Received Resound Nexia RIC hearing aids two days ago and they are amazing, mostly. The main function, hearing my wife is a big win for both of us. Much better than my 10 year old Starkey HAs. My wife cried happy tears the first night. I was surprised the time from being overwhelmed by the new HAs was so short, less than 24 hours.
However, the audio quality when streaming is NO match for Starkey HAs when using a Surflink Mobile II with a program dedicated to streaming through the Surflink Mobile. The streaming audio of the Nexias is tinny and strangely uncomfortable.
I found a Resound streamer II on eBay, but have not tried it yet, have only streamed directly from my phone. I’ve played around with the different programs and the equalizer in the Resound 3D to no avail.
Am I doing something wrong? Anyone else have this experience with Nexia, or the Omnia?
Your HCP can increase the amount of streaming bass via the fitting software. Also, if you are wearing an open fit, you can lose as much as 30 to 40 dB of bass from your receivers leaking out of your ears. Phonak has recognized this problem and has designed the rather expensive Activent receivers. The vent on these opens up more when listening to external sounds, closes down a bit when listening to streamed sounds. ActiveVent — the world’s first intelligent hearing aid receiver (phonakpro.com)
I have Omnia 962s. I deliberately wear a very occlusive fit for other reasons (improved noise suppresion and improved beam-forming, since sound leaks in less from the environment to my good low-frequency hearing). But I increased the streaming bass to medium and with my closed fit, I find sound perception fine by my non-audiophile standards. If I’m around something with thumping external bass like our family room amplifier or my truck, that still makes it through my closed fit well enough to impress!
Well you won’t get any sound quality benefit from the Nexia’s BT Low Energy Audio unless you stream to them from a BT Low Energy Audio source. The Resound TV Streamer 2 is the wrong one to buy. You must have the Resound TV Streamer + as this is LE Audio and specifically intended for the Nexias.
Similarly if you want to stream from your phone, then you need one that is LE Audio. There are two or three Android phones (this is discussed in another thread) but there isn’t an iPhone that does LE Audio yet.
Anyway be patient and hopefully all will come good. In the meantime following @jim_lewis advice is a good plan as this will be a benefit whether you are making use of LE Audio or not.
I got a question about this Nexia+Android connectivity.
Lets say I will pair Nexia to S24 Ultra (that has Bluetooth LE+Auracast support), the used protocol will be still ASHA?
I guess not
There isn’t an iPhone that supports LE Audio currently. Maybe iPhone 16 will, but Apple aren’t saying. So you are safe from Apple purchasing for the foreseeable future!
I have the ReSound Smart 3D app for my Nexia hearing aids. Are the Music Program and Acoustic Phone Program available on that app, or do I need to have the audiologist install/enable them?
I have started a 2nd trial with Resound Nexia’s. Unfortunately we had two hurricanes in Florida and it has impacted my progress in evaluating the HA’s. I am also having issues with tinny mono and yes, uncomfortable streaming sound. I hooked up my TV streamer + today and was pretty disappointed in the sound quality. I am using tulip domes (trying to) during my trial. I used open domes in the past. I was wondering about your progress since you posted back in December. Have you obtained improvement in streaming sound? Going in for my second visit on Tuesday. I have additonal questions I will post with a different thread. Thank you. I am trialing with both the Samsung S23, and the S24 and trying to note differences, which are none at this point with regard to streaming sound quality.
What has worked for me to get a very acceptable streaming in my opinion is the following:
I switched to closed domes to help stop the streaming bass from leaking out like the open domes do. I redid my REM at that point.
Have your HCP increase the Streaming Bass Boost in the accessories page of the SmartFit fitting software. Have them include a music mode. In there, increase the gain in the 125hz to 750hz range.
All of this greatly helped my streaming which I love to do… Good luck!
Can you advise how to go about increasing the gain in the 125hz to 750hz range in Smart Fit? I’ve looked/stared at the screen numbers on the Gain Adjustments page for Music, but not sure how to actually increase the gains there. A few days ago, I did update my HA gains by choosing “Use Instrument MPO” button. That was easy. Also, my screen only has the 6 and 10 handles showing. I understand the HCP has set that during initial fit. So I only have from 250 to 8K to choose from. Don’t think I can go below 250hz. Correct me if I am wrong.
Apple iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, and 16 support Bluetooth LE but as yet there are no apps which make use of it for HAs. One needs the app.
Andrew Bellavia has recently posted about testing Auracast, which is based on BT LE, stating that he used a beta version of ReSound’s iOS Auracast app on an iPhone 11. We will just have to wait for the app to be released in the Apple App Store. And for devices and venues to implement Auracast for distributing audio.
You are falling into the common old trap of confusing Bluetooth Low Energy and Bluetooth Low Energy Audio/Auracast. All recent iPhones use Bluetooth Low Energy, not just the 15 Pros and 16 Pros.
But Bluetooth Low Energy Audio and Auracast is totally different and no iPhones support that yet. The 15 Pros and 16s have the right Bluetooth version (5.3) but Apple hasn’t implemented the necessary codec and other software to support Low Energy Audio in the phones. No one knows whether Apple has things ready for a firmware update to add BT Low Energy Audio, but there has been totally zero rumours about that, so probably not. Apple has been too bound up in their Apple Intelligence nonsense to do much else I think.
There are some Android phones that do support Low Energy Audio though and you can read about them here in the Low Energy Audio threads.
