Getting to 100 percent of what? That’s my question. 100 percent of what the algorithm says is optimal? I know the algorithm is based on many, many samples, but if my brain thinks I’m not hearing comfortably–meaning that’s how I perceive the sound–yet I’m only at 80 percent based on the algorithm, who’s right?
I also found that how you hear your fitter talking to you inside the ultra quiet booth is entirely different from out in the real world and I should have asked to have the high freq turned down initially based on my past experiences. Also, there are two noise programs, noise and noise in speech. I didn’t think the 2nd one did much for noise but the first one was pretty good even out in the noisy Costco warehouse. I asked for both but now I’ll get rid of the 2nd one and have movie/theater installed in it’s place. You can only have 4 programs total.
If you can only have 4 program choices, is there someplace I can see what those choices are and how they work?
Noise and speech in noise programs–did you get that closed in, occlusion, feeling with either of those programs?
I didn’t notice much difference except the noise program is much quieter overall so maybe sounds less occlusive as well. Here are the supplied programs and each of these can be further tweaked by the fitter. This is from the HearSuite program that you can download and run in simulation mode to see some of the options.
Thanks for sending this screenshot. The demo without aids is only showing me 3 programs, not this list.
I believe we are talking about gain of each frequency.
You are. Whatever works best for you is the goal.
Some aids even self adjust gains over a given time to give the owner time to acclimate, say starting at 80% and increasing to 100% over a 90 day time period.
I’ll be interested to see about acclimating and increase over 90 days. I’ve worn hearing aids for 30 years and never lost high sensitivity to noise. Maybe I’m just not very adaptable in this regard.
I’ve not seen this algorithm target goal before. Presumably because it’s been a decade or so since I last got new hearing aids. Or maybe I just wasn’t paying as much attention to how hearing aids are supposed to work then as I am now. But I am interested in seeing what this means in practice over time.
Mine are not set to increase over time right now which is an option. The fitter just set them to start off at 80% of the REM settings and yes 100% might not be the goal because like you I seem to have a lot of sensitivity to high frequency.
You see this list when you elect to re-name one of the programs.
Thanks, I didn’t realize the increase over time could actually be programmed in to happen automatically. I’ll add that to my list for the fitting.
@fbacher1: Thanks so much for pointing out the Noise program for the 9030’s. It works exactly as you describe and is much more comfortable to listen with.
You’re welcome. I even rode my mtn bike today using that program. I did have to reduce the volume a bit but it was no where near as noisy as the BiCores were. And I just had a pretty short (on the sides) haircut. I think the BiCores sat way too far forward and on top of my ears rather than slightly in back.
That’s enough technology to feel creepy!! I’m going to have to watch the fitter closely.
I noticed that the open bass domes on my 9030’s from Costco seem to plug up with wax quickly compared to open domes. And the manual says NOT to clean them and they need to be changed every month. I’ve worn these a little over a week and some of the openings are closed with wax. I have tried wiping the domes only with alcohol but that really doesn’t get at the wax and eventually they all will be plugged way before the month is up. I’ve looked at the Oticon open domes which look to be more cleanable but the HearSuite program doesn’t list those so wondering if they fit and if the program will compensate enough at the open bass setting. Will ask my fitter but won’t see her until the 31st.
Soak the dooms in a cup of warm water (28-35 C) for 5 minutes. Touch the soap with your fingers and rub it onto the doom to clear the wax. Soak it for another 5 minutes. Then clean it with a tissue to dry it. Used alcohol swap to clean it again and let it air dry.
Costco will give you domes for free. Toss them and put on new domes.
So removing the domes to do this is not exactly easy and will usually damage the domes and I assume the receiver will not take this bath, lol. I’ve tried removing them and could not pull one off. The CostCo tech showed me how but the dome easily tore when she did it by just pinching the side of the dome and sort of turning it inside out while pulling it off. I like the idea of getting a handful of free ones from CostCo. I wish they had a true open dome like the BiCore because I could just easily brush the wax off. I don’t seem to make a lot of was but whatever I make is stuck in the convoluted open bass surfaces.

Removing domes is easy and here’s a Video Link. Simply apply pressure in the right place.

Is the older miniFit Open Dome in this chart what you are wishing for?
