Having returned back to the UK from SE Asia, during the flight on descent, I had a sharp painful popping of my left ear drum, with a subsequent loss of hearing. This has happened to me on previous flights, with hearing returning back to my normal aided loss within a couple of hours. This time I have further substantial loss which does not feel as if I am going to recover from. Are there any forum members who have had a similar experience to me and have permanent loss from it?
You should go see an ENT to check it out. My guess is that you sustained a hemorrhage in your middle ear. I’ve encountered this in the past (with one episode when SCUBA diving, for the same reason). If that’s what it is, it should clear without treatment, although it could take a few weeks.
I had to go see an ENT after l got a sudden left ear hearing loss. The doctor gave me injected corticosteroid shot thru my left eardrum. It took a few weeks for my hearing to return. I also had a brain MRI to rule out any tumors in my brain. They found no tumors.
It’s probably not permanent, but go get it checked just in case. Depending on how your medical system works, an audiologist is probably fine to start with if an ENT is harder to see or more expensive. The audiologist will be able to determine whether you need GP or ENT follow-up or just to wait it out.
