New Resound Nexia

Hi, I’m brand new to hearing aids. I got the Resound Nexia so I could engage with others at a party or restaurant. It’s only been a week but I think I’m doing something wrong! My issues:

Noise around the house (from small things like dishes being put away to noisier things like the garage door opening) are extremely loud and tinny. Sounds like things are breaking.

And in outside restaurant (not too crowded) I STILL couldn’t hear the person next to me. I tried all the setting but still disappointed.

Am I doing something wrong? Is the set I have defective? Any suggestions welcome!

Take copious notes before you go back to see your audiologist. The Nexia, depending on the technology level, has many adjustments that can be make to the Environmental Optimizer II and the Noise Tracker that a good audiologist should be able to use to fix those issues.

It takes a while for your brain to get used to the new sounds that you haven’t been hearing.

Have you been introduced to the Resound Smart App 3D for your smart phone? If you are not interested in using an App to control volume and noise reduction then you must speak to your Hearing Aid Specialist so she/he can make adjustments. Also you can control the Volume by using the button on the hearing aid. Pressing the right aid two quick times will increase volume and two quick presses of the left aid button will decrease volume. I find decreasing the volume helps with the loud noises and tinny sounds. As you get use to the aids you will notice that you can increase volume without the shock factor.

The app gives some control, but …

  1. What programs are on your Nexias? I have Jabra Pros, but the program controls are very similar. I have 6 programs - All-Around, Music, Hear in Noise, Outdoors. Hear in Noise is very useful at restaurants. Some audis send customers out the door with just one program at first. Which programs do you have and use?

  2. Your world became quieter in the years before you got HAs. Now most sounds are much more audible, and it’s disorienting. For me, after 14 years with aids, some noise is still louder than I’d like, but I’ll take the noise because the aids help me hear the content I want to hear. I believe that means my brain has adjusted to the sound. :slightly_smiling_face:

The Resound Smart fit 1.18 fitting software for the Nexas seems to allow only four programs. Does the software for the Jabra Pro allow more programs or was that a typo?

Sorry - I forgot to change the number. I have a TV Streamer 2 and a Multi-mic, 2 accessories that you didn’t mention. Each has a separate program, so I have 4 HA programs and 1 program for each accessory. I believe they do not have separate programs for the Nexia, but I don’t know for sure.

Very helpful. Thanks!

I will! I have written to her already but will keep track of issues before seeing her again.

Part of your issues is getting adjusted to hearing things. The other part is that the hearing professional needs to adjust the hearing aid.

One, you need to have your provider lower the total gain, and slowly bring the gain up to the correct level over a few months.

Two, your provider needs to adjust the hearing aids to remove the tinniness by adjusting certain frequencies.

Three, your provider needs to work on making the hearing in noise program fix your issue at the restaurant.

My concern is that you may have only a month to return the hearing aids if you are not satisfied. I don’t think that’s long enough. Two months should be the minimum.

Understand, that the person programming your hearing aids can make all the difference. If this hearing aid and professional making the adjustments can’t make it work, find another professional to work with.

Unless your insurance picking up the tab, I would personally go to Costco, if there is a Costco within 25 miles of you. I would return the Nexia and try the Rexton or Philips hearing aids at Costco. You get 180 days, cash back return, at Costco to get the adjustments right.

The one downside at Costco is that they are busy and may not give you the support as quickly as you would like. So Costco isn’t perfect, but at least you have 180 days.

Note that new Philips hearing aids are coming out this year, should have Auracast. The Rexton folks have stated that they plan to update their software for Auracast.

Auracast is kind of a big deal. It will allow you to listen to broadcast information using your smart phone and hearing aids, think theaters, airports, church and so on. Note, your Nexia hearing aids already have Auracast capability.

I don’t think I have all those programs, but do have Hear in Noise. I guess I’ll need to research a bit more.

Thanks!

I’m printing this out to follow up with my audiologist. Thanks!

just to reiterate what’s been said - it takes a while for the brain to adapt, anything up to 2>3 months before things settle down. don’t be disturbed, persist in wearing your aids all the time, and you’ll come to terms with real life all over again
