Soundgate question

My HA’s are Bernafon Chronos & I have the Soundgate and TV adapter, when I turned on the Soundgate last night, instead of volume from the tv, I got music from (I thought) my iPhone. Since my phone is almost always in the same room when the tv is on I couldn’t figure out why this happened. I moved the phone into the other room, I still had Frankie Lane singing Jezebel in my ears. I finally turned off the phone and watched my show. When I went to bed I picked up my iPad and the page opened to Jezebel. So now I not only don’t know how the music got directed to my hearing aids I also don’t know which electrical device did it. Tonight I turned on the Soundgate everything worked fine, both the phone and iPad were right next to me on the end table. My son is always helping me with the computer, he says electrical devices don’t like me, LOL.

From what I’ve been told about my Oticon Streamer, which is the same thing as the Soundgate, the phone has priority over any other function, so if your IPhone was playing music it had priority over the TV and once you turned off the phone you were able to hear the TV.

The bluetooth signal from your I-pad was outputting to your Soundgate as the default sound source. You probably pressed one of the buttons on the soundgate by accident which caused the I-pad to start playing remotely.

You can either turn-off the I-pad pairing to your sound-gate or just temporarily disable Bluetooth on it when you are using the Soundgate with your Iphone.

It happened to me, pressing the wrong button:D.

What button? It happened briefly again tonight, I had it on it was working perfectly with the tv; to avoid the static getting too far away causes, I took it off and laid it on the counter while I walked to the front door. When I put it back on it was playing music again!
I checked and it was my iPad which I hadn’t touched; the iPad was off. I hit store on the iPad (my Wifi wasn’t on so I knew it would just change the page), that worked the tv show came back on. Very weird, maybe we have an electrical ghost!
Thank all of you for being so willing to help, this is such a new experience & quite overwhelming at times.

The only button it could be is the one with the musical note on it. The Soundgate works just like the Streamer it will prioritize what you will hear from 1. wired audio(using jumper wire that came with the Soundgate), 2 TV sound, 3. bluetooth stereo. However, it will automatically go to the phone setting if you receive a call and maybe your IPhone and iPad have preference over the TV until you turn them off. Just a guess. You could call Bernafon and ask them.

This is what’s happening the iPad and iPhone are regarded as telephones and prioritised over the other signal.

I too, just yesterday, got my Chronos 9 and SoundGate. And this is not my first HA but my first Bernafon and my first behind the ear.

I am hearing a lot of high frequency sounds I did not hear before. I would love to hear about any quirks or strange things that happen as I presume I might have them happening as well.

I have the HA, the SG an iPhone, and iPad but I do not have the TV streamer - how does it work?

I am 66 and have had HA for 25 years.

I also have ear molds and they seem really fitting (almost tight but not quite). I often feel a bit like my ears are stopped up - like on a plane that is landing.

No actual questions in this post but I want to keep the dialog up. (if there is a place I should post this someone please tell me.

The TV adapter is plugged into the audio out on the TV and transmits the audio from the adapter to the Soundgate and into your HA. It works pretty well although with some TV’s there can be a lag time in the audio with the audio being slightly out of sync with what is being said on the screen. You can alsp bypass the need for the adapter if you get a audio cable with an RCA jack on one end and a 2.5mm audio jack on the other. You plug in the RCA jack into the audio out on the TV and plug the 2.5 mm jack into the bottom of the Soundgate, press the button with the musical note on it and you will hear the audio with no lag in the audio but you will be tethered to your TV.

Thank you all for your answers, I make sure the iPad is in the other room and haven’t had any more problems. Somehow the Soundgate was turning on the music page on the iPad occasionally. I would have sent my thanks to all sooner, but my husband had emergency surgery last week and we are just now getting back to normal.

Thank you again, it really helps to have a place to go to ask questions!

With the iPad beside you and while watching TV, adjust it to the way you like for hearing the TV. Now, slide the lock switch on the SoundGate. That will stop you accidentally touching the music button. Let me know if that works.

I like the Soundgate, except for one thing.

Isn’t there a stereo version of this thing available??

I dislike the fact that it sends mono sound to my two hearing aids.

I can understand mono being needed if only one HA, but I have two, and I like to enjoy music in stereo.

Since these are behind-the-ear models, headphones don’t work very well.

To summarize, I’d like to get the left channel in my left HA, and the right channel in my right HA (from my iPod or stereo).

