Typing on keyboard and background noises

Hello, just a few weeks into my first hearing aids for moderate high frequency hearing loss at age 37. Still in trial. And want to make sure I’m getting the best hearing aids for my life style.

I have the Starkey Genesis AI Ric.

Some thing I am struggling with is that the hearing aids seem to quickly amplify background noise when they hear another sound. An example is that when I type on my keyboard, the sound of the water cooler in my office goes way up and down on every key stroke.

I understand that it may take time to get used to background noises I didn’t used to hear as much but the sudden up-and-down is brutal.

Is this a normal part of hearing aids or should I try a different model?

Virtually all hearing aid manufacturers use some form of reactive compression for sudden sounds. Typically, those features are adjustable in the manufacturer’s programming software, so your audiologist or HIS should be able to change something. Different hearing aid manufacturers definitely have different inherent sound qualities, but I agree that what you’re hearing sounds annoying. In my experience I have found Oticon and Widex to be pretty gentle when it comes to messing with microphone input.

it could be that the audi had choosen an high/agressive setting for the “sudden loud noise management”, and therefore the ambient noises fade down/up with every key stroke…

Update. Audiologist was able to turn off something called consonant enhancer and it fixed this issue for me.
