ReSound iPhone App now with Auracast support

Resound has released version 1.39 of their “Smart 3D” phone app, which includes support for Auracast.

Has anybody had any luck with this? I gave it a quick try and it finds the Auracast transmitter I have setup (AK3040ProMax), but I can’t click on it and eventually it just times out.

(My Auracast transmitter shows up as TYL.Auracast_ffbb)

You didn’t say what hearing aid model you are using. Only the Nexia and Vivia will work.

Anyhow, I’m interested in reading if someone got it work on either a iPhone or Android. Hopefully, someone will try it with a FMA120 FlooGoo.

Also make sure you are using the latest Resound software for your hearing aids.

You mean firmware no doubt .

I’ve just been made aware that SmartFit software has just been updated to 2.1 as well.

Yes, the firmware in the hearing aid.

I have Nexia / Jabra EnhancePro 20s. Firmware is up to date according to the Smart 3D app.

I will upgrade SmartFit tomorrow and try if will check if newer firmware is available via SmartFit. I don’t have my Noahlink with me today.

Last time the phone app did not report an available firmware upgrade, but SmartFit did.

Either way though, I would expect the phone app to be clever enough to alert me if I need a HA firmware upgrade for Auracast.

I have Jabra EP20 ITC HAs. I tried the Resound Smart 3D phone app and It works on my Jabras. I also have the Resound TV streamer plus. This app v1.39 found the TV streamer and it worked fine. I am going to try the auracast search function on Sunday at church that uses a Moerlabs auracast tranmsmitter. I’ll report back then

Great, looking forward to hearing back on this, you’ll be one of the first to confirm!

Yes, this has been confirmed to work with the FMA120 as an Auracast sender.

lol. The news headlines casually buried in the text of the story. If someone could mention this to some of the hearing industry influencers who seem to believe that Auracast in public buildings is way off in the distant future.

I double-checked that there is no Firmware update available for my Jabra EP20s. Version 9.68.1.0 is the latest, even when checking with SmartFit.
I also don’t see any SmartFit v2.1 update being available.

Next I tried another Auracast transmitter: Eppfun BTR5 - this one doesn’t work either.

Same as with the first one I tried: The phone app finds the Auracast stream, but there is no way to connect to it. It just times out.

The SmartFit v2.1 is available for download right now - I just checked.

They must be slowly rolling it out. There is no update for me yet.

Just keep checking, the roll out is country dependant, you could uninstall and reinstall SmartFit and use USA or UK.

I use nexia 7. I have a Pixel 8 phone with android betta 16.2. LE Audio settings have appeared in the phone menu. When this mode is enabled, the Audio sharing and Find an audio stream buttons appear. But for now, the LE Audio mode is unstable and sometimes the left hearing aid reboots on its own. The right hearing aid freezes as if it were turned off. Only a long press on the power button reboots it. I’m very glad that all the settings appeared like in IOS. You can switch the operating modes of hearing aids without installing the resound 3D application. I hope that the new Resound firmware will solve the problem. Or this will be resolved in the next Android betta update. I would really like to have direct communication with specialists from Resound and Android Developer so that we can share problems.

Yes which is a good thing, nothing worse then being “forced” to install an App just to use things like this.

Yeah but could you imagine the concept of like hundreds of people all over the world wanting to make contact with issues etc I’m pretty sure there used to be a contact “developer” page on the App, long gone and replaced with a “support” option, but couldn’t imagine much feedback from that anyways.

I did a few more tests and found out why my Auracast transmitter don’t work.

The Bluetooth LE Audio specification (which applies to Auracast) allows for a number of different ‘Quality of Service’ (QoS) options. Using an IDC777 module from the Australian company IoT747, I tried which ones work and which ones don’t:

Here is the part of the Bluetooth specification that describes available QoS options:

  • Options marked red don’t work - the Smart 3D app doesn’t even show the Auracast stream
  • Options marked green work - yeah! They show up in the Smart3D app and connect right away.
  • Unmarked options I was unable to test because the IDC777 module I was using for testing does not support them.
  • The one line marked yellow is interesting: this one shows up in Smart3D, but times out. Just like the other two Auracast devices I have.

I think it’s a reasonable guess that my other two Auracast transmitter also use the ‘48_2_1’ mode. In fact, that’s probably the default for off-the-shelf Auracast transmitter right now, since it gives the best audio quality.

I also suspect (or hope) that this mode is supposed to be supported by ReSound HAs, but it times out due to a firmware bug. After all, options marked in red don’t even show up in Smart3D, whereas this one does.

So let’s wait for a firmware update and hope for the best.

The Resound customer service person I once recently spoke with was very helpful and seemed up to date on tech such as we are discussing. Give a call.
Are you saying that you found an Auracast stream and it sent sound from your phone to your hearing aids? That was unclear. I have iPhone 15 Pro Max and the “Find a broadcast” for Auracast feature was just added in the latest update to Smart 3D. But I have not Auracast transmitters found. What device is broadcasting? What is being broadcast? Did you have to pair the Nexia 7s with the BLE on the phone?

Very useful information. Thank you for your effort and for sharing. What you have found and described is for your own Auracast transmitters. I’d really like to get to the point where my iPhone (15 Pro Max) and Windows 11 computers can broadcast to my Nexia 7s. I don’t understand how I’ll be able to have HA function while receiving Auracast. What settings will be needed?
Are your Auracast transmitters able to send from your computer, phone or TV/audio system?

My Pixel 6 (Android) runs version 1.39.0 of the “Smart 3D” phone app, but i do not see support for Auracast.
I know that Google brings support for Auracast to Pixel phones from Pixel 8. As there is no use to me for Auracast now I rather wait until my Pixel is worn out enough to justify an upgrade.

Are you keeping and eye of the FlooGoo thread.

I looks to me that app connects the hearing aids directly to the Auracast broadcast, so it’s not really necessary to have an assistant built in to the phone.

Also, the Nexia and the new Vivia are the two hearing aids that are shown to work with Auracast on the Resound web site
