Oticon OPN From Alta 2

I’m putting my name down as a new user/wearer of the OPN 1 hearing aid devices. I was fitted with some of the Alta 2 miniRITE aids almost three months ago so I still considering myself a new user of hearing aids. In general I liked the Alta 2 but found the Bluetooth interface with my iPhone to be frustrating and problematic. When I last visited the audiologist to express that frustration and lack of informational support from Oticon or Apple she suggested trying the OPN 1 devices since the iPhone interface was a prominent feature of them. If I got a pair I would be the first wearer in her practice and it would be a new experience for everyone. Originally I had felt the OPN platform might be to cutting-edge however I am a bit of a tech-loving guy and the idea it would work better with my iPhone made it worth trying out. The review visit is in a week. The only thing I feel I’m missing now is a contact phone number for anyone with the expertise to answer detailed questions from a new user. Sadly the generic information online only touches the very basics.

Gpsgrandpa, I am particularly interested in your upcoming review of the Opn since you will be comparing them to the most recent Oticon technology. I will be interested in your opinion on whether the Opn really represents a paradigm shift.

So far the biggest advance I see is in the two days I’ve been using them I have lost no phone call connections, the audio sounds very good (I know, a very subjective opinion) and all the folks I’ve spoken to report they are hearing me with no problem. I have nothing I want to connect to an IFTTT experiment so I may not get there for a while.

gpsgrandpa, what I would be most interested in hearing is if the Opn’s are significantly better than the Alta 2’s in a noisy environment like a loud restaurant or sporting event. By “significantly better” I mean, can you hear a speaker speaking to you (or multiple speakers in a group conversation) much better in a noisy environment with the Opn’s than you could with the Alta’s?

I’m new to the forum and new to hearing aids. I just got a pair of Opn’s to demo after two weeks of demoing Alt 2 Pros. I really don’t seem to see a LOT of difference. I did go to a noisy restaurant with my family tonight and could here my daughter across and down the table just fine. Not something i could do without aids. But, unfortunately, I wasn’t in that situation with the Alta 2’s.

I do SEEM, at least initially, to have a little more trouble knowing where the sound is coming from. Maybe that will improve over time. This weekend I’ll be viewing a Surround Sound movie. We’ll see how that goes.
