My Mum, who is about to turn 96, has severe hearing problems. It is out of the question to get her fitted with a hearing aid, unfortunately. Can anyone recommend a device that she could loosely hold to her ear to amplify sounds like my voice? The general name of such a device would be good too.
Thanks in anticipation
You may want to consider a hand-held communicator, such as the Bellman Mino. I’ve found it really simple to demonstrate how it works to people of…mature ages shall we say. There are many other makes and models available, but this seems to me to be the sweet spot between price, clarity and ease of use. The company is based in Sweden, but has resellers in most European countries and the US. Mino | Bellman & Symfon
Well the first thing that comes to mind is what does your grandmother think. I mean are you doing this because you’re frustrated trying to communicate with your grandmother, which I understand. Or is this something she has shown an interest in. Remember amplification doesn’t necessarily resolve hearing loss.
That’s a really good question. It is increasingly difficult to communicate with Mum because of her hearing. So sometimes with her a fait accompli is best. She still lives on her own (with daily care) and we want her to remain independent for as long as possible.
Thank you I will look into it. I must admit using the intercom function on her home phone came to mind.
Still, if she’s not open to the idea it might not work. She needs to adjust to new sounds and added volume. Her loss doesn’t mean she losses her independence. Ultimately it will need to be her choice or it won’t work.
I used to carry the Williams Pocket Talker. It worked good when hearing aids weren’t a good option.

She can use a pocket talker, though it might be worth replacing their headphones with better ones.
(Nevermind, looks like Gorgeguy already answered)
