing with BT setup will affect this.

When it happens to me, I just put both back in the charging case, wait until they’re charging, and then pull out the R hearing aid first and pull out the L hearing aid second. This procedure shuts them off for charging and then powers them up in the right sequence. Sometimes you don’t need the sequence, it seems, but sometimes you do. Give it a try.

And if you still have the volume-change/chime on each ear only (not chiming both), then give that issue to your audi to get them reconnected to each other.

Thanks haggis. I tried your experiment and the two hearing aids do not appear to be connected to each other. I put them back in my charger and removed them in order you said. But they still only chime in one ear when adjusting the volume. Is connecting the 2 hearing aids something the audiologist has to do? I wonder if she forgot something when she updated the software. Thanks again. Susan

Can you adjust the volume of each aid independently?

If they are MFi, you may in fact see both listed separately, at least that’s what it said in an MFi document I read recently. Someone else can probably confirm or refute.

Phonak/Marvel are not MFI. Not at all.

Susan,

Yes, talk to your audi. The two aids must be connected to each other to function properly even as hearing aids. When you get this resolved, you’ll get your stereo Bluetooth as well.

Not in normal operation. In normal operation, when the two sides are connected, and by design, adjusting the volume buttons on either side adjusts volume in both simultaneously. The only way you can change the volume differentially is using the fader control in the MyPhonak app.

The question was directed to the OP based on her left/right Bluetooth issue. Just curious if the volume controls were different than the usual set up.

Most of the Phonak Aids in the past decade the volume can be set up to be adjusted together or separately in the software.

Seems I remember a member having a similar issue with Bluetooth that ended up fixing the issue by booting the phone.

My Audi called and tried to talk me through things I’ve already tried. The volume controls on the 2 HAs are not in synch. She didn’t seem to be aware of anything that might have been changed during the software update. She was going to give me a Phonak number to call, but I insisted on a visit with her tomorrow. When I try to pair them using the newest myPhonak app, it only finds one hearing aid. I tried again with the older Phonak app, but the same thing happened; so don’t think it’s the myPhonak app. I deleted the app entirely and just tried pairing using Bluetooth “Settings” on my iPhone. But I have same problem. It finds and connects to R-Phonak hearing aid but the volume controls are not in sync and I only hear in one ear when listening to podcast or radio. This should be a no-brainer!! So frustrated! Hope she can help me tomorrow. Will post when I get a resolution.

With the Marvels my audiologist had to set up for the accoustic phone program which ear I use to listen to a landline phone. When I pair my Marvels with my iPhone it only lists that one hearing aid. After I downloaded the remote control app, it then listed both hearing aids individually underneath, but only seems to connect those while I am using the app. Do you hear other things that you stream in both ears and just have the issue with podcasts? I notice that when I listen to guidance from google maps with music in the background it often seems as though it is only coming through one ear, but other things I’ve streamed play into both ears, though I’ve not yet tried listening to a podcast.

WHAT! She’s ducking her responsibility. SHE should be calling Phonak, not you. Providers have special numbers to call and authorization numbers that they relate to Phonak to get information. Even so, hold times can be long. I know all this because my provider called Phonak for me with a problem and got a concise and useful answer. When my almost-new L HA proved defective, my provider sent the pair back to Phonak and got me a brand new replacement rather than my having to wait for a repair. So, you might want to expect similar service from your provider.

Which app are you using? When I got my trial M90-Rs the app would only pair to one HA. It turned out that the Audiologist had installed the wrong app. “My Phonak” worked fine but “Phonak Remote” did not.

It turns out that when I went back to my audiologist she tried everything I had tried with no success. Finally in a last resort measure she logged into the phonak software program for my hearing aids and logged out. That seemed to reset everything and things started working correctly. She just chalked it up to a “glitch”. Guess it’s like unplugging and plugging your computer. Very weird. Anyway I am hearing podcasts and phone calls in both ears now. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions and help.

In order to pair the Marvels they must be put in “pairing mode”. When the Marvels are first turned on they remain in “pairing mode” for two minutes only. This is the only time they can be “paired”. To be paired, the must be turned OFF and then back ON again. It’s not a “glitch” at all, but is by design.

Technically, the OP had done that several times, assuming they followed the Phonak instructions, and/or my instructions I gave near the top of the thread.

The restart from Target (or whatever) may have reset more than just the “power” cycling of the HA. Obviously, the neither button-off nor the charger-off of the Marvel-R’s really turn it off; it’s always on, though in a deep sleep mode, checking for button presses or charger disconnect. The restart from Target may have initialized any static variables in the HA software, akin to a “cold boot” of a computer as opposed to a suspend/resume cycle.