My ear was itching last night while using the Soundgate and Tv adapter, I didn’t want to take out the tube in my ear (didn’t want to miss the music); so I put my finger in my ear to try to rub out the itch. The sound got much better, so I did the same with my other ear. My husband said he was happy for me that the sound was great, but that I looked really silly sitting there with my fingers in my ears. I think I will mention this to my Audi.

I stick my fingers in my ears briefly if there is something difficult or soft I need to hear quickly, instead of reaching for the remote. It keeps the sound from escaping and things sound louder and clearer. Normal for an open fit.

I am 4 days into my “test drive” of the Bernafon Chronos, Soundgate, and TV Adapter. The Audi warned me that the new noises would seems loud, he was right. I had plugged RCA cables into the back of both radios in our motor home. The TV adapter and Soundgate work, but I haven’t driven it to see how well I hear the radio.

The radio in our house works with the adapter and Soundgate. Range was “underwhelming”, until I discovered if my body was between the Soundgate and the tv adapter the range was 8 - 15 feet. I could put the Soundgate over my shoulder and walk away 30 - 35 feet before I got noises.

Sunday morning I got the radio out of our VW Jetta TDI and spliced RCA connectors in the rear speaker wires. The TV adapter picked that time to die. I should have a replacement by Friday. But had to give Costco a credit card number and will get credit for the return.

Try as I would, I could never get the Soundgate to play Podcasts or streaming from either my iPhone or iPad via Bluetooth. So, I have the reverse of the problem of the first post in this thread. I could play podcasts when connecting the patch cord between the iPhone and Soundgate or tv adapter (until it died).

The Bluetooth works fine for making phone calls on the iPhone. I even answered a call from the audi while walking in high wind - the pesky wind noise went away when I answered, likely because the HA mics shut off while the phone was active. I mowed lawn wearing earmuffs and, after shutting down pressed the phone button on the Soundgate. I had the iPhone in my hand. It showed Voice Command. I spoke my wife’s name. The HAs said “two found”. I said her last name first and soon she answered. She could hear me even though I still had the earmuffs on. I never touched the iPhone screen.

The jury is still out.

We were in high winds last week, up to 60 mile gusts; I was expecting the wind noise to be a bother, there was none! The wind was so bad it pulled the motorhome door right out of my hand, still no wind noise!

Ron,
If you are looking for un interrupted streaming with the Soundgate I wouldn’t use the Bluetooth (especially if it’s an Apple product) because it’s to easy to lose the connection and even Oticon’s website shows the user using the patch cord for the Streamer(same as the Soundgate) to connect to IPhone’s, IPads and IPods. The Bluetooth function works great for cell phone use but it’s hard to get reliable use for other products, I use the patch cord when using the computer (Mac Mini) because the Bluetooth kept cutting in and out and would drive me crazy. I also gave up on the Tv adapter( it had a slight delay in the audio and was out of sinc with the video) and use a long patch cord to connect to the TV and it works great! Another thing to remember is if you are watching TV plug the Soundgate into the charger or get a separate power supply that you can plug into it so it doesn’t go dead half way though what you are watching.

I am now nearly 3 weeks into the Bernafon / Soundgate trial. The jury is still out.

I still have big problems with wind noise, even after the Audi decreased the left HA because it was distorting so much.

I just got a $39.88 Miccus BluBridge mini-jack bluetooth transmitter from Amazon. Finally got it paired with the Soundgate. It works, but has a delay, now I hear everything twice. Even with the mic off mode, my right ear hears some from the speakers and again thru the HA.

We drove several hundred miles in the motor home with the line from the radio to the Soundgate. Every time I turned my head a few degrees, the right HA got louder or the left HA cut out. I dropped in to the Durham NC Costco and asked. That rep hadn’t done too much with Bernafon and made a call. Bernafon suspects the lanyard / antenna and will send out a replacement to Long Island (where we go next week). I had also noticed that phone calls did funny things when I moved my head.

Ron (will eventually put up ear data)

Ron,
I think you will find out that even with a new lanyard when you move your head one or the other HA will cut out, at least that has been my experience with an old lanyard or a new one. I have found that if you bring the Streamer or Soundgate up closer to your chin and make the lanyard shorter by tying it with tape or twist ties the cut outs don’t happen as often. What Oticon/Bernafon need to do is come up with a way to easily shorten the loop.
