Recently started to experience ringing in my ears

I’ve recently started to experience ringing in my ears. It’s driving me crazy! I was fit with hearing aids a while ago now, and I found this page on the website of the clinic I go to… which is quite informative. http://www.simplehearing.ca/your-hearing/tinnitus-ringing-in-your-ears/

But I want to talk to people that have the same problems as me… Does it eventually go away? Has anyone with this problem actually found a solution?

:frowning:

I’ve had it as long as I’ve had hearing loss and it is terrible. Many times I can’t concentrate. It gets harder and harder to ignore. I don’t know of any effective treatment. Hearing aids make it slightly better.

I don’t think my tinnitus will ever disappear for good.

You could try some music relaxation soundtracks. They do help lower my Tinnitus.

My Tinnitus was one reason I went for the Widex Dream 440s. The Zen programs really help me. They play nice fractal tones which are both relaxing and enjoyable and make me forget about the tinnitus.

I’ve had tinnitus since I was a teen, forty years ago. I can’t say that my tinnitus is lessened when I’m wearing my HAs; my tinnitus varies in volume even when I’m not wearing the aids. Since it’s always there and has been for so many years, it doesn’t bother me. I decided against getting HAs with tinnitus masking because I’m not going to wear them 24 hours a day, and I was concerned that masking the tinnitus during the day via the aids might make me hyper-aware of the tinnitus when I’m not wearing them, like before falling asleep at night.

I have had tinnitus for a lot of years too. Loud music and concerts as a teen then armored vehicles in the military. My HA’s have the tinnitus masking feature though currently I don’t use it. Just wearing the aids reduces the tinnitus volume. During the day, I listen to music or something else while I work which masks the tinnitus for the most part. When I take off the HA’s for bed the tinnitus doesn’t come roaring back and keep me awake. Its just fine. When I wake up, that is another story.

Tinnitus is said to be created by our brain attempting to compensate for damage to the auditory nerve (or something along those lines). Medically, there just isn’t anything that can make it go away outside of divine intervention.

I’ve had this for 3 yrs, in some cases it is softer, than louder and sometimes one ear is louder then the other. And yes i wish it would go away.

I’ve had tinnitus for several years now. I’ve actually gotten used to it. I also wish it would go away. I really wish there was more that can be done to get rid of it.

I have had tinnitus for about 30 years. It has gotten worse over time but I have learned to not pay attention to it. I do not have aids that mask it but I do use a sound machine in the bedroom so I can sleep at night. Most of the time I do not notice it while wearing my aids. The times I notice it worse is in quiet places so I try to always have some noise around me.

I have it at night the worst. Sometimes when I’m just sitting on the couch watching TV at a low volume too. Sometimes one ear is louder than the other. As a side note, I have noticed if I get flustered or angry, it starts happening… Anyone else experience this?

Thanks for sharing the link of that site, I read that link and get lots of knowledge regarding tinnitus. I was also suffering from tinnitus but now I was relax little bit from this problem.

I just have a quick question. Since you have hearing loss. How loud do you play your sound machine & how far is it from your bed?

I know some folks sleep with their hearing aids. I know an audiologist who has been sleeping with his hearing aids in for almost 30 years.

I do not sleep with my aids normally, but do sometimes nap with them on during the day. The sound machine is set to about 40db by my noise app on my Apple Watch.

The above link is good, key takeaways are that it is a term which encompasses a variety of similar symptoms from an array of possible causes. It runs in my family yet we have different types of sound and not a lot in common in terms of likely cause other than ancestry. In other words, a diagnosis is typically a guess. For my sister a high salt intake definitely causes it to flare up and adding caffeine definitely aggravates that. If she really exceeds her limits she ends up in severe debilitating vertigo. I’ve recently begun experiencing some similar issues. Mom is prone to vertigo but never any significant tinnitus type ringing. We spent years with multiple specialists for her and a simple diuretic to reduce fluid on the ear seemed the one thing that helped somewhat. (And yet a diuretic is also a possible cause, perhaps upsetting the inner ear in the opposite direction) That may point to a salt sensitivity but we hadn’t been able to prove the correlation for her. A couple brothers have tinnitus pretty bad but neither has a history with likely sound-based causes or an observed sensitivity to salt or caffeine. If it’s related to Meniere’s then you’ve got still more questions as it doesn’t seem well understood either. In summary, if you plan to see a doctor keep your expectations in check, and be prepared to see more than one.

I’ve had it most of my life. Noticed it in my early 20’s and at first couldnt see how I would ever live with it. I’m now going to be 60 next year and it’s still there,.I just have learned to ignor it. My aids dont have masking and the only time it is an issue anymore is at night when trying to sleep. I found that falling asleep with the tv on is good enough to override the high pitched sound. Mine gets really loud when I have a cold or have a stuffy nose. In fact when I get any head cold, my hearing is reduced by 50% until my cold goes away.

If you experience ringing in your ears, you might try answering the phone.

Many people with Tinnitus issues got their T noise lower by changing their diet. Cut back greatly on processed meats and sugared drinks. Processed meats contain lots of sodium. Also cut back on sweets, candies, sweeteners for coffee and foods, no more than 3 cups of coffee per day. Watch out for sandwich subs if you eat any from places like Subway, Supermarkets, etc.
Subs contain too much sodium. For example, a foot long Italian sub made at Subway contain 2000 mg of sodium. Music relaxation soundtracks of calming noise like ocean waves, raining, etc do help mask your T noise.
