I think the scissor I’m using is an old hair cutting scissor that Wahl used.
I just tried a hair cutting scissor that I bought on Amazon during the lock-down and that worked too.

If you don’t mind investing in yet another pair of scissors then you could look for pretty much anything that’s compound action. This one for example is overkill for hearing aid batteries but might come in handy for other things as well. Often sold in sets of three - left, straight and right. Requires less muscle than regular shears but the handles have a longer stroke due to the nature of the design. So I wouldn’t recommend them for very small hands. https://www.homedepot.ca/product/anvil-10-inch-straight-cutting-snips/1001190524
These electrical side cutters have loads of torque. Should work easily on these child proof batteries.
Ha. Sewing scissors, box cutters, side cutters, compound action scissors. Next it’ll be tin snips or laser cutters, lol.
Is this not a ridiculous state of affairs, folks? Senior citizens need tools to access their hearing aids batteries.
Getting old is not for the weak. Next thing you know one will need a license to catch a fish. I gotta’ say though, in the grand scheme of things that new battery packaging is barely a hiccup. I’d cut a thousand of them open in exchange for 30% of people signaling their turn before they put their brakes on.
I think @Dusty actually recommended aviation tin snips up above. Tough as hell and a bit overkill, but they will get the job done. If you can keep the electrical side cutter sharp, that is probably what I’d go for. I’m unlikely to get disposable battery HAs though.

Don’t have a horse in this race anymore, went with Infinios BUT if I was needing to get something to cut the durable plastic used I would look into something along the line of these… https://www.amazon.com/Toenail-Clippers-Medical-Stainless-Pedicure/dp/B08R1LRM42/ref=sr_1_39?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.6xRpBf1BdtZm771bgoqajwVDZpsmsunPxAxe9jZrUJ1b7CD3DOh7fJHbDMWDQS1fPsLdLahasW4nmlK98bq8JiA0BMOFD3p9Yu6Olhx0NjMkSEb5SbC9KAFOFcRnxiARaNi3i_BGHBdDQ7RmV6EF4DhZWbjrUM20erMRL6zXsSDtcPug5f-BcdNflx9ee4q9fal28miwARuqCmcFBA-TzJ2SfJlw6chEeJZ5djfysRwO2LzksaSoKpzRz933xppP81tPhORI8PED9W9WXb7utXH1zo6D2flXdinZMOjm7L8.MO4-69vl1I2_rPjby1TI75Ba4m8_kcwqmFG9UxDLbdc&dib_tag=se&keywords=toenail+scissors&qid=1733229616&sr=8-39
Stop whining and just buy a pair of hair cutting scissors and in get on with your life.
I bought a box of child-resistant battery packs to see for myself (and to use later). Tried electrical cutters and tin snips. Nothing was better than a good pair of scissors. If you have good vision and good hands and are having trouble with scissors, then my guess is you need to improve your technique and/or get better scissors.
Those tools look used.
Did you buy them at a garage sale?
My wife managed to get her childproof batteries out of the package with scissors, Kirkland brand.
Walt Kowalsky from “Gran Torino” would be proud
Yeah, pretty battle scarred. I’ve had those two large scissors for >40 years. Who knows how many miles of fiberglass cloth they cut back then. Newest scissors are the Fiskars on the left. In 2022 we had about a thousand (not exaggerating) mushroom pickers in our area after a wildfire. One of them left those scissors on the ground alongside a trail because the handle spring had fallen out. I rescued them and cobbled a new spring. Contrast those tools with the nearly pristine CNC router table they’re laying on. Hope to see real wear on that as well. Maybe I can use it to automate battery package opening and start a new biz.
These scissors are well balanced and have no trouble cutting through battery packages. They’re easy to control, with 4 fingers in the large handle and thumb in the other handle. This exact model is discontinued:

This is Amazon’s suggested “newer model of this item”. It looks the same except for color:
A non-titanium orange version is also available:
Hope this helps someone.
When you hit the 84 year mark with Arthritis, Reynauds syndrome, and top those off with Essential Tremor, you may begin to understand the value of Rechargeables!!!
Now, the problem with the Rechargeables, is the new Oticon Intent charger is so small, my hands shake, and I miss the holder!!
The OPN S, and More had a nice size desktop charger which used induction charging, which was much easier.
Nobody thinks about these issues.
I use nail scissors but it’s difficult and painful be suse of the amount of pressure i have to use and how the little handles cut into my fingers. I’ll try cutting to the center. I live in Mexico though so i can probably still get the old packaging.
I haven’t dug into the weeds of it
but I suspect that the law likely just requires “child proof” or some such thing.
so someone probably just has to invent and produce a package sort of like a pill bottle or chemical bottle that takes a little nuance to open…
I reckon that at the moment, the easiest and cheapest way to comply is to make packages that we are seeing now
I believe the requirement is for the packaging to require a “tool” to open. Ah, an alternative is to require two independent and simultaneous hand movements (like the lovely medicine bottles)
