Salsa Dancing and Hearing AIds

I used to dance salsa before I got hearing loss- salsa socials not clubs. Since being diagnosed with hL- I have not danced because of the following:

    1. I got special ear plus made for me but when I put them on I cant hear the instructor of the class- I have to keep taking off my hearing aids and the earplugs. I want to protect my ears because the music is loud

Is there a setting that can be created on my hearing aids to protect my ears and limit the output soI can keep my hearing aids on in the salsa class?
Could I get different ear plugs thare not as strong but still protect myears?

I would love suggestions!

There is something wrong with your hearing aids. We wear hearing aids even when there is noise, it has a mechanism in it that prevents the sound from being too loud. My opinion is that the audiogram should be adjusted again, because it is possible that some frequencies are too high.

Talk to your instructor about this issue, loud music is not good for anybody.

I will assume you meant plugs. I also have custom plugs my audiologist had made for me. They are Westone TRU plugs. They have a filter in the core that can be swapped out for varying levels of sound abatement. I’d ask the audiologist.

I hope this helps.

Perhaps a remote mic, might be the answer? Maybe, something like a Roger On or Roger Select, or Roger clip on mic, your Salsa instructor would wear the remote mic, and speak directly into your aids via the direct mic, music could be reduced to an ambient level via the smartphone Remote slider, you shouldn’t need any ear defenders… Just a thought, it might work? Cheers Kev

Mo(u)lds should give you some protection anyway. The HAs themselves won’t damage (or so I was told by my first Audiologist).

I’m a HA- struggler also in Salsa dancing so I have some experience in hearing problems and salsa dancing.

I don’t think the instructor wants to wear a microphone as he/ she is walking around all the time and talking not only in and to the group but also sometimes personally to individuals in the group. But it is a nice thought. And I’m very happy @maria_s throws this topic in.

This kind of music must be played loud as the lovers are asking for it!
At the other hand everyone on the floor where I go uses ear protectors. The more advanced dancers custom made, the others one size fits all. Weird to see that people nowadays are damaging their ears just for fun but that the time we are living in unfortunately! I’m crying as being a former doctor.
And under these circumstances of loud music the teachers talk and also, though impolite, the dancers who don’t listen are talking in the same time. This is hitting the incompetence of the HA’s on the market. That’s why I now bought the Phonak Spheres to see if they will do a better job.

Mostly I wear my custom made protectors and use the small filter- canal for the regular tubes I use on many of my HA’s. Unfortunately therefor not always picking up what is being said. But it is known in the groups that I can’t always hear what’s being told and I can live with it.

I don’t know of the OP’s hearing abilities as these would be of interest on searching for the best solution in such a case.
