SP and UP hearing aids

I have always used BTE HAs with standard tubes and full shell molds. I thought I’d go for SP, which is more than I theoretically need. My loss is generally in the range of severe, not profound.

I tried a pair of Phonak Lumity SP, and wow, what a difference. The aids are not at all overpowered, but unusually smooth and clear. I’m now going to trial Phonak Lumity UP and Oticon Xceed3 UP (which is obviously more than I need) to see if I get an equally good result. Of course, I’ll keep them well below full gain.

BTW, I’ve worn aids all my life and size and “cosmetics” are unimportant. Anyone out there with a similar experience?

Be interesting to know more between SP and UP.

Im due to have a trial on Phonak Nadia Lumity UP soon.

Im a severe to profound and always wear BTE all of my life.

Im currently wearing Danalogic and Im not happy with it, hence going to private and have a trial with Phonak.

Let me know the difference between SP and UP.

Have a lovely weekend.

The SP and UP Naida models are very similar in terms of the functionality. Both have the same Autosense O.S, Roger Compatibility, bluetooth sword chip and form factor (BTE with moulds).

However there are differences in the battery size/power:

  • The Naida SP uses a size 13 battery, which from memory lasts about a week. The Naida UP uses a size 675 battery that from anecdotal reports on here lasts about 3 weeks.

  • The Naida UP is more powerful. It has a maximum MPO of 142db and a gain of 82db compared to an MPO of 135db and gain of 75db for the SP.

  • The Naida UP has 2 receivers (speakers).

As a consequence the Naida UP is larger than the SP.

Yes, I’ll write when I receive them. So far, I’m extremely happy with the Phonak SP. I have always worn large hearing aids, even when I was young, so that’s not an issue.

I’d recommend the oticon intents with the power receivers. Better, more sophisticated aid with more than enough power for your loss.

Although I wear Oticon Intents your statement that they are “better” and more “sophisticated” requires examination. On what basis are you saying this? If you mean the DNN, you might have a point. But then, one could just recommend the Phonak Infinio instead.

The Intents are not super power aids. They would not cope with a profound loss. The receivers would probably blow. That said, for StevenS they might work with some frequency lowering. And they do have great high frequency response.

I believe the advantage for profound wearers with Phonak is the Roger devices and direct compatibility.

Other than great battery life I don’t think going to a UP would offer any advantages. It might add more distortion.

SPs can be programmed with thin tubes and slimtips/c.shells. UPs can’t, or at least it isn’t an option in Target.

Thanks for the comments. Extra battery life is a good feature, but not the main thing. I was so pleasantly surprised at how well the SP aids are working that I want to try the UP. Perhaps my hearing loss is worse than shows on my audiogram. I haven’t had an new audiogram in a few years.

Hi Peter,

I have always used standard tubes and full shell molds, so thin tubes and domes are not an issue for me. Just looking at your audiogram, my low frequency hearing is a drop better, but my high frequency is a lot worse.

Hi Sara,

I’m no audiologist, but it looks as if you have minimal useful hearing in your left ear. I’m not sure a more powerful HA will do it. You may be an ideal candidate for CI, at least in your left ear.

I still have enough residual hearing to boost, but when I lose that I’ll go for CIs.

I haven’t looked at the UP fitting range but my hunch is it will not work for your hearing loss. Your lower frequencies are too good for the UP.
I will take a look and verify
@PeterH has made some very helpful comments. Slim tubes on the SP is nice for your loss. I did this for a couple years.
I just looked at the UP fitting range. Your loss just barely fits within the UP aids.

You may well be right, but I believe I’ve lost some low frequency since my last audiogram. Your low frequencies look pretty good. How do you like your CIs? Did they do nerve sparing because of your relatively good lows? What is the day-to-day hearing experience like compared to HAs?

More sophisticated than the exceeds in every way. More than sufficient power for his needs. The phonaks would be okay. But having just been forced to go Phonak from oticon by my increasing loss, I would recommend oticon for sound quality, more intelligent and better switching between “programs”. So, just my personal opinion having worn hearing aids for 35 years.

Rotating between Naida UP+Roger & Xceed 1 every 3 months. Yes, the Xceed has a better sound quality and better switching in the MFI program & Companion Apps. Good connection to iPhone.
Naida has a better frequency lowering program and able to hear the alarm sound of the car (ADAS). Connectivity to BT is ok. Easy to clean from hook to molds.
675 battery lasts for 3 weeks is also one of the benefits.
I think my setting is set too high and there is distortion and interference in the clarity. Have to fine-tuned again in the next visit to Audi.

So, just my personal opinion.

Steve,

You are right about my left ear. In fact, I dont wear HA on the left. Im still looking for Cros HA. Found out that there is no cros in Nadia Lumity as they are not compatible. Im struggling to find Cros HA. May be someone can suggest one for me.

As for CI I have applied several times but its a rejection after rejection. There is a lot of grey areas in my case.

Dear Sara,

I don’t believe you have any useful hearing in your left ear. The last 3 readings in the ultra high frequencies are a fluke, You may have a tiny bit of (useless) low frequency hearing on the left, but I doubt that you have any hearing at all over 4K. The insurance company is probably seizing on this meaningless artifact to turn you down. My advice: have the audiogram redone properly. You are clearly deaf in your left ear. . Hearing aids won’t help without any residual hearing. There are no HRs

You may derive a little benefit on the right with an UP hearing aid, especially if you acquire some meaningful left hearing with a CI. In the end, you’ll probably need 2 CIs. You need an audiologist or an ENT to help you fight for it. on are no, but I do not qualify. Power aids still work for me, but they won’t for you.

Yes, Phonak Naída hearing aids do offer CROS (Contralateral Routing of Signal) solutions for individuals with single-sided deafness (SSD) or significant hearing loss in one ear.

Phonak Naída CROS Solutions:

  1. Naída B CROS System

    • Designed for users with unaidable hearing in one ear but normal or mild-to-profound hearing loss in the other.
    • The CROS transmitter is worn on the poorer ear, picking up sound and wirelessly streaming it to the Naída B hearing aid on the better ear.
    • Uses Bluetooth®-based technology for seamless transmission.
  2. Naída Marvel CROS (if applicable)

    • Some Naída Marvel models may support CROS/BiCROS functionality, but you should confirm with an audiologist since the Marvel platform is more commonly associated with Phonak Audéo and Paradise series.

Key Features of Phonak CROS with Naída:

  • AutoSense OS – Automatically adjusts to different listening environments.
  • Roger compatibility – Works with Phonak Roger microphones for better speech understanding in noise.
  • Rechargeable options – Available with Naída B-Li (lithium-ion rechargeable models).

How to Get It?

  • A hearing care professional must program the CROS system to match your hearing needs.
  • The Naída CROS is typically paired with a Naída B hearing aid on the better-hearing ear.

Unfortunately, It’s a no from ENT or Audiologist. My work is done here despite how many times Ive referred. NHS have a NICE to follow for the CI’s entry requirements.

I can hear well with my right ear with HA, no problem.

In UK, we dont have a health insurance.

Wales NHS only stock Danalogic HA. If I want a Phonak or Oticon I have to go Private.

Well, you have saved my confidence.

I shall ask my private hearing aid if they Phonak B90 UP with cross availability in their stock as they are now superded and the next model was Paraside, I believe.
