Now that I think more, I should keep the left to use while the right is gone for repair, this a common problem, button failure?
I wouldn’t say its common, but its not unheard of.
My good audi (I have a good audi & a bad “dispenser”) is overnighting it to the New Jersey Oticon repair shop. She says they will probably just swap it for a new one. She had a new real ear device (I forget the brand) and tested me & the aids with it.
It’s pretty hilarious, the machine “speaks” in a made up “language” that sounds “foreign” and graphs out the results on her computer screen.
She says I really need closed dome for best results but I get an infection (from moisture) every time I try them.
With open domes I get feedback whistle & not quite as good result for hearing.
I am sort of disappointed in the build quality of the Oticon, with the button failing after only 9 months.
That aside, they are pretty good.
Any suggestion on working around the close dome/ear infection issue?
You might want to try Eargene or Proear. They are essential oils that lubricate the ear to minimize itch. They should be mildly antiseptic. Wipe your domes with alcohol wipes to keep them clean/sanitary.
im disappointed that you are so disappointed… shit happens, probably got damp along with a slime build up. clean your ears and clean the molds daily instead of screwing around with domes.
if they are over nighting the aid what else could they have done?

I asked her (the good audi) about “drugging” my ears so I could use the closed domes & she (&I) agree that it’s better to use open domes & not introduce more drugs/antiseptics/essential oils to the problem.
It seems “my ears” just like to dry out all day long.
For Doc J. I blocked you a long time ago, so don’t bother with my posts. Your attitude is just not worth whatever useful info you “might” post from time to time, which based on your posts I read when I first joined is not that much.
I think the audi decided to agree with your opinion rather than disagree with the client. The two item aren’t ototoxic.

How about we all are willing to admit we are a whiny and confused lot. The hearing loss makes us that. We do stumble around looking for better results. That affects some more than others. So, what it is what is and if you can’t cope with it because you had to be supportive when you were with the VA then maybe you could pretend you are back at the VA and don’t have a choice.
I would ask what kind of closed domes you have tried. Different ones allow differing amounts of air in and out. I personally prefer Phonak closed domes. They have two large holes punched in them that usually allow plenty of ear in and out, but still do a better job of feedback control than Oticon open domes. I would suggest give them a try. And as others said, keep your ears cleaned and moisturized.
Phonak/Unitron Closed - Large ( OP601369) which she modified by cutting holes in the domes with small diagonal cutters. Three holes in one and four in the other. My Oticon domes that do not give me the ear infection problem (but that do allow whistle/feedback) have 6 holes in each one. So they “ventilate” at 2x to 3x as much as the modified closed domes.
Something in between those two levels of “ventilation” might work.
I will see if she has Phonak closed w/ 2 holes.
With your loss, there shouldn’t be that much feedback. Phonak has “closed” domes which have the two holes punched, and they have “power” domes that have two layers and no holes. For your loss, the “closed” domes with two holes should be more than adequate to control feedback. If you feel a bit plugged at first, I would not be totally surprised, but that feeling should go away on its own as your ears become accustomed to the change in air pressure. Its just a matter of putting up with the change for a few weeks.

Thanks for keeping up on my thread. Saw my audi today. She is so nice & a beauty to boot. Any way on the “essential oils” she said that they did not really address my issue, which is MOISTURE causing SWIMMERS EAR type problem & she & I both agreed plain old alcohol is probably the best way to control that.
As for the domes, without a part number, she pulled what she thought you were talking about & the openings were like small slits, smaller than the ones she custom cut for me previously. So they would not allow “air drying” to happen, unless you were referring to some different Phonak domes?
So, she gave me a few 100% Phonak closed comes so that I could experiment with putting some openings in them & trying them & see if it helps with feedback/whistle.
I will do some modifications & post back some results.
