Solved: Phonak receiver cracked at plug

Both my receivers have a crack between the plug and the tube around the wire. They still work, but probably not for long.

(If you zoom in, you can see the crack as a ring around the plastic behind the plug.)
I tried adding a drop of hot glue and it did stuck to the plug. However, it didn’t stick to the wire. Probably they are made from different plastics.

Before I start experimenting with all the glue available to me ( epoxy resin, cyanoacrylate, some polyurethanes, something that will only harden under UV ), I wondered whether anyone else tried to repair them and how they did it.

So any thoughts on this topic?

My first thought is 100% silicone sealant.

3M 5200 but it takes a while to cure.

Time isn’t the issue, I switched from 2P to 2M receivers and they also work. It’s a different soundscape, but maybe I even understand my daughter a bit better.

However, I only see 300ml tubes. Seems a bit of waste to buy that for 2 drops. Would you know of an alternative, that can be bought in a small tube?

I do have some bathroom silicone. Maybe that will stick to the wire…?

I would shy from silicone as it will not stick well to that tubing. I would recommend any good name brand 30 minute epoxy. Go to Home Depot and get the smallest size. Mix a small amount thoroughly and apply it carefully with the tip of a toothpick. Then let it sit for at least an hour or two to make sure its going to be strong
I recommend the 30 minute type as it will give you plenty of time to mix it and apply it. Also faster epoxies just don’t seem to hold as well in the long run in my experience

Epoxy did the trick. However, the punchline is that I found that I heard somewhat better with the Mx receivers and that they wouldn’t play well with the piano and ordered new Px receivers.

I am very relieved with the new Power receivers: I hearing so much better. First time in close to a year that the AudiogramDirect values are all below the audiogram values. Sounds in de surrounding are identified before they become noise…such a relief.

So the real solution is to acknowledge that when your plastic is cracked at the plug, the receivers are well past their due date. Would have had a much nicer February month (8 birthdays to celebrate!) if I would jumped to this conclusion a bit earlier.

Glad you’re hearing better, that’s a bonus that the P level is better for you.

Could also be that the M-level receivers were worn out, too. I had the whole set 3rd-hand and I think that the difference between M- and P-level should not be this big with an avg. 60dB loss.

That’s understandable. Hopefully your P receivers last a long time as well and maybe if you need to get new receivers in the future, the M receivers will be okay.
