Hi. I am totally blind I have no eyesight. natural analogue type sound is really important to me, because I don’t want hearing aids telling me what I should or should not be hearing. Yes, for a sighted person traffic noise might be annoying, but for me it could save my life So cue the Infinios. I’m going to be getting my 1st set of HAs at some point. I have Hydrops so low freq loss. That’s already a disadvantage since HA’s really don’t deal with that well. their speakers are so tiny it’s a joke. However, Infinios did provide me with a bit of speech clarity. When I put them in sphere mode, if I was in a safe environment sat down, I was happy to use it.
The rest of the time, I just used Music mode. I disabled autosense so there was no undue program changes going on.
This is where the problems started. When the aids are working properly, they provide a really nice balanced sound. However, depending on the sound levels around you, they keep changing. Sometimes the changes are slow, sometimes fast.
If I’m in my bathroom with the extractor fan on and I cough, the fan goes away and then springs back a second or 2 later. So I guess the attack and release of the compression is happy to let that come back. I can deal with that. It’s annoying but fine.
If however I’m in the city and a loud clang happens, the aids decide to turn down the high frequencies and keep them turned down for maybe 5 10 seconds. This is incredibly dangerous. They’ve just taken away my world and I have to stop whilst I wait for them to come back on.
My question is, does anyone know of a way to override this? do we just use a different non-music program and try to EQ it so it’s like the music program? Phonak are getting harder and harder to contact these days, you basically get a brick wall if you ask any technical questions. My poor audiologist has tried everything he can think of but he’s finding that they’re not being that helpful. If it can’t be done it can’t be done, but at least we should know that.
Ultimately I’m probably going to get some Virto Infinios when they come out as I dislike the lack of directionality provided by RICs. I want my mics in my ear using my natural ear shape to give me the proper left right back front sensations which RICs just don’t do. However, given it’s the same platform, I imagine I’m going to have exactly the same problem, made worse by the fact the Virto will block out a lot more of my natural hearing.
Anyone got any ideas?
