OPN Startup Tune

I have new OPN1s for about a month. It takes the startup tune several seconds to sound after the aids are turned on. Is that normal? Also get rebooting occasionally. What’s up with that?

Thanks for your replies.

Steve

I don’t know about your aids. I know that in many aids, the fitting program can set up the tones for like low battery, program change, etc. The tones can be turned off depending on aid.

I think that is the norm with all HAs that use a startup series of tones. That way one can turn the aid on and place in the ear before the tones start. Nearly all my previous aids and the current ones had that feature. Hope this helps!
The rebooting sounds like a technical issue. Do both aids reboot simultaneously?

On some aids the programmer can set the start up tone to have a delay. This can vary. The delay is meant to give you time to insert the aid. It may also be possible to set no delay, a shorter delay or no tone. Check with your provider.

Thank you all for your replies. My research indicates that Oticon has had a reboot problem that was supposed to be addressed with a “recent” firmware upgrade. I believe that my aids are up to date. Only the left is doing it and not influencing the right. Regarding the startup tune, I was judging based upon my six yr old Agil Pros. I’ll check with the source of my purchase.

Thanks again.
Steve

I used to get reboots frequently on firmware 2.0 of the Oticon. This problem virtually went away in FW 4.0 (there’s no FW 3.0), but occasionally it would still reboot. Now with FW 5.0, the reboots are quite infrequent in between

Resound aids have a 5 tone sequence. I had my fitter change it to 1.

The OPN start-up tune (for those who haven’t experienced them, OPNs play not just a couple of tones but a whole tune of about 20 or so notes) is rather annoying since it goes on for a while. I’ve taken to just turning them on before I’m putting them in my ears, waiting a few seconds for them to boot up and play the tune, then putting them on. I don’t need the tones to let me know they’re on … I can tell that right away as soon as they’re in my ear because I can then hear the HVAC running, the fridge running, my dog walking across the floor, etc. Before I got the OPNs, BuyHear had me test a pair of Widex Beyond. Turned those on and, after they had a couple of seconds to boot, they’d say “right ready” and “left ready”. That was much better, in my opinion.

Re: the boot-up delay … given that these things are essentially little computers, having some delay from powering on to being ready to put sound through the system seems more than reasonable to me.

txmtn - I agree that the tune is annoying. I try to find something amusing about it, but can’t most of the time. BTW, how long did it take for your brain to accept the substantially increased volume of the OPNs?

Your audi can program the hearing aids to turn off the startup jingle so it won’t play during the boot process.

Thanks … I’ll have to inquire about that!

The OPNs are only the second set of aids I’ve ever worn (those Widex I demo’d being the only other set.) I didn’t hve the Widex long enough to really “get used to them” but I’d have to say that it was probably the better part of a month before I realized that my brain was interpreting the sound I was getting while wearing the OPNs was “normal” and the sound without being “muted”. Probably about the same amount of time it took to get used to having things in my ears, too.

On my Phonaks, the presence of, and delay of the tones is programmable. I find them to be one of the least annoying things about them.
