I have previously had open fit BTE hearing aids. Audiologist has suggested trying vented domes with paradise p90. Does anyone know the threshold where open fit becomes unsuitable?
Even if you were in the range for open domes, highly likely you’ll get better sound with vented domes.
We don’t know your hearing loss.
Thanks for responding.
I’ve worked out how to add my audiogram.
With your low frequency being around 40 dB, you are pushing the limits of open domes anyway.
Found this about domes - Suggestion of guideline for one’s hearing loss at 500 hz: 0-25db–open dome, 25-40db–semi open dome, 40-65 db–closed dome, >65 db–double dome.
Thank you.
Are phonak vented domes considered closed or semi-closed? I am only aware of open, vented and power for phonak. I’ve felt with the NHS open fit BTE’s that they don’t help at all in background noise - there’s just lots of noise none of which I can understand. Should a more closed dome help with understanding speech in noisier places?
Sorry, very new to this. I’ve has the loss a long time, but just managed through lipreading. Had aids for a couple of years, but new to private and I’ve had very little contact with audiologists.
Yes as naturally less background noise will enter your ear canals.
Th Vented Domes altho you can’t see in picture, have two small holes.
The picture is from Phonak new domes.
The Vented Domes on the older Phonak domes were called Closed Domes.
Excellent. Thanks for asking…

Audeo Paradise P90R’s
Thank you zebras, it’s really helpful to know.
Just waiting to try them now. Quite excited compared to my current ones. Nearly the same aids then, mine will be Audeo paradise p90 p-13T; I felt I needed battery powered aids for reliability given my job. Have you had any problems with them? Anything its worth asking the Audiologist? All being set up remotely, so not had much input at this point in time. Particularly hoping that noisy places and phones will be easier.
What were your NHS ones?
I agree. I’ll never go with rechargeable as I listen to too many Pod Casts for them to last all day.
I’ve got the Phonak Sky M70 SP so one technology older then yours. I’m not too sure what you could ask the audiologist.
Are you thinking of self programming? Not all features and adjustments can be done remotely.
I find phone so much better Altho I also have full closed ear moulds.
The problem with more opened domes and better hearing loss, background noise comes in naturally and over powers the high frequencies that are being amplified.
Keep us updated.
(I’ve just downloaded a talking clock which alerts me every 30 minute to the time in my hearing aids. Love it as means I can keep up with time. I can’t wear watches due to being allergic to what seems like all watch straps.)
NHS ones are Phonak Nathos Auto Micro with open domes. Never been adjusted; can’t get an appointment…
Yes, going to need Bluetooth to phones and equipment all day at times and no breaks or pauses in the day to top up the charge. If I can’t do my job without them, a battery which needs charging daily feels like too much of a risk.
Definitely up for self-programming. Going to see how the initial programme and remote fine-tunings go. If there’s anything that needs modifying in person I think I’ll do it myself. As far as I know, I just need to download Target and buy a noahlink wireless? Does target run OK on a laptop? I’ve also had quotes for around £100 for reprogramming in person, so if I get stuck that’s always an option. The company I have bought from are also in the UK, and do in person fittings, they are just a long way to travel, but again it’s a possibility. So I have plenty of options if I need them or fail at self-programming!
I’ve read a lot, and worn aids for a few years, but I haven’t really had anyone talk through adjustments. I don’t think I have as much understanding of what can be done with the programming as I might need. Its all a lot to learn. I quite like lipreading instead at times!
I’m hoping I find the phone improvement to be as good as for you then! I can’t use a phone at all unless I’m in a silent room at the moment. I’ve always had my loss and more and some points, but not corrected until an adult, and unfortunately I think I have some difficulty in understanding the sound even when amplified. I can’t filter background noise for example. Not sure my brain is keeping up very well. Hoping new aids will help with more sophisticated programming. They are being programmed to the audiogram you can see. My hearing at the moment in my right ear is significantly worse. In a couple of frequencies it’s double. Just got to hope it comes back - been about 5 weeks, and it is much better than it was at first, so fingers crossed and give it time. Initially I got up one morning and couldn’t hear speech as a sound even stood right next to the person…let alone understand it. Think my left ear is pretty well back, but the right needs some work.
Talking clock sounds exciting!
This is the requirements for Phonak Target.
If you want to program the Nathos Auto Micro, Target will do it and an iCube II which are super cheap on eBay. Might be good to have backup Aids?
If you want to change domes on your NHS Aids, then eBay have them Brand New.
This is the DIY part of the forum so if you do, do DIY, any questions please ask.
Definitely keeping them as a back up. Self-programming them too is a very interesting idea. Hadn’t thought of that. Would I need noahlink for paradise? I assume the icube II wouldn’t work with them? Could I turn the telecoil on myself on the nathos?
I will do, thank you, all very useful to know!
Yes NL Wireless for all Bluetooth Aids.
iCube II us for nine Bluetooth Aids.
Yes telecoil can be activated on Nathos and your Paradise also has it.
That is ME! The double power domes are the most comfy fit and seem to enable the most natural sound, whether that be ambient, music or speech.
Open domes didn’t give me the bass tones and I had tons of trouble with closed domes. My hearing loss really didn’t justify closed domes.
My audiologist just recently gave me “open bass” domes. They’re Oticon domes, but they fit nicely on my paradise aids.
I’m lucky to have an audiologist that thinks out of the box.
Rare! Lucky indeed! (and enough characters to add up to or exceed 20)
I have the same problem finding the right dome for my right ear. Totally closed ones do not work, nor those with two tiny holes. I am having better results now with Phonak domes that have two larger holes. But it took me going around buying domes from different places to get this right. My audi was not very supportive… I wear Oticon hearing aids and ended up with domes from Starkey in my left and Phonak in my right.
Where can I order the takoovk
Thanks
What’s that???
They have arrived!
Fitted with vented domes and sound so much better - have definitely been missing lower frequencies. Everything sounds sharper and clearer compared to the old ones. Speech is far more understandable.
Never really used to get feedback with NHS and open, but if I lie on my side/turn the volume up/alter the settings to increase high frequencies I am hearing the high pitched whistling. Any ideas? I have M recievers fitted. I was under the impression that you get less feedback with a more closed dome?
