Simple voice to text very deaf person with dementia use family and friends ipad mini

My wife is very isolated because she cannot understand what the chat is about in any more than one to one . I have difficulty communicating with her . Using iPad mini to display spoken word, any experience with simple voice to text (and no more) so she can read the chat and respond … she is just cut off and it is not going well. Response to all inquiries so far point me to systems with lots of bells and whistles that are of no use. Dare I say it. KISS, KISS please if any one cracked this. Mac

Have you tried NALscribe? It is free and was created by an Australian government research institute. It will run on iPads.

Google’s free Live Transcribe program will work provided you have 5G or Wifi service on a smart phone. When it works it is incredible when it doesn’t it is really frustrating. Works on Android or Iphone. Has an English English accent and vocabulary conversation capability as well as North American English. Not sure about Oz of Kiwi vocabulary versions. Developed with US Gaudallet College for the Deaf. Vocabulary is more the problem than accent.

I have emailed NAL setting out briefly our problem so hoping something will result. It would be wonderful if it were to bring heather back into joining in.

I do not know how much you know about dementia, but sometimes there is a disconnect from the brain to vision or hearing. Had my mother at the ophthalmologists for an eye exam and she claimed she could not see anything out of her right eye. My wife was alarmed. Doctor told my wife to wait before becoming alarmed. After he had done some additional testing, he went back to the right eye and she had no problem reading the eye chart.

We have noticed the same thing with her hearing. Sometimes with good hearing aids in her ears, meaning working, proper program and good batteries, she cannot hear well. After a few minutes she seems to adapt and begins to become more conversant.

In my opinion, just like healthy people, those with any form of dementia, can vary in their level of comprehension from day to day and minute to minute.

Sometimes not hearing is deliberate meaning they do not want to discuss what you are talking about. Their ability to cope with conflict is situational.

Good luck. Oh, and be patient.

I got sidetracked. On the iPad keyboard there a tiny microphone icon. Go to your favorite word processor. Set a nice bold font about 16 or 18 point. Put the cursor in the document window. Press the microphone icon on the keyboard and dictate into the application. It should work fairly well assuming you are in a quiet location.

Thanks Martin gale. Although not relevant to my voice to text inquiry, it was most opportune. Recently heather has been claiming she cannot see. I have not been close to a dementia sufferer before so your experience has brought some insight into how dementia can strike. And reduced my alarm for which I am grateful. We are on our way to expedited access to our local eye specialist hospital so hope soon to get clarity on this at least. I appreciate it is only likely to get worse but I will at least know what to expect. Thanks again Martin. Mac
